If you are thinking of staying here, don’t. It was most likely quite grand about 30 years ago, but nothing has been done since. In my room, the Tv doesn’t work, neither does the fridge, no hot water, aircon struggling, shower pressure very low.

The rooms were spacious and the floors were stripped of their carpeting. It was also clean.

However, this hotel is really old and it shows. Air conditioning vibrated with such noise, we had to lower the intensity (which are only 3 levels).
The toilet had very weak flushing power (yikes!)
Curtains were dusty and allowed sunlight to penetrate via gaps.
We were so worried the shower fixtures would fall off!

If you are just staying one night and looking for a cheap, clean hotel, this is the place.
Also a plus; Ong Nasi Lemak is just across the street.

It's been long time I didn't write my review about my travelling activity.

End of July I was staying with my husband and my toddler son.i don't mine if the hotel was old or else.however the service that the reception give so not called hotelier.

The reception staff all are gentlemen,no politeness and happy to serve a guest.

My room very clean and big.however the aroma when you open the room not nice.its smell so sticky. During night time there is no air conditioning. My kattle in room got problem we have report to them at reception but no action , I can't boil hot water to make my son milk.its need my husband come down at down stairs to take it by him self.the hotel staff not show that their wanted to help us.

So for me even it's cheap but not worthy to stay if the staff not willing to help.

if you wanna blink...do it now..because this story of mine will bring u into a lot of fantasy.. why? don't believe me?
ok..first..i was a desperate traveller at the time i booked this hotel because i did not plan my trip, don't even plan where i'm going with my family..i'm out from my home in malacca at 8pm, stop by at my parent's in KL at 10pm then straight on my journey to no where up to north.. at 12midnight, my wife asked me where do i wanna go..i replied to her "actually i don't know" :) then i stop at the rest area at RTC Perak, eat & rest, i start looking for hotels and tripadvisor suggest me Hotel Grand Crystal Kedah.. reasonable price, good looking hotel, near to town, easy access to local food restaurant and a lot of things going on nearby to this hotel.. in blink of eyes, my mother finger tap onto the confirm booking tap.. proceed with payment.. off we go to the Hotel in Alor Setar.. simple as that!!..i arrived there at 6pm (drove the car at 80-90 km/h) i stop in front of the hotel.. go to the lobby.. hit the bell and pop!! the receptionist appear infront of me.. a good looking man in his hotel uniform with a smile he greet me "welcome to Hotel Grand Crystal Kedah, Sir"..i gave him the detail of my booking.. and i know i'm suppose to check-in earliest at 2pm.. but trying my luck i asked him for early check-in..and guess what? he willingly and kindly said that he will assist me with the early check in without any cost impact :)..wow!! very good hotel i said to myself.. then after he check here & there.. confirm!! i can enter my room at 11am.. yes!! now i only have to bring my family for a breakfast and then fill our time until 11 am by going around city of Alor Setar.. at 11am i when there, my key is ready and my check in process is complete.. very fast.. very efficient & offcourse i'm very happy.. we had a very comfortable stay there for 4 days & 3 nights.. but offcourse there is some setback of this hotel, its very old building and due for refurbishment, the breakfast preparation is not so variety and even there is no refill once the food is finish but there is still people comes for breakfast and we only take what left in the tray.. in overall, it is a good hotel, nice and spacious.. but need some management involvement in getting the building look attractive and to make it more fun.. i strongly recommend this hotel and please try it yourself.. u will feel satisfied.. the end....

Hotel has spacious room, clean and ideal for small children.

My prince and princess enjoyed themselves. Our room has lcd tv and astro. Stayed at the deluxe double room with timber flooring and children can play freely. The room size is 40 % larger, with bathtub compared to surrounding conventional hotel of similar category and price in Alor star. Hotel has a beautiful large pool but no wading pool, so keep an eye on your children they in the water. Surprisingly it has mini bar, coffee teas facilities and toilet with shower gel and shampoo.

Wifi signal is fine but they could improve on the variety of breakfast. Similar food served over the 3 days of our stay. Staff are friendly and we will sure to return here again.

We enjoyed out stay without paying through our nose. Highly recommended

when arriving, the front desk staff quit friendly but should learn more about customer service. He should learn which task to prioritize, to entertain the customer in front of him or to answering a lot of phone call or to give an instruction to his buddy. Oh i forget to mention, he just the only person sit at that desk. I think i should forgive him coz my check time processing time is just not more than 15 minutes. My bad coz i book this hotel via agoda.com so this gentlemen issue me two separate bills, one for my room and one for breakfast for tomorrow. Off course with two time credit card swiped. Luckily the bank doesn't count how many you swipe your card monthly so no extra charge for that (hahaha).
The room is quit spacious but the interior if was not that good. Closet without a door, no small towel provided and even you don't have any foot mate so you must ensure to dry your feet after bathroom.
My room happen to face the sentosa mall and at level 5. The curtain not separated from first layer and second layer so you can't open it at all otherwise someone on the opposite building will not be happy of whats going on in your room (another haha).
Alor Setar is bit hot during my arrival so i guess better for me to have in room dining coz the price offer is affordable and have a lot of variety. I choose Kampung Fried Rice for my lunch and the taste is good. The serving time also quit considerable but a but funny coz when i call at first, they asked me to call later coz they have no chef on that time. Means their chef is changing their shift. Since I'm too lazy to go out so i just wait for their chef to come.
In the evening, i plan to take a walk around the hotel and wish to try Nasi Kandar nearby (about 5 min walking distance) but i could not do so, once I'm at the main road in front of the hotel, i saw to many dogs walking around and they don't look so friendly. I just felt unsafe on that time so i guess i just have another in room dining. when i called something funny happen again, at first they can give assurance of my order coz as usual no chef around, my first order was Lamb Chop. 2-3 min later, they call me and said i can have that menu, but, i had change my mind and want to change the menu to Spice Chicken Chop. They said ok but have to check first. I hang out and another 2 min later they called me again and asked if i can have my first order instead. Coz I'm to hungry to think i just said yes. About half and hour later, my meals is ready but its not good as my lunch earlier. The meats is hard and difficult to chew and i dare to say, i can't consume it at all. Luckily the come together with some fries.
As a conclusion, yup you may considered this hotel coz their price is affordable, spacious room, good internet connection and a part of that, nothing special about this hotel. The surrounding just not really good but if you have your own transport i guess its ok.

From the outside, it looked a pretty okay hotel. The price was Rm108 per night which at a small town like this, you would expect a bit better.

Once the elevators opened, you will get an assault of that odor very common to old unwashed carpets and smoking allowed rooms. The bed is curved and lacks support and the walls are stained with fingerprints.

No breakfast. To have breakfast, be prepared to pay another RM50.

Will not return.
Will not recommend.

My first impression of this hotel is that it looks dark & gloomy. The hotel looks like it never had any renovation to improve its appearance since the 1970s, from the dusty fountain, creaky elevators, everything here looks antique. They had an air conditioning problem since the time i checked in, until around 10PM. I will never recommend this hotel to any friends or family. Avoid at all costs.
