This is a beautiful traditional Ryokan with very friendly staff and cool little outdoor private bath. Perfect for a relaxing break and a real highlight of our holiday to this part of Japan. I would highly recommend.

This was my coolest hotel experience ever. I was looking for a place to stay in Beppu. At first, I was thinking something fancy like an international luxury brand. However, I saw the website of Yamada Bessou. I was instantly interested. The website said it was a wooden traditional house built in the 1930s. It had 2 bathing areas: indoor... More

We've stayed at over a dozen of ryokans in Japan, and this was easily one of our favorites. Good location - walkable to the main strip with markets and restaurants. Good staff - a lovely woman who spoke good English and is serious about maintaining her hotel. The place is super clean, tastefully-decorated, and filled with amenities that are of... More

This family run ryokan has lasted three generations. It seems that much have not changed, hence retaining its old charm. Book this place if you want to have a experience a real ryokan experience. The owners were great people. We booked this place thru booking.com and apparently there was an error with the information given - that the baths can... More

This traditional looking ryokan is well hidden. However if you do enough research or has Google Map it should not be too difficult to walk here from Beppu Station. Staffs were welcoming. Our room was at a secluded end of the ryokan, Japanese style with tatami covered flooring and an attached bath. All amenities are provided. This ryokan has onsen... More

Stayed 2 night at this classic Ryokan and really enjoyed the experience. The place is clean and well kept with an outside private Onsen you can book in addition to the public one that is genderdivided. Worth a stay.

We loved our first ryokan experience although it is officially a hotel because there are no meals included (breakfast is optional). However, it is such a beautiful place with perfect rooms (we had a very big and beautiful family room) and a great private onsen.

The first thing that came to mind at the Yamada Bessou was Hawai'i. This is the vibe you can imagine. Our family is not into super über hotels, we like places with personality and history. and the Yamada Bessou definitely has that. The staff--or some of them at least--speaks fluent English, which was very nice. Our room was a good... More

Yamada Bessou is a large old house in a quiet location close to the centre of Beppu, a short walk from the station, shops and restaurants. With wooden floors, futon beds and traditional screens, the guesthouse feels very traditional: indeed, almost a museum. Few of the rooms have private shower or toilet, and the communal shower facilities in the indoor... More

Grand old guest house located not far from the station. We had excellent service provided, enjoyed the outdoor onsen as well. Absolutely loved this old place, and highly recommend it ti anyone passing through Beppu. The rooms were large and airy untypical of ryokans.
