Very friendly staff, in a quirky little reggae shack style venue. Pallet constructed furniture, very interesting graffiti/poster decor. Straightforward menu, with a mixture of western (bbq chicken & fries etc) and local (nasi goreng range etc)...good portions & very tasty. And a range of non alcoholic drinks. Very reasonably priced, excellent value and a bit different...worth it. I would have happily stayed all evening (after our delicious meal)...but my good lady was being drawn to the night market about 200 m along the road.

I stayed there for 3 days and 2 nights to see Tempatan Fest. The staff were very friendly. The room was comfortable. Food was great. Awesome place to hangout with friends. Near Pasar Karat and centre of the city. Balok People is a cool band, btw! ☺️

I am a little on the fence about Chokodok Reggae House. On one hand, the people here are real friendly and really makes you feel at home. For the price it offers, it's definitely value-for-money. Not exactly in the city center, but just a short 10-minute walk from the bridge which connects it to the old town. And the good thing is that the surrounding area where Chokodok Reggae House is based in does come alive at night, so for those who fancy a little night food hunting and shopping, this is definitely a pro. The room, on the other hand, feels a little stuffy with minimum ventilation. And I'm not exactly a fan of the bathroom cleanliness (or lack thereof). I suppose as a place where you return to just for a quick sleep and leave afterwards, this isn't a bad place, but do adjust your expectation. It's still a budget accommodation after all.

We have not spend a night here because we always stay with friends when we are in Ipoh but we do always come back here for the great food and drinks, chilled overall vibe and very friendly staff. There's live music almost every night and the place seems to attract the nice type of customers to keep the atmosphere very relaxed :)

This place called me in. Music is great. A great way to chill out at night in Ipoh drinking some fruit juices (no alcohol available there) and watching the beautiful architecture of the city. The owner is an interesting fellow: Thank you for everything.

Note: This review is not about the backpackers accommodation but only the shisha cafe. I'm a shisha lover and every time I go to Ipoh I will be hunting for a shisha place (there are almost none in Ipoh). Was driving around the city with my wife when we stumbled upon this place (purely accidental). I have to say that this is an awesome shisha place. Extremely friendly staff, nice decor and plenty of things to see and learn from their walls too. Atmosphere is great with people from all ethnicities, a rare sight where you see Malays, Chinese, Indians and many other foreigners sitting at the same place smoking shisha, sipping drinks and socialising. A highly recommended place to "lepak".

Chokodont The room.... it was 2m x 2m and comsisted of a double bed, a fan, a window and a bin. The bed had similair comfort levels to a mausoleum and after closer inspection appeared to be made of pallets and hope. As it turns out this didnt really have much impact upon my nights sleep, due to the continuous thundering of traffic bellowing in from the none existent window pane. Combined with the bed of shattered dreams, relentless traffic and bombardment of street lighting opposite meant that sleep was next to none. I decided to try calm myself with a cleansing shower. Overlooking the pipe hanging from the ceiling (which was masquerading as a shower and provided as much power as a dribbling pensioner during an afternoon nap), it was here i found Gargantamoth. If anyone remebers the japaneese film in which the giant moth reeks havoc upon Tokyo..this is essentially the same plotline which resulted in me running buttnaked back to the bed of shattered dreams. It was here i remained untill it was time to leave. The staff however are amazing, kind hearted and incredibly helpful.

Where do I start? My Boyfriend and I were initially only staying one night in Ipoh. But we loved it so much, we ended up staying a total of 30 days... We just couldn't stay away. The Chokodok crew are all very kind and welcoming. They treated us like family. They showed us around, and took us to all the great/cheap places to eat. If we needed help with anything (directions, bus schedule, something to do), they gladly helped. They really made us feel at home. We loved the relaxed atmosphere and good vibes! They have both dorm and private rooms. The private rooms are small and basic, but cozy. Shared bathroom. Cost is cheap. The Reggae Bar serves food and drinks (no alcohol). Western/Malay food that is modestly priced. The owner, his brother and their friends have a small stage and jam almost every night, playing music and having a laugh. We will definitely come back one day.
