The restaurants are Asian but in most other respects this is an international hotel, with all that that implies, both good and bad. It's easy - staff speak English, the room looks like you'd expect a hotel room to look and there are no surprises like a quirky loo. On the other hand, once inside you could easily be in London, Sydney, New York or Berlin. But in a city where so much else is unexpected and feels distinctly "other", coming back to something that felt familiar at the end of the day was a comfortable experience. And I can't fault the quality of the service or the standard of the room.

Took two rooms, one with king bed and another with twin beds. Room size is adequate at about 30m2. Bathroom is nice but room itself needs furniture refurbishment.

The air conditioning borders between stuffy room temperature on one end and not so cold and noisy on the other; indications that the system needs servicing. They still maintain the furniture from its early days, scratches and all.

For a 4* hotel, it would not hurt if they could supply 4 pillows instead of 2 in each room.

Location wise, its quite a walking distance to the market (about 500m), the old palace, museums and central mosque near which is the famed White House cafe. Less than 200m from the hotel is Wau Cafe (decent selection with nice ambience) and Restoran Hj Ismail Sumatera for popular local lunch.

On the upside, its beside the wide silt tainted river where one could take a stroll or jog along the bank. There is no ferry or boat rides though, not like in Kuching Sarawak. Not much if view on the other side of the bank.

Booked this hotel bcos of the view, and the property exterior & rooms looked fine in photos. Upon checking in, lobby looks glorious with all SOPs in place.

We were assigned to a spoilt room (Housekeeping & Res team - how did this happen!?) It was creepy & eerie in the corridor and that spoilt room had a doorbell ringing on its own, non-stop! Electricity didn’t work either when we slot the card in.

After calling & waiting for 15 mins, FO team came and brought us to another room. I had asked for an upgrade for the trouble and seeing as the occupancy was low, but she didn’t accommodate.

Unfortunately when we got to the room, it was extremely old and poorly maintained - yellow stains in the bathtub & black stains inside the toilet bowl. Kettle didn’t seem clean inside. Two plug points were not working.

Strangely, no toothbrush & toothpaste (the most important!) were not provided, BUT other amenities like shower gel, shampoo & lotion were. Did they miss it out?

Good points were: Riverview from the room was glorious, F&B were decently good, staff were pleasant & hospitable.

Grand hotel entrance and coffeehouse with a riverview. However, the rooms are dated, old and looks like not refurbished for a long time. The beds, pillows and room carpet are smelly, poor ventilation when the air condition is turned off it gets worse! Towels and beddings are old and badly washed. Poor housekeeping. Dusty and hardly vacuumed.

We were looked after and staff were friendly and helpful. We were walking distance to cafes and restaurants. The pool was great and Kota Bharu was really interesting. Need to get a good taxi driver who can speak English. Would definitely stay there again.

I decided to finish my solo holiday tour of the East Coast of West Malaysia in style in this quite grand hotel. Built in 1997 but apparently renovated in 2014 under a new owner, this hotel offered quite a bit of luxury but for a reasonably good price (being pre-booked back home before i left for my trip, via a Dutch hotel website). The gentleman at the reception desk managed to print out two Air Asia boarding passes for me very quickly and efficiently. Terima Kasih (Thank you very much, Sir!). My room was really spacious with a city view. No complaints whatsoever, as far as i am concerned.

Had my convocation at the hotel, the hotel lobby is overall grand but a bit hot and stuffy maybe due to the amount of graduates and family members that waiting in the lobby. The swimming pool is clean.

2nd time staying here. First stay was ok. 2nd time, the wc (toilet bowl) is slimy and dirty. Had to purchase clorox to pour down the wc. How can you the houskeeping not notice? The shower was had moss here and there. You charge almost rm300 and all the fancy decor, but fail to keep cleanliness. So disappointing. People are not going to sleep in the lobby, but sleep in the rooms.

Btw i left the clorox bottle in case the hotel needs to clean the other bathroom. A piece of advice, please supply clorox and clorox spray to your housekeeping team. With these 2 you do not need to 'scrub' the toilet bowls.

Unstable wifi connection.

Flat pillow.

Dripping taps.

From check-in to check-out, I did not come across a single non-smiling staff - which is quite impressive in its own right.
English is widely spoken here and they seem to understand the needs of a business traveller. Firdaus from the Reception is particularly helpful when I requested a late check-out.
There is a roadside eatery to the left of the hotel if you would like to sample the local food. Again, 10/10 for the fantastic service there - food served an infectious smile. :D
