Unfortunately I've run into this type of attitude in lower budget hotels, where the staff acts as though they are doing the patron a favor by allowing them to stay at their establishment, having no idea that it is the business that should be meeting the need of its patrons.

I went to the front desk at the Kimberly Hotel to inquire about booking a room for a week. We had been staying at an excellent hotel, with excellent service, but wanted to see what was available in an area closer to where we have been spending most of our time on this vacation. We asked the woman at the front desk what types of rooms or suites the hotel had available, All she did was respond with a list of prices. When we asked if we could see an upper end room, she told us that she was unable to do that. Then we asked if we could see some photos of some rooms and were told to go to the website. When we found a room that looked appealing, we asked which room it was and the rate. She told us she did not know. We asked if there was any way we could get more information and she told us no.

If this is the attitude that of the welcoming staff has, I doubt that a stay at The Kimberly would be anything less than a big headache. If they are unwilling to show you a room before you check in, I would tend to think the rooms are terrible.

Stayed 3-nights during my last visit with my family. The hotel is conveniently located near great local eateries and the Komtar bus terminal. We took bus 401E (fare at RM 2.7 each) from the airport that brought us to the bus terminal. Thereafter, it was a short 5 mins walk to the hotel.

We booked the standard room, which was a little small but manageable. Comes with attached bathroom with towels, complimentary shower gel and shampoo. Do remember to bring your own toothbrush, toothpaste and room slippers as these were not provided. There were no hair dryers in the room; but I read that you can ask for 1 from house-keeping. The staffs are really friendly, including the security guard that came from Nepal.

We did not take the breakfast at the hotel, as there are many great local eateries around. Yong Pin restaurant opposite the hotel serves yummy dim sum in the mornings (from 6am) and evenings. You can also get good local hawker food (Prawn Noodles, Won Ton Noodles, Chee Cheong Fun, Fried Fritters, Curry Mee and of course the local Penang coffee) at many of the mobile stalls/coffee shops around the chowrasta market 5 mins walk away. Penang famous teochew chendol stall is also around the chowrasta market.

The famous Kimberley night market (just 1 min walk away) comes alive starting 6pm. Plenty of good food at a very affordable price. You should absolutely try the famous Kimberley Street duck kuay chap and the desserts.

There are also plenty of shopping malls nearby, Else, you can take the local rapid express bus or hail a Uber to bring you to other local attractions. Oh by the way, I will recommend that you skip the gurney drive hawker center. The food there are sub-standard at tourist prices. I would rather eat in Georgetown.

Overall, it was a great stay at the hotel and I will definitely return.

The Kimberly hotel at the edge of Penang's UNESCO's World Heritage Centre provide easy access to the 21st and the 18th and 19th century worlds.

The room which I had was mostly taken up by the bed and it was a tight squeeze between it and the writing table. What was easily visible was clean, but I had to search for an item that had rolled under the bed and there were the beginnings of dust bunnies.

The breakfasts, which were included in the price of the room, were disappointing. The selection of food was limited and the restaurant was packed. We waited until 9:30 - 9:45 before going for breakfast because there was no place to sit.

The staff, in this sea of people, were noticeably calm and collected. They were polite and efficient, as were those working on the registration counter when large numbers were checking out and attempting to check in. I arrived early and left my bags in the hotel before checking, but they were left in the registration area, rather than a secure room.

The pluses for this hotel are its location, and despite being new, it has kept the essence of historical Penang.

If something is priced cheap it's for a reason. The hotel reception is clean and to a high standard but you don't sleep in the reception area. When we checked in I asked for a quiet room. The walls were all dirty, the bed sheets were very worn, bathroom was dirty with bugs and towels so old that they were ripped. The bedroom floor was dirty and obviously had not seen hot water and detergent in years. We asked for a room change only to be shown the same standard. Basically you get what you pay for low price equals poor hygiene. The hotel rooms are also very noisy so don't expect a restful night. We had booked 4 nights and cut our stay just to leave asap.

Was given harsh attitude when requesting for earlier check in since we reached early. Counter staff would rather attend to paperwork than guest. One of the rooms had dirty bedsheet and the other had no towel. Totally not worth the stay even though location is good.

Hello, Thank you for reaching out. On behalf of the Hotel, please accept our apologies if we didn't manage to provide a good service during your stay. It was most likely that the Hotel was having high occupancy during your check-in, hence we are unable to release the rooms earlier as our housekeeping team have to make sure they clean the rooms up before we allow any new guest to check-in (Most of the guests checked-out between 12 Noon to 1pm and the standard check-in time is 2pm). Once again, we apologize if the experience was not pleasant enough and we will work on the necessary improvements. Cheers,

Stay 3 nights at Raffles Family Suite (on 3rd Floor) at this hotel. Its a a small hotel in an old building but have clean room, bathroom and comfortable bed. Wifi is free but quite unstable.

Our Room can sleep 4 people comfortably and have private balcony that overlook the small road below with lots of eateries including the famous Yong Pin Dim Sum (open until quite late at night). To access bathroom, we must climb 3-steps up stairs, its ok for us but maybe a bit of concern for disable.

Breakfast was served in the hotel restaurant (with nice decoration & ambiance) located outside the main hotel building, mostly Asian food and tastes good, even better than some five stars hotels that we’ve been to. Staffs were friendly and helpful - even help us to book grab car to visit places of interest in Penang.

Location is very central, near food street (forgot the name), Komtar Prangin Mall, Chowrasta Market (cheaper to buy souvenirs here than other places) and many restaurants. Good thing about Penang is that foods are mostly affordable.

In front of Chowrasta Market there is a free shuttle loop bus that pass many tourist places but we did not take it after seeing how crowded it was- apparently both tourist & locals ride the bus as its free. We book grabcar to go between places - price was known in advance/no need to haggle, pay cash, drivers were polite and spoke English. Just need to install the grabcar apps.

Overall, we enjoy the stay at this hotel.

A quite bad experience in this trip because when I was checked in this hotel. The counter staff told me that I need to pay another RM40 for 4 nights stay because there is a tourism tax. How come they didn’t told me when I was booked the hotel room online? I mean they should state in booking reference. The hotel also don’t provide any toothbrushes and don’t have any simple safe box.

A lot of people said that the rooms of this hotel is not really spacious, and it is true.
But what I wanna talking about right now is about internet connection.
Small room is not my concern but bad internet connection is.

I spent 6 days at the cheapest & smallest room (*I guess) of Kimberley Hotel and I didn't have any problem with the wifi at all.
Watching videos on youtube and uploading big size (>10mb) photos were smooth af.

Stayed at Kimberly Standard room for 3 nights 4 days. It is located within walking to The KOMTAR Bus Terminal.
It provides very basic needs like shampoo, shower gel and soap only.
Our room was near to one and only lift. It was annoying as noises coming from
• corridors - guests walking, talking and at times shouting
• prayer noise from nearby mosque before 6am
• music playing from downstairs
• frying wok sounds

The hotel was crowded during our days. Mainly tourist groups from China.
The reception area was pretty small. It got crowded and very noisy specially during the group check-in.

The receptionist does not know the venue of breakfast has been changed. From café located across the receipt area to the hall at level 1.
We waited for 10 mins before they were told by a kitchen helper that breakfast venue had been moved to level 1 due to the group tours.
We got locked out after breakfast!!! The door to level 1 needs staff to access. The access door supposed to be opened with the breakfast sign.
We had to walked out of the hotel and re-enter from the front door.

There are 4 help lines on the telephone, either no response or lines engaged.

While using the towel, balls of hair stuck was on my leg…..
When I opened up the towel to “inspect” there were more short hairs “displaying” on it. It smelled different from the other towel.
We decided to leave more tips for the house keeping. Just to ensure we were provided with clean towels!

I have requested at the reception to extend our check-out time for additional 1 hour. Instead of 3 digits room numbers, I had given him 4 digits.
He was looking at the PC and was typing right away. A while later, he told me it was possible to extend our check-out time.
I realized my mistake of giving the wrong room number the next morning. Another receptionist asked for our card key to extend the expiry time.

Overall, Kimberly is such a disappointment!

Yes I agree. We did not hear street noises however we heard noise made by other guests in the corridor. There were family groups with little kids taking up a couple of rooms so it was noisy when they were coming and going. It wasn't continuous noise though so it didn't bother us.
