Relatively quiet stay right in the heart of the historical & cultural district of Georgetown, Penang. We were only a minute's walk from the food-galore of Kimberley Street, and on the other side, a 5 minute walk from Prangin Mall and Komtar. Got woken up every morning at 5.55am with the morning call to prayer (there's a mosque diagonally across) but other than that, it was a good stay. Bed was comfortable, the toilet drainage, alas, was not very well done because the entire toilet would be flooded after a shower. Room is a little tight, but still manageable.

Simple basic room. I booked the standard queen which was a good size for 1 person but can be cramped if sharing the room with another person.

The bed sheets looked dirty with stains. Bring own toiletries, toothpaste and toothbrush for a more comfortable stay.

There's no bottled water in the room but there is a 24 hour mini mart less than 10 mins away on Kimberly street.

There was a bit of back and forth over late checkout but the manager was able to give late checkout despite high occupancy rate.

Very good location right smack in the middle of the malls and Kimberly street where there are quite a few good tasty food options.

The hotel is OK with price of USD 25 per night. Room is very small but good enough to stay. Staff is friendly and nice. There is a near local night market with good food and cheap price. From the hotel, if you want to go to the blue mansion, you can book grab with cost around 5 ringit or you can walk. Grab is very cheap in penang.

My first stay at The Kimberley Hotel was in Oct 2018 and my second in late January for five nights. There's little to fault the hotel, in my view, but as all things, can be improved (even us as people). The hotel is very well located and as a heritage-listed building it has splendour all its own. And of course it can be better if the owners invest their wealth into the hotel and upgrade everything, including pay higher wages and salaries to all its staff. Some rooms may be small but what do you want - a palatial suite? I've always been happy with the rooms appointed to me. They're clean throughout and comfortable enough. Mr. Kanan was the gentleman who looked after my room and did such a splendid job every day cleaning it that it made staying in my room a pleasure. Mr. Bala, manager, and his wonderful staff (including one who happily chirps away to music at the Reception desk) happily moved me to another room when the one I was in originally ran into a slight plumbing problem. That's the point: like Mr. Kanan, every staff member goes out of his or her way to ensure guests have a very good and secure stay. I thank, too, Pushkar and Bimal, the two security chaps who became my friends. They're ever so friendly and helpful always. I wouldn't stay anywhere else but at The Kimberley because it is THE hotel and with its excellent staff, you can't but be pleased, as I was. Thank you to all The Kimberley staff - each and every one of you. And I wish you well for the future.

Located in the heart of Georgetown. Walking distance to great local food. In fact, one of the best dim sum restaurants - Yong Pin Restaurant - is a few doors away. ( So say my Penang friends.) Great for a local breakfast. Don't take the transport from the taxi stand at the airport. They wanted to charge RM 44 but we paid Grab RM 22. Well appointed hotel with clean rooms and good wifi. Cost us S$50 a night for a room with a window. Travelling mid-week may have helped. The staff are friendly and eager to help. Just ask them for meal suggestions and they will guide you. Oh, by the way, it cost RM5-7 for Grab to run you around Georgetown.

I have stayed 9 nights and I was never given the slightest attention. I was also refused a courtesy upgrade although the hotel was at low occupancy. The std room doesn't even have a fridge and the old model tv doesn't read movies on USB.
Pillows and mattress are the worse I've had in my life
Bad experience overall

Hello Mr ECV, We are still very confused =( You first came to our Hotel saying you are planning for a long-stay, we showed you all the room types and offered you discounted rates for long-stay. You told us you preferred the bigger suite room, but you went to book a smaller standard room online at a more expensive rate than what we offered to you. Then you told us you made a silly mistake for booking at a higher rate and you came to us asking for a free upgrade. We still haven't figured out why would you behave in that way despite you told us that you are a very experienced Hotelier, GM and Owner of another property. Someone with a high virtue like yourself is upset about booking for a standard room and not getting free upgrade to a suite room is something we can't understand. Appreciate if you can enlighten us someday. Thanks =)

We had the opportunity to stay in George Town for two weeks (our of a four week stay in Penang). A native of Penang suggested the Kimberley Hotel and I accepted the 'challenge'. Let me start by praising the front desk team, especially the one and only Jeeveetah. More than helpful, professional, friendly - she, and the rest of the team, made us feel so very welcome.

I had read many of the TripAdvisor reviews about this hotel prior to booking and decided to 'upgrade' to the Oriental Suite since we were going to be there for so many nights. (I will say that their photographer could make a rhino look like a magazine model...) That said, the room was not overly large, but was adequate. Clean linens. Firm bed. Only thing I found missing - drawers to put clothes in (since I wanted to completely unpack my suitcase. I also needed to ask for many more hangers, but they were quick to fulfill my request.

One 'slight negative' to be aware of - The shower area of the bathroom is now blocked off in any way, so, even with towels, the room usually floods when you shower. Messy, but not insurmountable.

We took the included breakfast - which is served in the restaurant next door. During the week - choice of 'American Breakfast' (very adequate and well presented) or 'Nasi Lamek - local breakfast' (which my husband enjoyed each day). On the weekend, they had a mini buffet with mostly the same foods, but you could take what you wished. Service was excellent and again, they made us feel so welcomed every day.

The location of this hotel is FANTASTIC. It's in the middle of the city and you can walk or use Grab to get rides (I'm an old fart, so this was a new experience for us and saved many steps even for short trips at VERY low rates). Across the street from the hotel is THE BEST dim sum restaurant - Yong Pin is a must go to. They're open 6 AM - 12 noon and then again 7 PM to midnight. Again, they made us feel so comfortable and welcomed! Just down the street one way is Kimberley Road - lots of food stalls especially in the evenings. The other direction is the Prangin Mall - has just about anything you might need or want - pharmacy, food, all kinds of other shopping.

Though not open a huge amount of hours - there's also a convenience store right next to the hotel with the nicest women who work there. They went out of their way to befriend us and we will also be thankful for their kindness.

All in all, if I were to stay in George Town again, I would choose the Kimberley Hotel.

P.S. If you need a local SIM card or more for a cell phone while visiting Penang, there's a cell phone carrier store on the corner near the hotel. They were even able to sell me a used phone that I could put a local SIM into (mine from home wouldn't accept their SIM even though it was unlocked before I left home). Very nice and no high pressure. Saved so much money on cell service using this method.

The hotel is well maintain, clean and beautiful. It's located at the center of tourist spot, everything like famous penang cendol, shopping center, Penang skywalk are within walking distance.
The guard name Puskar is a very polite and helpful man. The front desk staffs also are friendly and helpful.
The only downside of the hotel is the room is small...
Overall it's very satisfying.

We booked 2 rooms at the Kimberley Hotel for 4 of us. Check in went smoothly, but when we got to our allocated rooms, shock horror both our rooms have no windows! We were not informed of this, and we had our rooms changed. These rooms had windows, but one of them had really high steps leading up to the toilet/bathroom which is not recommended for older people. I swapped room with my elderly sister as she was quite upset about climbing up n down the stairs to visit the bathroom. I do feel the two steps could be dangerous because of the height. The bathrooms, well, the shower recess is not separated from the rest of the area and the drain hole is at the wrong end of the shower which means, after you shower the whole bathroom floor will remain wet and slippery. We requested for extra towels to dry the floor after use and my goodness it took quite a while before they got our message. One of the quilt cover had stains at a corner and we informed reception and requested that it be changed, and of course it wasn't when we got back after a whole day out. They do not have housekeeping services after a certain hour and security brought up the towels and quilt cover. Front desk staff gives you an impression that they are very accomodating, but at times I wonder if they are really listening at all or maybe they don't quite understand but didnt want to ask for a clearer explanation.
As for breakfast, it is not worth the M$18pp, choices are very minimal. It was so unsatisfying that we bought food from the outside stall.
However, all is not bad, one of the security guard by the name of Puskar. He always gives you a great smile and genuine greetings and is only too happy to help with your packages or parking(parking is also minimal and very tight)

Hi there, Thank you for your feedback. All the hotel rooms are non-smoking, hence there are no windows available in some of the rooms =( We are sorry if the request weren't communicated properly to our housekeeping team, it could due to the high occupancy we had on that day. We promise to work on the improvement, looking forward to your next visit =). *PS, will let Puskar you are happy with him.

Yes I agree. We did not hear street noises however we heard noise made by other guests in the corridor. There were family groups with little kids taking up a couple of rooms so it was noisy when they were coming and going. It wasn't continuous noise though so it didn't bother us.
