A quirky little hotel full of fabulous art work throughout. Interesting place to stay and a good location.
We booked the patio room with balcony. Small room but pleasant. Lacks sound proofing between rooms. Generally quiet though.

The location of the place is good, and the first impression at the reception is also good but the room was not that much. The bed was on the floor and the room was dark. Cockroaches in the bathroom. They didn't include breakfast in the booking and it was expensive in their lounge.

Arriving at the hotel you're struck by the wonderful bespoke wooden details - everywhere. As we were told, the theme is 'timber', and the imaginative minds behind the rework of this building in Ipoh's old town have explored this to magnificent effect. On the surface it's the highest class of boutique hotel, no doubt about it.

After staying a night you do wonder whether the hotel guests are more important, or the young, beautiful and hip locals who throng in the cafe downstairs. Breakfast starts at 9.30am, and if you've got a 4 year old in tow like us, then you know that's a painfully long wait, if even possible. Orders from the limited menu of filled croissants and sandwiches arrived slowly one at a time.

It was about this time our patience lessened and we became increasingly aware of the staff attitudes - a mix of slack, surly, bored and disinterested. Language differences aside, when you have to interrupt the waiter from his mobile phone to make an order, then you know there's a problem. Wanting to escape I asked for a map of the city and was given a heritage trail brochure containing half a dozen streets. Happy 8 needs to decide what it is - hipster cafe, guest house, or both?

Sadly the happy 8 has seen better days. It looks like a shell of these photos and many of the reviews are correct.

No exception staff, let yourself in and out, room wasn’t serviced, it’s run down and smelly damp. Bathroom is mouldy, the verhandah’s look like they might fall down.

Rooms are small with no safe or fridge and we ran out of Lou paper.

Hard to be too critical as it was like 100$Aud a night for 3 people.

It’s in a good spot in old town, is probably the best part.

Wow! So beautiful, directly in the center of Ipoh. The manager showed us the day before to some nice places. The wooden decor is breath taking beautiful. Compliments. Clean rooms, feels like home. Thank you

Let me start with the "Good". It's a lovely and charming little boutique hotel with very rustic feel (one of the main reasons why I chose this place). Checking in was a breeze and the staff was friendly. It comes with free breakfast which you can choose from their menu. Definitely not like your typical buffet style kind of breakfast.

There's a small little window in the room which I'm grateful for. Pillows were soft.

It's located in the heart of Old Town, so it's relatively easy to get around without driving.

The "Bad" -- Arriving during a weekend afternoon is not the best time because parking is almost impossible to find. The room I got was located on the second floor and I liked that it stuck to its theme. Upon inspecting further, the bed was rock hard, dusty wooden walls, a leaking bidet and very, very thin walls. I could literally hear the neighbours talking, flushing (the toilet), and walking around the room.

For the price I paid, I do not recommend anyone to stay here. But if you like to experience a one-off stay in an artsy and woody place, feel free to do so.

I slept well, had an interesting bathroom, tiny balcony looking over creepers on the next (abandoned) building. The breakfast (complimentary, as I booked directly) was not really ideal, so I only had it once. Peter, who was on evenings while I was there, was exceptionally helpful - suggesting places to eat and drink, and finding a lovely driver to take me up to the Cameron Highlands. My room was not cleaned in 4 days which was odd - but I guess most people only stay a weekend?

Told to find my own parking space when asked about parking- didn’t explain parking ticket procedure even though it says it has parking available on line.
Charged an additional service charge and additional tax plus 10rm non Malaysian room fee. So a booking of 280 suddenly becomes 335rm.
We booked 2 double patio rooms- room with a view. Mine ended up a twin with a door opening onto rusty barbed wire. See photo attached.
Guy on reception very unhelpful bordering on rude when challenged about the additional cost.
Beautifully decorated but staff unpleasant.
Having stayed at the hotel previously and recommending it to friends- I will no longer recommend it to anyone.
Very disappointing.)

The hotel looks really good, the building and the furniture is beautiful.
But the room is loud, you can here all the words from the other rooms and the Cafe. If you want to sleep longer than 8 in the morning you got a problem.
The breakfast is really good but it begins at 9.30 til 11.30, quite late if you plan to go out for a daytrip. The coffee is fantastic and the dishes to.
We were planing some trips or our next journey to Kuala Lumpur and the reception was not really helpful so we had to search for our own.
