I ended up staying 2 weeks at this charming guesthouse. I agree with all the positve reviews below, this is a very special place.

But... you NEED your own wheels (or be happy to pay for taxi's whenever you want to go out) cos there is nothing nearby.

The room I stayed in was big enough, The room was cleaned very good every day, it had clean sheets, good aircon and a fan, clean towels every day, very comfortable beds, nice hot shower and wifi in the room. Also drinking water was supplied every day.

The breakfast was exactly what I like, every day a nice hot Malay dish (fried rice, fried noodles, nasi lemak etc, every day 1 dish on rotation and all were delicious) lots of fresh fruit and there is also bread and cereals.

The guesthouse is run by the good hearted husband and wife Effendi and Mas who will go out of their way to help you and make you feel at home.

You can book daytrips here, get your laundry done, all at the cheapest rate I have seen anywhere on the island.

If this guesthouse is also to your liking, that depends of what you want from your temporary home, for me I always look for:
1 Quiet
2 Clean
3 Friendly

The box scores highest marks on all of the above.

However if you want to sleep near the beach, party at your hotel or want to stay at walking distance from shops, restaurants or sights this place might not be so great for you.

The nearest beach (main beach Pantai Cenang) is 10 km away. It is a nice ride so I quite liked it. There are lots of birds to see along the road (saw a big hornbill a few hundred meters away from The Box).

Mas and Effendi will bring you with their car to a place that rents out cars and motorbikes on Cenang and from then on you can explore the island with your own transportation.

This is the end of my review.

Once you have arrived, here are some personal tips that might come in handy.

The Box Chalet is on a strangely U-shaped road. And there is distance wise not much difference if you go left or right to the beach:
Go out of the gate and turn left, it is exactly 4 km on this quiet road till you come to the sign where it says "The Box Chalet 2 km" (maybe they can change this one day). If you go right out from the gate, it is exactly 4.1 km to the same sign. This road is a lot faster because after 1.5 km you get to the main road where traffic goes faster.

The Most beautiful beach is at Tanjung Rhu in the north, it is 24 km away. The main town Kuah is about 14 km away and Pentai Cenang and Pantai Tengah are about 10 and 12 km away.

The Petronas petrol station (near the sign post "The Box Chalet 2 km") has a supermarket which is the nearest place (4.3km away) to buy drinks and biscuits etc.

Most restaurants in Cenang are charging 20 MR or more for dinner and lunch dishes. Restaurant Nasi Kandar Tomato (a few hundred meters north of Underwater World) has good food for less than 10 MR. Also Haji Ramli (opposite Neach Garden, north end of Cenang) has tasty dishes for 8 MR.

If you have time, don't miss the 7 wells waterfall. For the not so fit, see the fall from the bottom, it is a great sight and only 10 minutes to walk there from the parking area, but if you are up to it, go up the 600+ steps to the top where the 7 wells are, it is great for swimming and there is a fun natural slide for the brave at heart.

Only go to the cable car when the weather is good, if sunny, it is a spectacular sight.

Have a pleasant stay in Langkawi!

The Box Chalet was very impressive. Quite honestly, there is nothing much to add here, everything has been already written down and mentioned here on TA. We stayed there for 9 nights and if we could, we would have stayed there even longer. If you decide to book at the Box Chalet you will experience the following things and definitely not regret it:

+ Very friendly, helpful as well as professional staff/owners. This was the first time ever that both owners (Mas and her husband Effendi) would personally introduce themselves and give us a briefing about all relevant stuff with respect to the Box Chalet and Langkawi. After arriving to Langkawi (quite late) Mas gave us a ride to Cenang so that we could have dinner there and to rent a Motorbike. Moreover, she showed us right away where we would find the big, local supermarket to save money for food and drinks, and she told us which restaurants/kitchen stalls provide decent food for a very affordable price. All her recommendations were quite helpful and saved us a lot of time for finding the right budget spot. Mas is quite open-minded and very extrovert. She speaks very good English and she will tell you many interesting as well as practical things about Langkawi if you like. Every conversation with her was a big pleasure and quite interesting and not just ordinary, superficial smalltalk.
+ The rooms are brand new, modern and well equipped. That is, every room is spacious and has a well-working AC, big fan, fridge, hot water, fast Wifi. Moreover, the rooms are cleaned every single day (floor is wiped, new towels, glasses, and new water is provided on a daily basis to). Every time when we returned in the evening it seemed to us as if the room would was already prepared for the next guests. Mas herself is mainly responsible for the maintenance of the rooms. She takes thorough care so that her guests have a perfect stay. She worked for a 5 Star resort on Langkawi for a quite long time. The very positive thing about this is that she applies all her knowledge and skills to her own hotel now. Without a doubt, you are being treated like a 5 Star guest there.

+ Safety. I would like to point out that we were never afraid that our belongings were at risk. Although the rooms are not equipped with safes, we had never ever the feeling that our valuables might get stolen. As mentioned before, it is only Mas (the owner) herself who enters and cleans the rooms and she perfectly understands how to deal with sensitive issue. Nonetheless, she mentioned already that safes and cameras will be installed quite soon.

+ Free breakfast. Every day Mas prepares a local (warm) dish.. Other than that you can have toasts with different jams or with cream cheese. Next to that, you can have fresh fruits such as water melons, bananas, papayas, or mandarins. Instant coffee, water and tea are also provided. In our opinion this was also a big upside of the Box because right after the breakfast we could go to the beaches or explore the island with full stomachs instead of first searching a decent place to have affordable breakfast.

+ If you want, she will also book trips for you and tell you which trips are worth the money. She also makes sure that you pay a fair price.
+ Great sleeping quality. In the Box Chalet we had the best sleep ever in South East Asia. This is probably due to the fact that the Box is not located in close proximity to the urban area of Langkawi and the very comfortable big sized beds.

+ Again, I have to point out the absolutely amazing service, honesty and friendliness of the owners. When we asked Mas whether she could drive us to the airport for a normal Taxi fee, she did not hesitate to help us out. However, when she dropped us off she denied any fees. This was a very friendly gesture in our opinion and only showed that she did not view our stay as one-time transaction, but an opportunity for repeated stays and thus a long-term relationship. Furthermore, when Mas had birthday she went to every single room and shared her fantastic birthday cake with all her guests. As somebody wrote earlier on TA, you definitely feel like part of Mas’ family when you are a guest of the Box Chalet.

From our point of view, this guesthouse was incredible and we would always go back there again if we visited Langkawi again. Moreover, we would always recommend it to any other traveler looking for a budget room with extraordinary quality. The only problem which you may encounter is the fact that the Box is located not right away to the beach. If you take the shortcut (Mas will show/explain to you how to use the shortcut) you will drive approx.. 10 to 15 minutes till you arrive the main beach. So you have to rent a Motorbike. However, Mas is perfectly aware of this weakness and she will make sure that you get a decent bike for a very fair price. Please note though, in our opinion the distance was not a big issue. If you want to explore the island, you will need to rent a motorbike/car anyways unless you are willing to give up flexibility. Furthermore, we were glad that we had the chance to drive all the way from the Box to the other places because all rides were very pleasant as you will pass by beautiful landscape and see the real nature of Langkawi. If you are lucky, you might even see a 2 meter lizard as we did :)

All in all, we would recommend the Box Chalent any time. We stayed at Casa Fina and Zackry's Guesthouse before. Hence, got already a feeling of the accommodation quality on Langkawi and after all we would always prefer the Box Chalet.

My wife and I have just spent three weeks at Box Chalet and have really enjoyed our stay.
It has charm, it has peace, it's clean, secure, comfortable.and good value. Fridge, AC, fan and Wifi are included in the price.

During our time we have come to see just how hard Mas & Fendi work to keep the whole place spotlessly clean and fresh as well as giving lots of advice and practical support to the wide variety of guests who stay here. Believe me they deserve there excellent reputation on TA.

There are a couple of things people need to know before booking, and the most important is that there are no restaurants within walking distance. This means that you will go hungry unless you rent a car (approx 80 MYR a day) or scooter (approx 30 MYR a day). This will obviously impact your budget so bear this in mind. The other thing is that breakfast is not included and costs 7.5 MYR per person. I can certainly recommend the breakfast as good value and as a great way to meet and chat to the other guests.

If you want lots of activity and facilities right on your doorstep, then this is not the place for you. However if you like peace, birdsong, and cosy space then you will love it here. There is even a small track that quickly turns into jungle by the side of the guesthouse and you can go and see the local monkeys and iguanas that live there. Once you have your own transport then Box Chalet is well situated as a central base to explore the island. Our favourite spot is Tanjun Rhu Beach which is about 30min scooter ride away.

Thanks to Mas & Fendi for a lovely stay here.

Amazing place in Langkawi, near to the airport, you'll need a car to get there and in order to move in the island, but it's cheaper than most places in Langkawi and the guest are amazing friendly, they'll do anything to help you, especially hooking you up with some car rental and stuff like that.

The place is nice, not beautiful, but is really ok, shower works really well, air conditioning, very quiet neighbourhood, huge breakfast till late, good beds and clean sheets and rooms, I don't know what could you ask more for this small amount of money.

We stayed here 4 nights during low season (I think for most of those nights we were the only guests!). The couple who run the place are friendly and helped us a lot with booking tours (the sunset tour was a highlight), and car hire, which was a reasonable price. The rooms were large and very clean, not the most comfortable bed in the world but we still slept well (and hard beds seemed to be the norm in many SE Asian countries!). Breakfast was very tasty and plenty of it, though was at a small extra charge, and also the water wasn't replaced daily in the room which we'd gotten used to elsewhere in SE Asia. Wifi worked okay in the room, better where breakfast was served. I wouldn't recommend this place if you don't want to hire your own wheels, as you definitely can't get anywhere otherwise without clocking up an expensive taxi bill, but I would urge any visitors to Langkawi to hire a car/motorbike anyway as its such an easy island to explore (and petrol seems so cheap coming from Europe!).

We loved our stay at the Box Chalet the hosts Effendi and Mas were extremely helpful and informative friendly but not intrusive ,the rooms were spacious and cleaned daily with fresh towels and linen, air con mini fridge and wifi, breakfasts were hearty with fresh fruit cereal toast cheese/jam & eggs and a local dish all for only a pound. We found the location to be central and convenient for touring the island by motorbike. It was lovely driving along the country lanes spotting wildlife and waving to villagers. We felt very at home and relaxed in natural surroundings . A bike costs around £7 a day and petrol is dirt cheap. Mas arranged a boat trip to Koh Lipe in Thailand for us which we enjoyed then we spent a few more days back at The Box Chalet our home from home. We loved our time here. If you enjoy being in the countryside but not too far from civilisation then you'll love this place .We will definitely return if in Langkawi again Thanks Mas and Effendi keep up the good work . My 18 year old daughter and myself stayed here for 6 nights. We enjoyed the location (10 mins drive from the main beach/tourist area) loved the cleanliness in fact spotlessness! Spacious and practical. Family helpful and friendly, we booked some trips through them and the recommendations were excellent. Breakfast excellent esp. the ripe fruit. We hired a car for the week and had a ball exploring the island. If you are looking for a rural retreat and peace and quiet this is your spot :)

We fell in love with Langkawi and also with this place.
Its basic but got everything you need. Spotless clean rooms with ac, fridge
Forget about the overpriced beach'resorts'.
We stayed here in sept 2012. We booked three nights but stayed six!
The owners are warm and good people and help you with anything.

Make sure that you rent a scooter or car (the owners will help you and make sure that you get a discount) so you can explore the island. The roads are in good condition.

A nice place. The rooms were kept spotless. The owners are very helpful and gave good advice. You will need a scooter if you stay here, but then you will need some kind of transport to see the whole island anyway. Breakfast (a cheap extra) is self service apart from the eggs cooked to order and is well worth it. Recommended if you don't want the bright lights of the beach area.

Stayed here for 4 nights and had a blast! If you're looking for an overcrowded place to party the night away with loud neighbours and drunks around, this is not the right place.

But if you are looking for an affordable island holiday filled with tranquility, the opportunity to immerse yourself in your surrondings while making friend with locals (seriously, why come all this way to do things you can do back home?), service and hospitality straight from the heart , and great breakfast, this is heaven!

Kak Mas and her family were great hosts, it was more like a homestay than a guesthouse, would seriously recommend this place! A car or moped would be practical since it's not on the main tourist route but that also keeps its rustic charm in a clean and quiet kampung (village) environment :)
