Sunset Valley is located in the middle of the island of Langkawi overlooking the beautiful rice paddies with a view to the 500 million year old geological formation and rain forest. Our resort has 6 traditional Malay houses, all with inside and outside living areas, kitchen, veranda, air conditioning and western style luxury bathrooms. There is a swimming pool and pavilion with BBQ facilities. We also offer breakfast as an optional extra on request. In our little convenience store our guests can buy food and drinks for meal preparation in their own houses. This is especially convenient for late arrivals. We are happy to help and advise our guests choose the most suitable island activities for them. The most popular activities are: snorkeling or scuba diving, mangrove boat tours, luxury boat cruises, island hopping, jungle walking, kayak tours, SPA and massage treatments, and many more. Another great way to discover the island is by car or motorbike which we are happy to book for you.

Detailed Reviews
Having stayed in 2018 at the Gate house, for a change of location this time we stayed at the Paddy house., which was a great choice. All the facilities were excellent, the place was spotless, the views spectacular and we had a daily visit on the balcony from Cat Mandu. The pool has a beautiful view of the surrounding padi fields and the mountain ranges and as you would expect spectacular sunset views!
David and Gudrun were as usual great hosts and very helpful with all things Langkawi, so if you make it to Langkawi we fully recommend adding Sunset Valley to your holiday location, also a special mention to Rose who is always there, very helpful and makes your day when you hear her singing as she goes about her work.

My dear Old Boy 99 Your review had made our day. Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement. Due to the very competitive nature of online booking agents all bombarding their customers for reviews, we do get many positive reviews from these sources but we do not get many reviews on Tripadvisor as a result. Lately we had a rather negative review on Tripadvisor from someone who has never been here, which we think is quite unfair. Your review and Rose's cheerful disposition and lovely singing was the tonic we needed. Again many thanks!

We stayed in the 'Paddy House' ( not named after an Irishman, it overlooks the Padi fields!!). A beautiful, authentic Malay house which is over 180 years old. This wooden structure is 'tailor made' for this climate, with tall ceilings and wooden floors, the air is drawn up through the house with a fan gently circulating the air. We stayed 7 nights and never felt the need for a/c, in fact some nights the duvet was very welcome! Despite it's age all the modern comforts are provided,an excellent shower, fridge, small kitchen area and more power sockets you can shake a stick at. We spent many a morning and evening on the patio leisurely watching the amazing myriad of wildlife meander by, from hornbills to monitor lizards and geckos. For any birdwatchers, too many too mention.
The pool area is fantastic,it's cleared every morning by the lovely Rose and is crystal clean. The pavilion next to the pool has a fridge for your beers and wine, a music system with blue tooth and a weber barbque for residents use. A great facility for couples or families. The gardens are an absolute delight and, coming from a concrete jungle, we really appreciated the 'openness' and gorgeous colours.
Despite the many months of lockdown, David and Gudrun have clearly been extremely busy on the general upkeep of the whole property as everything from the gardens to the individual houses are in excellent condition. The passion they have for this business has not been hit by the pandemic and we found them to be the perfect hosts, not intrusive but immediately available if needed. Not to mention very convivial company when having a coffee or beer!!
We definitely return.

Located centrally on Langkawi between hills and rice fields, the Sunset Valley Houses is a unique opportunity to stay secluded whilst also having the possibility to access local communities, shops, mountains and beaches within a few minutes drive.
The houses are all different and are constructed in a traditional Malay style. We stayed in the Gate House which has beautiful wooden features, high ceilings, a small kitchen and excellent water pressure in the shower! The staff at Sunset Valley were very helpful, kind and organized. The owners, Gudrun and David, welcomed us to a very impressive property, where not only the houses are maintained to a high standard but also the surrounding garden is meticulously kept.

I am not online much , but I have been so surprised by this visit that I decided to bother and write this . I agree with bad reviews.
First , let’s be fair . Views are stunning and you can eve catch a sunset in this bucolic surrounding. Houses are ok, if you like traditional Malay houses without aircon and with a creaking floor.
Sadly but there is nothing else positive to say. IMHO very lousy standards of hospitality.
First, for a price of 150 dollars a night you will need to empty your own garbage into a trash bin near a house. In our case it was rotting there for four days till we reminded owners to take care of it. Why shall we bother ? We booked for several days and I wanted to leave after a first moment we got in but sadly it was hard to get another place.
Second, no aircon and it’s at additional price . Shocker- given a price as mentioned above.
Third, no breakfast included , they have a basic one at a strange price.
Fourth, not friendly people who seem to be determined to squeeze every last dollar out of you.
Fifth, toilet was broken .
Sixth, water was mahogany color.
Seventh, they were supposed to change towers after three days , but that never happened.
Last but not least , location is far away from everything and not for families, for instance it’s hard to travel anywhere and car (grab) takes forever to order and arrive.
Dear people, don’t book , especially via Airbnb , we complained but no refund and nobody really cared . So don’t pay in advance. You don’t believe me -book one night first and see for yourself. The worst trip EVER.

Response from Gudrun N, Owner at Sunset Valley Holiday Houses

We are stunned by the contents of your review but pleased that you liked our stunning views and eye-catching sunsets. Apparently you did not read anything about Sunset Valley on the Airbnb booking site and had you done so a lot of your expectations may have been different. 1. Under ‘House rules' on the Airbnb listing it is clearly mentioned that we are NOT a fully serviced hotel but self-contained holiday houses. Our guests are asked to put the house garbage in the big black garbage bin outside the house which we empty every 2 days and, if necessary, every day. Fresh bin liners are provided. You only stayed for 4 days and I personally emptied your garbage bin myself after 2 days. Your statement that we did not empty the garbage bin in 4 days is simply not true. 2. Under ‘Access’ on the Airbnb listing it is again clearly mentioned that air-conditioning is an extra charge of RM 25 per day. Due to the authenticity of our traditional and original Malay houses with an open concept to allow maximum airflow, most of our guests find the ceiling fans provide sufficient airflow and cooling. Less than 30% of our guests ever find a need to use air conditioning. Also because of our environmentally friendly concept we try to encourage our guests to avoid using air-conditioning and most agree without any problem. 3. All of our houses have fully equipped kitchens and our guests usually prepare their own meals. That is the concept of self-contained holiday houses. We do offer a continental breakfast as an extra service for guests who prefer a served breakfast. This again is clearly stated on the Airbnb listing and I fail to understand why RM 19.50 per person is a ‘strange price’. 4. The toilet was NOT broken, but the water was permanently running due to a worn part. When you reported this issue it was fixed within hours on the same day. 5. You did mention the water was sometimes brown, but we could not verify the problem. We have an extremely dry season here in Langkawi at the moment, no rain for over 10 weeks and an acute water shortage. It is most likely that the water shortage and low water pressure caused this water problem, but we have had no other comments about “brown water” from other guests since you left. 6. This again is a false statement and I do not understand why you say this. You stayed for 4 nights and we changed towels after two days. During the first night of your stay your baby “wet” the king size bed, so we changed the bedsheet. 7. Our location is not a secret, so when you book the place you know where we are located on the island. Most of our guests book a rental car and like the fact that they are away from the busy touristy places but relatively close to everything! Yes Grab cars are hard to get in the peak season and my husband went out of his way to call a friendly local taxi driver who looked after your family for four hours for only RM120. After a long discussion with Airbnb who listened to both sides of this story they agreed that they did not see a reason for a refund because your claims are not justified. All of our terms and conditions are clearly mentioned on the Airbnb listing site.

Sunset Valley is a real treat. This beautiful resort in the middle of Langkawi offers everything you are looking for for a peaceful and relaxing stay. The houses are all in the traditional malaysian style, tasteful and very comforting. They are furnished and equipped with everything you need for a short or a long term vacation. We especially enjoyed the huge front porch with a spectacular view on the paddy fields and the sunsets. The garden is beautiful and well maintained with a nice and relaxing swimming pool. It is home to many exotic birds we enjoyed to watch. The hosts Gudrun and David made us feel welcome and at home from the very beginning. A special thanks to Rose who took care of the cleaning and doing laundry and much more. We stayed in beautiful Sunset Valley during the whole lockdown of corona virus and couldn't find a better place. We definitely recommend it.

A wonderful place to stay if you are looking for tranquility in an authentic Malaysian setting.
The resort has friendly and helpful management and is well maintained.
The location is such that you are a short distance from beaches, many restaurants and Langkawi’s main tourist attractions yet you can experience the peaceful view of rice paddies and incredible sunsets.

Our stay at Sunset Valley was perfect for our needs. A beautiful setting, a lovely pool and Gudrun and David are brilliant hosts who could not do enough to help. David even set me up with some local tennis players so I could play tennis a couple of times a week! As we had a car, Sunset is ideally placed to explore the whole island

Hi Nelson So sorry to be so late in replying to your very kind review. We really enjoyed having you here to stay with us and my tennis buddies also loved your company. We have been hit hard by Covid 19 with bookings stalled and many cancellations adding to our grief. It is customers like you who keep us going and we hope we will see you all again just as soon as this horrid pandemic is finally over. Meantime best wishes, stay safe, well and happy! DnG

Langkawi has miles of magnificent beaches so why go to Sunset Valley, surrounded by cows and 30 minutes from the beaches.
Renting a vehicle is essential. Please note, air conditioning is extra.
I paid 10 nights in advance. I wanted to leave the next day but no refund. I lasted 5 nights then gave away the rest, i.e. 5 nights.
The owner did not hesitate to ask me for 8 euros for my incidentals!!! While my gift represents several hundred euros. Finally, I didn't use the swimming pool because it's ridiculously small if there are more than 4 of you.
Think carefully before burying yourself in sunset valley. Plenty of hotels much more suited to Cenang with white beaches for miles.
At sunset valley some bungalows are pretty...

This was the perfect location for our group holiday - we were a mixed group of families and couples and the set up was perfect. Loads of space for the children to wonder round safely; beautiful, warm pool; perfectly equipped BBQ and bar area and comfortable villas with everything you need. You are a only a short drive from the attractions and busier parts of the island. but it felt so good coming back to our sanctuary at the end of the day for sunset swims. We are booking again for Christmas - that should tell you everything! David and Gudrun were brilliant hosts, warm, friendly and relaxed. Home from home. Can't wait to go back.

Incredibly hi-spec with lots of thoughtful details. An excellent choice for a family or friends get together. Very peaceful. Hope to be back soon.

No. However, we did have a Lagoon 500 named Edu-Cat based in Langkawi from 2011 through 2016.
Thank you for your inquiry. We do not appear to have received your booking yet but as Sunset Valley Holiday Houses is only ten to fifteen minutes from the airport we advise our guests to take an Airport taxi for a quick and convenient transfer. (Uber or Grab are both good and cheaper than a taxi).
Upon arrival at Sunset Valley Holiday Houses we can advise you on reputable tours and sightseeing to suit you specific needs. We look forward to welcoming you in September
Greetings from Sunset Valley.
You are more flexible if you rent a car but taxis are also available and affordable. A taxi price to the beaches is between RM 35 and 45 depending to which beach you want to go.
What dates would you like to come to Langkawi?
Best regards, Gudrun
