Sunset Valley is located in the middle of the island of Langkawi overlooking the beautiful rice paddies with a view to the 500 million year old geological formation and rain forest. Our resort has 6 traditional Malay houses, all with inside and outside living areas, kitchen, veranda, air conditioning and western style luxury bathrooms. There is a swimming pool and pavilion with BBQ facilities. We also offer breakfast as an optional extra on request. In our little convenience store our guests can buy food and drinks for meal preparation in their own houses. This is especially convenient for late arrivals. We are happy to help and advise our guests choose the most suitable island activities for them. The most popular activities are: snorkeling or scuba diving, mangrove boat tours, luxury boat cruises, island hopping, jungle walking, kayak tours, SPA and massage treatments, and many more. Another great way to discover the island is by car or motorbike which we are happy to book for you.

With travel limited only to domestic destinations, and even that being a relatively new thing after months of restricted movement in Malaysia, we were itching to travel again. Still wanting to avoid large groups of people -- and we had heard places in Penang, Melaka, and Cameron Highlands were packed -- we set our sights on Sunset Valley in Langkawi again -- always a favourite. There are only six private houses on the property, so "crowding" is NEVER a thing there! The Malay kampung houses have all been beautifully refurbished and kitted out with all the modern conveniences you could want. The resort hosts, David and Gudrun, who run the self-catered resort, are (like many places now) offering attractive discounts during this time, so we decided on a four-night stay. Since it's a self-catered type of resort, with each house having a fully furnished kitchen, we got some groceries and cooked most of our meals there -- we ate outside only once for a dinner with other friends. (Also, since Langkawi is a duty-free island, you can get bottles of decent sparkling wine for around RM30 and have your own 'bubbly brunch' with ease!) As with previous trips, everything was great, but in the current climate, Sunset Valley really is just even more ideal. You can have a much-needed relaxing getaway and enjoy the best of Langkawi at your leisure without having to worry about sanitation and crowds like you would in a large hotel. We rented a small car and were able to go out shopping and exploring when we wanted (shops require masks and most of them have the MySejahtera QR code ready for scanning), but were also able to just relax at the house, swim in the pool, do exercise or read at the common-area pavilion which also has a nice BBQ (there were only a handful of other people at the property when we were there, and we hardly ever saw them!) -- there was one afternoon when a big storm blew in, and we enjoyed a fantastic hour or two listening to the pouring rain and having drinks on the verandah of our little house. On other days, we loved watching the many birds that frequent the area -- kingfishers, sunbirds, racquet-tailed drongos, and even hornbills! David and Gudrun are always able to recommend great places to eat or pick up provisions, which is a very welcome personal touch. As residents of the island for many years, they can fill guests in on things to do or places to go that might otherwise be missed. It doesn't hurt that they're genuinely friendly people with a real passion for Langkawi, too. They build friendships with many of their guests, and having stayed there before, we're happy to be counted among that group! Like every place that has a reliance on tourism, Langkawi has been badly hurt by the Covid-19 pandemic. So while domestic travel is the only sort of travel that Malaysian residents can do now, it's a terrific opportunity to rediscover this great island. And if you want a guarantee of relaxation in a beautiful, idyllic setting, Sunset Valley is a good place to go. You have to manage your expectations, though -- this is not a full-service luxury hotel, but more like a B&B where you're left largely on your own, which is just what we were after. We really enjoyed our four nights there; it went by much too fast!

My dear Mr Chadley I have read some wonderful erudite and beautifully crafted reviews in my time but this one takes the cake! You are a true wordsmith and your delight with finding the ideal place for a break during a pandemic adds a sense of drama and passion to our pride and joy, Sunset Valley. Thank you so much for your very kind words and of course Gudrun and I are absolutely delighted that you had such an enjoyable time here. We too thoroughly enjoyed your company and splendid repartee whist savoring a delicious Scotch and a fragrant cigar on our verandah. Memories are made of this! Thank you again for your splendid review and we hope to see you again soon Very best wishes, stay safe, well and happy

The stay at garden house was awesome! The design is really very thoughtful for those who wish to feeling a touch with nature. We have our privacy in the house and balcony. Location is ideal, close to Kuah city center and other major attractions. I truly enjoy the pool and paddy field view. Highly recommended!

Sunset Valley is a real treat. This beautiful resort in the middle of Langkawi offers everything you are looking for for a peaceful and relaxing stay. The houses are all in the traditional malaysian style, tasteful and very comforting. They are furnished and equipped with everything you need for a short or a long term vacation. We especially enjoyed the huge front porch with a spectacular view on the paddy fields and the sunsets. The garden is beautiful and well maintained with a nice and relaxing swimming pool. It is home to many exotic birds we enjoyed to watch. The hosts Gudrun and David made us feel welcome and at home from the very beginning. A special thanks to Rose who took care of the cleaning and doing laundry and much more. We stayed in beautiful Sunset Valley during the whole lockdown of corona virus and couldn't find a better place. We definitely recommend it.

Booked a 3 nights stay ard Nov 21 for a stay in Dec for USD 100 per night(3 nights) at Sunset. Unfortunately my partner got ill and was not medically cleared to travel a few days after. Even though the cert technically covered for 2 weeks with a 2nd review after, we knew it would be a risk to travel during this period. Made arrangements to cancel my flights/another stay at Ambong Ambong as well. All cancellations were accepted on medical grounds with proper certification. Except this property. We even explained that we really wanted to come but was just unfortunate that we could not travel due to medical grounds. 1) Hotel.com/myself spoke, wrote emails to Gudrun/David(owners) several times to refund our money. Their refund policy is 30 days. I booked on 21st Nov for a stay on Dec 12th. I attempted to cancel the booking on Nov 26th, 2 weeks before my intended stay. But their cancellation date expires on Nov 8th. I had to go back in Time to qualify to cancel the booking. 2) Gudrun refused to refund even a single dollar. Saying its NOT HER PROBLEM that my partner is unwell and to claim it from medical insurance(travellers buy medical insurance only when all plans are fixed, atleast me. So i had not bought travel insurance yet). For someone in the hospitality industry, this was shocking, extremely rude/arrogant and not compassionate. 3) But Hotels.com/Sunset/myself agreed that if someone books the field house in the next 2 weeks, they would refund. So i cancelled my booking asap and freed up the house. But no one booked the property at all for the next 2 weeks. Nearly all the properties in Sunset was not booked in Dec(peak season). No one went there. 4) Since no one booked the room anyway, i told Gudrun/David that there was no opportunity cost lost, no reveue loss or cost incurred to them. By not refunding they were simply grabbing money for no services rendered. As classless as they are, they refused and were totally obnoxious/rude. They raised their voices, took the full amount of SGD 425 for no services rendered. They did not even refund a single cent. They incurred no loss but just did not have the heart or compassion. 5) Hotels.com were kind to talk to them a last time as they saw my reason and felt it in their policy/hearts to support me. But the money grabbers Gudrun/David hid behind their cancellation policy of 30 days and refused. Policies are guidelines and not absolute. Discretion should always be applied. Not for these 2 money minded owners. 6) The owners did offer us a free stay at another time. After such a terrible experience in dealing with them, i would never step into this property even if it was for free. So i refused. And i also knew they were insincere in their offer. If they were they could hv refunded atleast 50%. So dear travel friends, i have traveled to 100's of properties/places as you can see from my reviews/badges. I hardly give negative reviews to anyone. This is the worst prperty and experience i have ever had in my travelling's. This property and its owners go against all principles and ethics of travel/hospitality. Despite conducting their business in Asia, they have failed terribly to live the Asian values of kindness/compassion & hospitality. They are only interested in money and they would not hesitate to ruin your holiday experience if there is any issue of service/money. Why the owners are only interested in your money and not in providing a holiday experience: Below are some of their stay conditions found on their website. This is what you would would have to to pay extra for even after paying more than USD 100 per night. – Breakfast: RM19.50 per person – Extra house cleaning & fresh linen and towels:RM 50.00 per clean – Air-con: RM 25.00 per day :) - Fresh towels only given after 3 or 4 days - You empty your own rubbish bin into their garbage bin For USD 100++ a night, you don't get breakfast, you have to pay separately for Air con!!!(despite Langkawi being a hot/humid place throughout the year), you get only 1 set of towels/linen throughout your entire stay, you pay RM 50 to clean/turn down your room with fresh linen and you have to empty your own rubbish. Wow, absolutely disgustingly wow. So what service does this property and owners really provide for you? Absolutely NOTHING! That's a fact from their own website, see pics. They do provide a "home away from experience" clearing yr own trash and paying A/C bills : ) I booked from a external site so did not realise all of this. No where in my Asia travels have i had to pay for aircon and 1 set of towels for 5 days and pay to have a cleaning/turn down service. Their room rates are pretty high. And the above conditions gives you an insight on the owners attitudes and core purpose. They are here to make money at any cost without providing any service. In summary, i was initially upset at the owners unkindness and arrogance at not refunding me. But SGD 400+ is not a big amount, so its ok. Even though i did not stay at this property, my experience with them gave me insights to their way of doing business and their general attitude towards hospitality. I want to make travelers aware of what these owners are about and what one could potentially experience if they stay at Sunset Valley. They are not interested in the traveler. Only the money in their wallets. Such owners/properties could seriously destroy ones holidays & mood. They are a real disgrace to small property owners all over the world. They take your money even when they have not incurred any loss of revenue or opportunity. I am now very wary and afraid to use small properties bec of these kind of ruthless owners in the industry. The property is beautiful. But this was the work and project of the previous owners. Malaysia, its people are warm, kind and extremely compassionate. To many businesses in Malaysia, guests comforts and well being is of most importance. Ambong Ambong, another property i was supposed to stay after Sunset refunded my booking immediately and wished a speedy recovery to my partner. So did Air Asia/Malindo etc. Thats Malaysian hospitality! Gudrun & David despite earning off this country, do not live or exemplify the virtues and values of the Malaysian travel industry. You can see it clearly in their dealings with me as well as their payable "facilities". And you can see their very attack minded responses to negative reviews on TA of other travelers. Its always the travelers fault. So i am looking fwd to their response to my review. : ) There is no such thing as 0 stars, so 1 star. My recommendation is to stay away from this place and its owners. Its always the travelers fault and not theirs. They never compromise on anything. These people could potentially ruin your entire holiday. Lots of better properties with similar experiences and vastly superior services available in Langkawi

Mr Sinaya wrote the same review in January this year. We reported the review to Tripadvisor for violating Tripadvisor's review guidelines. Tripadvisor confirmed the violation and removed the review. Recently Mr Sinaya wrote the same review again which we again reported to Tripadvisor for violating Tripadvisor's review guidelines. This time Tripadvisor decided it did not violate their review guidelines despite the same content so the review stays. We now strongly query Tripadvisor's inconsistency and competency in the application and administration of their review guidelines. It now seems that anyone can write anything on Tripadvisor with impunity. Mr Sinaya has never been to Sunset Valley, the review consists of personal attacks and insults towards us and is full of incorrect claims and statements. IN VIEW OF THE ABOVE WE DECIDED NOT TO RESPOND TO THIS REVIEW.
