The design of Container Hotel Ipoh is inspired by the golden era of Ipoh, known historically for tin-mining activities in the 1920s to 1930s. The design draws the inspiration from industrial retro style, transforming the heritage building into compact modernised capsules by infusing smart design in the use of space, and functional elements to create a unique lodging experience for the adventurers as they explore the charm of the city. To foster the arts in the community, we transformed the interior into a creative space for aspiring artists to display and share their works of art. For that, we strive to make your stay an artful and memorable experience imbued with Ipoh modern and classic charm; a dose of cultural fusion which feeds the travel bugs’ curiosity.

simple, new, clean & affordable.
near to a lot of food.
this is my experience in a capsule hotel and I was a little worried bout the space. However, I was pleasantly surprised that it is not as small as I thought it will be.

A very well managed place. The mixed pod is very suitable for families with small kids. My kids enjoy the stay not only due to its bunk beds but they also enjoy to come down via a slide to the reception. The hotel is very well located with concubine lane just behind it. In additional, it is also in the vicinity of the Ipoh heritage trail where mural arts can be found on the wall as well. Truly value for money as well as well located.

Don't let the name fool you, this is a hostel in disguise.

PROS
- let me just get it out of the way. There is a slide inside of the building. It only takes you down one floor but it was fun!
- location: seriously right in the heart of Ipoh Old Town. All the heritage buildings and mural art are walking distance away, some right infront or around the corner of the hostel. The popular Concubine Lane is a few meters away too
- linen and towels are included (the towel came in a canvas bag with a free water bottle inside. The bag can be kept by the guest, which I thought was very cool)
- basic essentials were included in the shared bathroom (body soap, 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner, and hand soap)
- my pod/capsule: had a universal plug socket right beside me as well as a light and a built in hiden wooden desk in the wall. You are given your own locker that is surprisingly large for how it looks and you also get a shoe locker. In the book there is also a ventilation system that circulates the air throughout
- air-conditioning in the dorm room and the main areas of the hotel. In my pod I was sharing it with 29 other people so dictating the temperature was impossible. With that said, I was freezing the whole time. Thankfully the duvet was super cozy
- bathroom facilities: there were four individual bathrooms in one common bathroom. Each had a toilet and shower with a double head = amazing. So I had my own privacy and it didn't feel like I was showering with the person beside me. In each bathroom, shampoo and body wash are available for people to use (dispensers are on the walls)

CONS:
- the pod/capsule: does not have a lock on it. A pull down shade is the only thing that protects you from any unwanted intruder or noise outside
- speaking of noise: it was noisy. Granted this is not the hostels fault, it was the other travellers in the room who came in at 4 A.M. and talked to one another like no one else was there. Or the traveller who woke up at 7 A.M. and needed to listen to Snoop Dogg's album full blast. There was no "quiet"
- there is no lift so someone with plenty of luggage should be aware of that
- WiFi: there was free WiFi in the hostel but it was slow and cut out very often. Also certain sites were unreachable and with limitations (eg WhatsApp)
- no breakfast or kitchen; however, loads of awesome hawker restaurants literally around the corner

STAFF:
- I wanted to give them a chance, a benefit of the doubt really, but having seen them in action (rather inaction) for three days, I noticed that they did the minimum work required. Any guest's questions were answered with only a few words back and often with no elaboration ... Which promoted more questions to be asked by the guests. Pointing was the method of showing where things were in the building and in town. Not providing important information until asked (WiFi passwords are not given until requested) was also a scene noticed frequently at the front desk. Also, they were always talking to one another behind the reception area, which is fine!; however, when a guest came up to the desk they weren't good at hiding a "how dare they be interrupted" expression. This was witnessed a few times during the three day stay.
My personal experience with the staff: when I extended my stay I was told to come back to do it in the morning. OK no problem. I went in the morning, but then was asked why I didn't do it at night. When I said it was because the person at night told me to do it in the morning, I had eyes rolled at me and a "uh huh, sure" as the answer. I get that some people don't want to do work at the end of their shift or anytime in their shift; however, I feel that as a paying customer, they should be happy to have a bed filled.... the hostel is new afterall (7 months old) and they need as much business now as ever. Also, when I was talking to one representative, they stopped to take a phone call, and didn't even gesture a "sorry" or "I have to take this", they just picked up their phone... I don't think that is very professional to be honest. This "inaction" was only the front line staff, the cleaners were quite lovely and friendly actually

MISC:
- credit cards: accepted here and no service fees are included. This was actually the first place in South East Asia that accepted AMEX
- renting a bike is not possible even though it was on their website and brochures... Not that I wanted to rent one, I'm usually a walker, but I wanted to let you guys know. Again, I'll chalk this up to bring relatively new and that they are still working out a few kinks
- hotel (really a hostel): there is an option to stay in a female only dorm, mixed dorm, or in a pod plus (a nook with a double bed)

Shouldn't be difficult to find if you're on the right street. Bus service to the main bus interchange stops across the road. Located really near the Concubine Lane.

Design of the property is unique, but a little confusing as well. There is however no lift access, one must be mindful if coming with heavy bulky luggage. Storage space under the bed (pod plus) is big and spacious (with lock function). Toilet is unique as well.

Bed was extremely comfortable! But one may not feel as safe while sleeping as it's just a draw down blind. There is power-plug on the side wall.

I was really impressed. The decor was modern and it is well kept and clean. The beds were so comfortable and the toilets were spacious. The toilets are equipped with shower gel, shampoo and hair dryer. They provide bottled water and even a water dispenser to refill. The lockers are spacious and located below the lower bunk bed. There are lots of great cafes within walking distance.

Kids and a family making noise from 5 in the morning. Our group of 5 could not sleep well. Hotel supposedly has a disturbance clause but didn't enforce it. I am really unhappy with this. Supposed to be a place to catch a good sleep but even that wasn't possible.

The toilet maybe a little troublesome for the ladies who stays one floor below the Female bathroom.

Overall, it was a clean and good experience to stay in the dorm.

Location is good for grabbing yummy local cuisines.

yeah, unfortunately, there is no guest parking available. And the Ipoh town council parking officers are quite vigilant in enforcing the fines for those who park and don'y display parking coupons. So do buy parking coupons from nearby shops. (I know bcos i kena fine) A happier possibility is to go to Ipoh by train. In KL? One can easily get the train from KL Sentral, and stop at the beautiful colonial era Ipoh railway station - dubbed the Taj Mahal of Ipoh - then it's a short 10 minute leisurely and scenic walk to the Container Hotel : you'd be passing by the lawns of the World War memorial, the grand colonial town hall, the state mosque, the town clock tower beside the Medan Selera Dato Sagor with its delicious halal hawker food, down the little lane with pretty murals by commissioned graffiti artists - and voila! The Container Hotel is right in front of you. No need for parking, no pening kepala.

One can establish the solat / solah anywhere on the planet actually. Please have a look at these beautiful pics of salat aside from surau and masjid : Just google: muslims praying in amazing places part 2 But if you are the type that can only bring yourself to establish salat in a specific musholla or a surau entirely consecrated within the Container Hotel, I am not sure. There is the huge State Mosque (Masjid Negeri) within a hundred meters of the Container Hotel if you like consecrated places. Admittedly the actual sleeping pod is insufficiently high for a person taller than four feet to stand erect in. The Container Hotel has lots of open spaces and common areas for you establish salat if you so desire. There is even a very large and beautiful rooftop organic farm / garden planted with fragrant herbs and spices (complete with a wooden platform and a concrete courtyard) within the Container Hotel for you to perform salat, if you do not wish to step out of the hotel premises. From the rooftop garden, you can see the entire Ipoh skyline and also the State Mosque. Hope this helps. Peace be upon you.
