A twin bed, bare walls, a computer screen as a TV (pay extra for TV card) and modular RV style toilet and shower is what 5500yen buys in Aomori. The upshot is It’s a 15 minute walk from the train station. In a country that is known for being safe and especially anti-theft; it was disconcerting to see the warning sign saying the elevator stops at the 4th floor reception for “crime prevention”. Another sign plastered inside the elevator announced a broken boiler and limited hot water. The curled sides of the paper suggested it had been there awhile. The room was cozy and served its purpose.

A dated Retro Inn, one building by itself. My impression on the 1st day upon checked in was very disappointing. However, after 4 nights there, the image improve and like it there. At least 10 to 15mins walk from Aomori JR train station. Hotel is still using the manual keys, tap water we need to adjust manually to reach a acceptable temperature we want. I cannot see any CCTV in the corridor of guest room. This really worries me. Lights were too dim, very depressing. Rooms are small with odd spaces. We are able to make use of the odd spaces to put our luggage. Bath/toilets are even smaller. And usually we can smell a sewage smell in the bath room. What impress us is that though it is an old dated inn, Hotel has facilities for washing machine at 300 yen and dryer at 100 yen per 30 minutes. Japanese breakfast included was delicious and nutritious. Staff are always humble and friendly and informative. We can go to the lobby for coffee and bread (on the house) between 3 to 10pm. Rooms are clean and as days passed we forgot about the old property as staff are all cheerful and makes us happy. If hotel did not provide free breakfast, then the rate paid may not be worth for this hotel. I would only recommend this hotel to someone who needs breakfast and has a male companion and vigilant person.

I would not recommend this place for someone with asthma. The rooms obviously used to be smoking. It was also unseasonably hot, but they'd shut off the AC. The windows in my room would not open (safety reasons), so I had to take cold showers every night before bed. The bathroom is incredibly cramped. On the plus side, the service is good and the rooms were clean. The breakfast is actually very good and I highly recommend it.

Our travel agent told us this was the most expensive hotel he had booked for us in Japan, so we were expecting something special. This seedy establishment is on one of the main streets and ¥700 worth of taxi ride from Aomori station. The front door is on a very tight spring. There is only one lift, papered with instructions to valued guests, that stops automatically at the 4th floor “to help crime prevention”. Getting to the front desk on the 4th floor, our reservation was taken by the clerk and obviously took some finding - he then told us that we had a smoking room. I told him that we don’t smoke and had reserved a non-smoking room. He argued with me in Japanese, I argued back in English. Finally his colleague intervened and offered a room on the 8th floor which was non-smoking. It may be true that no one has smoked in it recently, but neither has it been decorated recently, so there is a miasma of tobacco in the room. The room itself is tired, but the sheets and towels are clean. The capsule bathroom is tiny! I feel sorry for the housekeeping staff who have to try to coax cleanliness out of such tatty fixtures. We were not able to adjust any air conditioning so the room was very warm. One of the lights did not work. But the bed was okay. Breakfast for us was toast, bread rolls and coffee. Rice and other Japanese fare was also on offer - no complaints there, but not to our taste. But for one of the most expensive hotel rooms on our tour of Japan, we are at a loss to know why it is so tacky.

Select inn has certainly seen better days. It was a little shabby. There is a very reasonably priced breakfast but we didn’t have it preferring a set in the town area. The room however was quite large, though the bathroom incredibly cramped. Since I’d paid a similar price for a better hotel in Tokyo I was a little surprised. The staff were pleasant. The hotel is about 10mins walk from the station, there are certainly closer hotels. The centre of Aomori seemed a little quiet and run down which I wasn’t expecting. It is well located though to attractions such as lake Towada and surrounding areas, Osorezan and the Shimokita peninsula. However if you can I’d recommend staying at one of those places. It’s actually a long way on public transport. There are some very nice looking onsen in the Towada area and Shimokita looked great.

The hotel is close to downtown and 5 minutes walk to the coastline. The room is big for a family of four (we took the three bed room), bed is soft, AC is cold and lighting is good. TV channel is limited with 6-7 channels and all japanese. The hotel is walking distance to a morning market (a tall building and the market is in the basement) which sells all type of local seafood and we got our Alaskan crab there. Breakfast spread is also sufficient with changes to the meat section daily and the time for breakfast ends at 9am which is rather odd. During the night there is a comfortable western restaurant on its ground floor and a convenient shop right is within the building premise. Will stay again.

When I planned my trip to Japan for chasing cherry blossoms- sakura- I made a small mistake. I looked for stopover in Aomori instead of Shin Aomori. They are different places, it takes about 15 min to go by train. Shinkansen trains stop at Shin Aomori and normal behavior should be to find accommodation there, in Shin Aomori. But anyway, me and my wife reached Aomori in the April evening and polite policeman showed the way to hotel. It was like we expected. Not large room, but enough for two tired person. Sleep quality good, towels, toothbrush and yukatas provided. Even cakes for breakfast were given as present. Recommend for short stopover.

The room I booked was clean and pretty spacious. Bed is comfortable but in-room amenities provided was just all the very basic stuff (dislike the toothbrush which is soooo hard). While the bathroom some how have some leak while you bath or use the basin. Also, it seems like the towels or yukatas are not properly cleaned cause I noticed 1 or 2 strands of hair attaching to it still. Laundry is coin operated with 300yen per washing and 100yen per drying. The washing machine capacity is a bit small with only 4.5kg allowed, no detergents provided. Location is not the best but still can consider as good cause it's just within walking distance (about 10-15 minutes) to the town, Aomori station or to the port. Lobby is at the 4th floor and the lift will stopped at 4th floor automatically no matter you are going upwards or downwards though. Staff are very friendly and polite. In room TV services have to be bought separately. There is a combini at the ground floor and opposite the street (7-11).
