Updated 22/06/21

Located on a peninsula of the town of Antonibe, in the north-west region of Madagascar, Anjajavy is only accessible by light aircraft or by boat. Created by Dominique Prat, Anjajavy le Lodge was established in 2000 and has since developed an expertise finely suited to its environment. The lodge includes 24 villas, a nautical centre and a designed garden "L'Oasis". Known for having a high level of endemism, Anjajavy plays a dynamic role in conservation considered by experts as a success story. Anjajavy le Lodge offers high-end eco-tourism as a vector for development. The total protected area of the Reserve is 10,803 ha, including 1,030 ha of Private Reserve and 9,773 ha of Protected Area. The property is tucked in a forest reserve of 550 ha and opens to a number of deserted coves. The forest is host of a variety of lemurs and one of the most endangered bird of the world as the Malagasy fish eagle. At the same time, the Natural Conservation Centre of Anjajavy is developing new projects

Wow what an amazing team of people that run the hotel. Everyone was multitalented. The lifeguards were amazing dancers. The best staff and reception could have cut a record deal. I love that the hotel contributed to the community in the way of health and maternity care. Service was amazing the sea and pool were amazing and of course the lemurs and night safaris were very special. We are saving up for our next trip. The Hatami- Wrenn clan

We visited Anjajavy for our honeymoon, arriving in the afternoon. Knowing we had been travelling through the morning, we were greeted with the offer of a late breakfast, which was a really thoughtful start to our stay. Anjajavy truly feels like paradise. You are surrounded by beaches, dry forest (including baobabs), a beautiful oasis and the most amazing wildlife and plant life. This all stretches so far and in their conservation efforts Anjajavy only continues to acquire land; we would love to return one day and keep exploring. I believe they run educational village trips too, though we focused on wildlife as we had visited villages earlier in our time in Madagascar. It is important to understand daily life for many Malagasy people. The sifakas and common brown lemurs that frequent the resort are wonderful to see; you can also spot other types of lemurs on walks (alone or guided), including night walks. They do not feed the lemurs, the lemurs simply see Anjajavy as a safe place to be (and there are natural food sources since there are trees all around). The Anjajavy team also work to reintroduce lemur species into the area. We were able to see an aye aye mother and her pup before release, which was a very special experience. Whilst in temporary captivity, the enclosure set up for the ayes ayes was fantastic and you could see they were extremely well cared for, and how the team maintained their wild foraging behaviours. Some mouse lemurs took advantage of this set up, being able to squeeze into the enclosure! We saw many birds, including the elusive Madagascan sea eagle. The early morning bird tour is definitely recommended. We also saw toads, lizards, snakes and bats amongst much other wildlife! For animal enthusiasts, you really would have the time of your life here. The lodge we stayed in was wonderful, with a big bath, ocean view and a hammock for relaxing! The staff are absolutely amazing. They are all so warm, friendly and knowledgeable. Their passion is clear. We learned so much at Anjajavy and raved about it to everyone we know. We were half-board; tea in the oasis was great to tide us over until dinner (you also can’t beat delicious nibbles surrounded by beautiful flora and fauna, and bouncing lemurs), though we also had the odd lunch. I am a vegetarian and was always catered to; I always had the option to eat a vegetarian dinner main prepared by the chef or choose from the lunch menu (they do great pizzas). Often my husband chose the vegetarian main, too. You receive a starter, main and dessert. As honeymooners we also had dinner one night in the oasis; it was so romantic. We also adopted a tree and went on a sunset cruise through the mangroves. These are activities you can arrange regardless of being on a honeymoon and I would recommend them all. Madagascar is a fascinating island full of wonderful life. Anjajavy Le Lodge is a luxurious place to enjoy a huge portion of this. I have included just a small sample of the hundreds of photos we took!

This is a stunning luxury lodge. The rooms are excellent, with beautiful bathrooms, 'lounge' and deckings to watch the sea. The 'oasis' is a lovely quiet place for afternoon tea, watching the lemurs. The reserve provides pleasant walks along the pretty & wild bays. There are numerous activity options or you can just relax (after weeks of travel) doing very little. Sunsets were amazing!! Food was excellent & delicious, with good choices for each set dinner, and it was great to have dinners in different locations (eg restaurant, beach, 'lawn') on different days. All service was very attentive. It was excellent that water is provided in metal flasks or glass bottles in room, rather than wasting plastic. It is a shame not more of the rooms have solar power. However, I did find it rather expensive (when compared with other east African lodges), especially with the charter flights required to get there.

We saved Anjajavy for the end of our Madagascar trip and four nights there were not enough - we never wanted to leave. The service, the food, the staff, the lemurs - everything about this place was heaven! It has a perfect balance of offering a relaxing beach holiday as well as activities such as visiting the local village, boat trips, walks to learn about the natural environment and wildlife, so if you start to get restless sitting on a beach all day, there is always something to do. The lodge is also doing a fantastic job of preserving the local fauna and wildlife and supporting the local village. And the lemurs!!!! Every afternoon, afternoon tea is offered in the gardens where the lemurs come for their afternoon tea! Never wanted to leave!!!
