The Perhentian islands although beautiful is one of those places that your money doesn’t stretch as far. Ewans was average at best, it looked like the bathroom hadn’t been cleaned in weeks, it was extremely hot (almost unbearable during the day) and the pillows were awful. That being said for the money for what you get on the island it’s not a bad choice still for budget backpackers as it’s still a private space. The location is good - two minutes walk from Coral Bay and about ten to long beach. Ewans restaurant was our go to for food as it was cheap, portions & selection were good as was the food. Although we read the wifi was reliable we couldn’t connect all four days.

If you're in Kota Bharu then stay here! These guys speak great English and run a cosy little home from home in Kota Bharu alongside a lively young family, who you sure to also meet and enjoy ☺ It's a safe place to base yourself for the Perenthians, and Ewan has expert knowledge and can also provide onsite guidance if you need it. If you're really lucky like us then you might persuade the lady of the house to let you sample her amazing Malay cookery talents and ?many global experiences, noting that Ewan also makes a pretty good chef 😉 It's small and simple but great value for money. Don't expect a marble palace, but it's clean, nice, homely and welcoming and there's air con in some rooms if needed. Ewan has tickets for everything, knows all the places and people you could ever need to know and is an instant friend and super host to all those who visit. Highly recommended ☺ Lastly for any of us westerners seeking our usual holiday beer in a Muslim state... Ewan can point you in the right direction to get one, noting that he might ask you to drink it in the courtyard but sure we can all live with that 😉

We spent two nights here after a long trip from Thailand on the train. The accomodation is very basic but the bed in our room was very comfy. The family are very friendly, the water is free and they offered us some little snacks. Ewan went and bought us some toilet paper to take to the Perhentian Islands, gave us a lift to the bus station because it was raining and finally got us a discount for our boat trip. Talk about going above and beyond! Thanks guys!

We are traveling for four months now and slept in a lot of ho(s)tels but this was not so good so I don't understand where all those fantastic reviews com from. In my opinion there is no "Ewan's Guesthouse 2" which is mentioned in TripAdvisor, it's the same address! We got a family room because the room we booked was taken by someone else (we didn't see). The bed was clean but the air conditioner, bathroom floor and some stuff in the bathroom weren't. I don't mind if I sleep in an old room with old stuff as long as it's all clean. They also can't keep their sons under control, one off them hit me several times and another one jumped on my girlfriends foot. The woman who owned the place is lovely but we won't recommend this place to anyone else.
