Sunset Valley is located in the middle of the island of Langkawi overlooking the beautiful rice paddies with a view to the 500 million year old geological formation and rain forest. Our resort has 6 traditional Malay houses, all with inside and outside living areas, kitchen, veranda, air conditioning and western style luxury bathrooms. There is a swimming pool and pavilion with BBQ facilities. We also offer breakfast as an optional extra on request. In our little convenience store our guests can buy food and drinks for meal preparation in their own houses. This is especially convenient for late arrivals. We are happy to help and advise our guests choose the most suitable island activities for them. The most popular activities are: snorkeling or scuba diving, mangrove boat tours, luxury boat cruises, island hopping, jungle walking, kayak tours, SPA and massage treatments, and many more. Another great way to discover the island is by car or motorbike which we are happy to book for you.

Having stayed in the traditional malay houses previously, this time we tried the modern villas they also have. The hosts were friendly and extremely helpful again. The villa was amazing. Incredibly hi-spec with lots of thoughtful details. An excellent choice for a family or friends get together. Very peaceful. Hope to be back soon.

A wonderful place to stay if you are looking for tranquility in an authentic Malaysian setting. The resort has friendly and helpful management and is well maintained. The location is such that you are a short distance from beaches, many restaurants and Langkawi’s main tourist attractions yet you can experience the peaceful view of rice paddies and incredible sunsets.

We stayed at field house for tonight’s only and wish we stayed there longer! The houses location is a bit far from any shops or roads and because of that you would be able to enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature The host was very welcoming and helpful What made everything even more perfect was the history behind the houses and how they were actual old structures that were brought into this space and restored by the hosts

A big shout out to Gudrun and David for hosting us in their beautiful home, Sunset Valley. Very gracious hosts, always checking in on us and making sure we had everything we needed. Happy to have met them (and their 3 dogs and 3 cats) and get acquainted. We spent 1 month in The Garden House at Sunset Valley and I think we couldn’t have picked better. Location is very central - 15 minutes drive to Chenang, 15 mins to Kuah, 15 mins to Tj Rhu - yet you feel like you’re quite away from everything. The land is serene, you have a great view of sunset over the paddy fields and you can listen to birdsong all day long. We loved the pool verandah - it is very well equipped, you have all you need for a pool side bbq, including a fridge to keep your beers cold and a built-in bluetooth speaker system. The house itself was perfect for us, an open-concept restored old kampung house, with a fully equipped kitchen allowing us to prepare our own meals, and with a big verandah where you can work or just sit and enjoy the space.

I definitely recommend this place for anyone seeking a private, chilled, spacious location. I think it’s great for single families as well as bigger groups since they have a few houses to choose from.

Thank you Gudrun and David (and Catmandu) for making us feel so at home. It was hard to leave but we know we’ll be back.

Located centrally on Langkawi between hills and rice fields, the Sunset Valley Houses is a unique opportunity to stay secluded whilst also having the possibility to access local communities, shops, mountains and beaches within a few minutes drive.  The houses are all different and are constructed in a traditional Malay style. We stayed in the Gate House which has beautiful wooden features, high ceilings, a small kitchen and excellent water pressure in the shower! The staff at Sunset Valley were very helpful, kind and organized. The owners, Gudrun and David, welcomed us to a very impressive property, where not only the houses are maintained to a high standard but also the surrounding garden is meticulously kept.

This was the perfect location for our group holiday - we were a mixed group of families and couples and the set up was perfect. Loads of space for the children to wonder round safely; beautiful, warm pool; perfectly equipped BBQ and bar area and comfortable villas with everything you need. You are a only a short drive from the attractions and busier parts of the island. but it felt so good coming back to our sanctuary at the end of the day for sunset swims. We are booking again for Christmas - that should tell you everything! David and Gudrun were brilliant hosts, warm, friendly and relaxed. Home from home. Can't wait to go back.

We stayed in the 'Paddy House' ( not named after an Irishman, it overlooks the Padi fields!!). A beautiful, authentic Malay house which is over 180 years old. This wooden structure is 'tailor made' for this climate, with tall ceilings and wooden floors, the air is drawn up through the house with a fan gently circulating the air. We stayed 7 nights and never felt the need for a/c, in fact some nights the duvet was very welcome! Despite it's age all the modern comforts are provided,an excellent shower, fridge, small kitchen area and more power sockets you can shake a stick at. We spent many a morning and evening on the patio leisurely watching the amazing myriad of wildlife meander by, from hornbills to monitor lizards and geckos. For any birdwatchers, too many too mention. The pool area is fantastic,it's cleared every morning by the lovely Rose and is crystal clean. The pavilion next to the pool has a fridge for your beers and wine, a music system with blue tooth and a weber barbque for residents use. A great facility for couples or families. The gardens are an absolute delight and, coming from a concrete jungle, we really appreciated the 'openness' and gorgeous colours. Despite the many months of lockdown, David and Gudrun have clearly been extremely busy on the general upkeep of the whole property as everything from the gardens to the individual houses are in excellent condition. The passion they have for this business has not been hit by the pandemic and we found them to be the perfect hosts, not intrusive but immediately available if needed. Not to mention very convivial company when having a coffee or beer!! We definitely return.

With travel limited only to domestic destinations, and even that being a relatively new thing after months of restricted movement in Malaysia, we were itching to travel again. Still wanting to avoid large groups of people -- and we had heard places in Penang, Melaka, and Cameron Highlands were packed -- we set our sights on Sunset Valley in Langkawi again -- always a favourite. There are only six private houses on the property, so "crowding" is NEVER a thing there! The Malay kampung houses have all been beautifully refurbished and kitted out with all the modern conveniences you could want. The resort hosts, David and Gudrun, who run the self-catered resort, are (like many places now) offering attractive discounts during this time, so we decided on a four-night stay. Since it's a self-catered type of resort, with each house having a fully furnished kitchen, we got some groceries and cooked most of our meals there -- we ate outside only once for a dinner with other friends. (Also, since Langkawi is a duty-free island, you can get bottles of decent sparkling wine for around RM30 and have your own 'bubbly brunch' with ease!) As with previous trips, everything was great, but in the current climate, Sunset Valley really is just even more ideal. You can have a much-needed relaxing getaway and enjoy the best of Langkawi at your leisure without having to worry about sanitation and crowds like you would in a large hotel. We rented a small car and were able to go out shopping and exploring when we wanted (shops require masks and most of them have the MySejahtera QR code ready for scanning), but were also able to just relax at the house, swim in the pool, do exercise or read at the common-area pavilion which also has a nice BBQ (there were only a handful of other people at the property when we were there, and we hardly ever saw them!) -- there was one afternoon when a big storm blew in, and we enjoyed a fantastic hour or two listening to the pouring rain and having drinks on the verandah of our little house. On other days, we loved watching the many birds that frequent the area -- kingfishers, sunbirds, racquet-tailed drongos, and even hornbills! David and Gudrun are always able to recommend great places to eat or pick up provisions, which is a very welcome personal touch. As residents of the island for many years, they can fill guests in on things to do or places to go that might otherwise be missed. It doesn't hurt that they're genuinely friendly people with a real passion for Langkawi, too. They build friendships with many of their guests, and having stayed there before, we're happy to be counted among that group! Like every place that has a reliance on tourism, Langkawi has been badly hurt by the Covid-19 pandemic. So while domestic travel is the only sort of travel that Malaysian residents can do now, it's a terrific opportunity to rediscover this great island. And if you want a guarantee of relaxation in a beautiful, idyllic setting, Sunset Valley is a good place to go. You have to manage your expectations, though -- this is not a full-service luxury hotel, but more like a B&B where you're left largely on your own, which is just what we were after. We really enjoyed our four nights there; it went by much too fast!

My dear Mr Chadley I have read some wonderful erudite and beautifully crafted reviews in my time but this one takes the cake! You are a true wordsmith and your delight with finding the ideal place for a break during a pandemic adds a sense of drama and passion to our pride and joy, Sunset Valley. Thank you so much for your very kind words and of course Gudrun and I are absolutely delighted that you had such an enjoyable time here. We too thoroughly enjoyed your company and splendid repartee whist savoring a delicious Scotch and a fragrant cigar on our verandah. Memories are made of this!
