We had missed the last ferry to Tioman Island and wandered the streets of Mersing in need of a room for the night. A lot of the cheaper hotels that we tried were booked out so we ended up at Hotel Havanita, expecting to be spoiled for the night. As previous reviews have mentioned, at 195MYR this is amongst the most expensive places to stay at in Mersing.

On the positive side, the room was spacious, the bed comfortable and it was overall fairly clean.

On the downside, it is abundantly clear that this hotel needs an overhaul. There are patches on the wall where the paint has come off, wires coming out of the lights above the bathroom mirror, the shower curtain (no idea why there still exist anywhere in the world to be honest) was gross and while I do believe the bathtub had been cleaned to the best of one's ability, it was just looking so worn and stained that I can't imagine anyone would choose to take a bath in there.

Breakfast is included in the price and while I have seen a lot of VERY basic breakfasts in my life, this is potentially the worst I have ever come across. 10 seconds after we sat down, a plate with what resembled scrambled eggs, a square looking sausage and a pile of (maybe) baked beans was put in front of us without comment - all freezing cold. My only explanation is that this was 'cooked' hours earlier and had just been sitting there. It was simply inedible and I'd like to stress again that I don't use this term lightly.

To finish our stay off we asked for a cab to be called at a certain time, and while the receptionist briefly looked up from her phone and appeared to acknowledge our request, no cab was there and no one seemed to remember us asking for one an hour later.

Again, if we had paid 70MYR for this room I would give it 4 stars and say it's as you'd expect but in my view this place is really not worth the money.

After a long hour driving from Kota Bahru to Johor Bahru, I decided to stop at Mersing & stay for a night with my wife and baby. We passed by the hotel and immediately we're attracted with the hotel's looks and decorations. We decided to stayed for a night at the hotel after surveyed through out Mersing town area. We have chosen Havanita hotel because it looks "family oriented". With reasonable price, beautiful decorations, comfortable bedrooms and helpful staff, the hotel shine brightly compare to the other hotels around Mersing town area. Highly recommend.

stayed in the hotel for couple of nights in may 2012, honestly speaking i'm a bit disappointed with overall conditions of the hotel despite the good comments. The room is average, the tv furniture door is broken, the hot shower is erratic, the tables at the dining hall are dusty, the cushion at the lobby are stained and looks tired. I am disgusted to discover that one of the public toilets has not been cleaned properly, eeyuck. Nevertheless , the hotel location is strategic - at the centre of the Mersing town and the breakfast is acceptable. Most probably will not come again.

Stayed here for a day when I visited Mersing for a business trip. Overall, the place had a nice decor, new and well-designed. The facilities however were not well maintained. There were ants in my bathroom, the water pressure for the shower was too low and I could not control the water temperature well. The water from the shower was either too cold or too hot. I also experienced two power cuts during my stay. They were only a few minutes long but still a bit annoying as I was using the internet, which was reasonable fast when it was working. I also noticed a lizard dropping on the sofa near the reception area.Breakfast was not served buffet-style. I had to order and wait for my breakfast. Things were not so bad though as the room was generally clean and the staff there were nice (it helped that I'm a local so I could communicate easily with them). However, I expected more from this hotel given the price that I paid for the room. Personally, I would prefer to stay at Timotel Hotel if I am to visit Mersing again.

Stayed in Mersing at Havanita as a couple doing a stopover for an onward ferry journey to Tioman Island the next day. We chose this hotel since we liked the room pics as shown on tripadvisor.

Getting there: After being dropped off a Transanasional bus from Singapore at the Mersing bus stop, we could see the bridge and Hotel Timotel's signboard. However the peak afternoon sun dampened our walking spirit and we hired a taxi from the bus stop to drop us to Havanita for 10 RM which is barely about half a km away.

Checkin: We had made the booking on the phone prior to our visit and we were offered the standard rack rate and asked to pay a nominal refundable deposit on checkin.

Pros: Walkable distance from the bus stop, close to a 7/11 across the road and a McDonalds and a market thats just across the bridge. Rooms are good and spacious. Free wifi and they also provide a net connected desktop at the lobby. Walking distance (10 mins) from the ferry to go to Tioman.

Cons: Were unable to find a suitable socket to charge our micro usb android phones that use round pins. Malaysia uses square ones. Also, seems the hotel provides Breakfast. We were told the hotel does not provide dinner. The bathroom lights had cobwebs on closer inspection and the windows open to what looks like a unused car repair / junkyard.

What saved our day:
SInce we checked in late afternoon and were hungry, we asked for a in-room service. A special mention to the in house chef Gurpreet who readily served up a delicious fare of chicken fried rice with an Indian touch and a club sandwich. He also saved the day for us by providing his personal charger since our chargers were incompatible with the hotel wall sockets. The next morning after a hurried breakfast we were running to catch our bus and he also packed for us club sandwiches as a special treat from his side and assured us that we would have plenty of time to make it to the ferry, which we did ! Thanks also to the cheerful young lady at the reception who did her best to make us comfortable despite the language barrier and also offered us an alternate room when we tried communicating with her that we were looking for a compatible power socket. When that didn't work, we asked if we could charge off the usb ports of the PC and she helped us with that too.

Given the helpful nature of the staff and service that goes beyond, I'd stay there again, but will remember to bring my travel adaptors :)

The room was ok but they have to do something with d air cond, it was too noisy. The so called ala carte American breakfast was sucks. Staff were seen uninterested. Will definitely nt coming back.

Driving to Mersing during CNY was not a good move, when especially hotels are fully booked everywhere.
We were in Mersing to let our kids encounter the 'padi field' experience as part of their education trip.
Thou some roads leading to certain areas made us felt creepy and with mixed feelings, Hotel Havanita saved us with a room enough to cramp us in.
Thou, hotel food was not a paradise at all, the service and ambience was its good points. =)

first time in Hotel havanita mersing last night, one of the indian customer service -Joshua gave me a wrong information and wrong room and he denied he had make such a big mistake, and he scolded me with all the bad lauguages,..such as Babi, bodoh , stupid chinese and etc. how can a customer service can scold a customer like this.. it is a personal attack and racist, he said he has been working here 4-5 years .. i was so surprise that the company still employ him with such a bad attitude. when i said i want to talk to manager but he said he is the person in charge, and he is the superviour. but he bluff me, i did check with the assistance manager the next day morning, he is not the person in charge, that way he treated the customer.. really really bad. i will never go there again.
