I stayed one night in this hotel as it was only a business trip.

Server breakfast and dinner. Was good - keep doing this.

I not like any bad reviews at all, but advise the hotel to clean everything.

In the bathroom there was still hair from guests before... Somehow in general a big clean up would make this hotel a great hotel.

I love to stay here a next time.

We are long term travelers with basic needs - general level of cleanliness and enough space for our (minimal) stuff. We had an extra bed which provided enough room to hold our stuff. Although the room was not outright filthy, it had stains and major wear and tear.

The people were not friendly or welcoming. We felt like a burden. They said they had wifi, but it was just the free wifi for all of Penang. The location is fine enough, but you can find better rooms for this price in the area. This place is probably where the minibuses drop you off, and if you're tired you might as well just crash here for a night then find something better the next day.

The room was clean enough, but the Air con was not working very well and the receptionist was extremely rude to us or not hospitable enough.

I would definitely not recommend travellers to stay at this hotel despite the great location as there are still a lot of great hotels in the surroundings which may offer better accommodation with great service as well as reasonable price.

I visited the Banana Boutique Hotel for the first time two months ago on a "border run" to Penang from Thailand. I found the staff gruff to the point of rude, but I realized they were very busy and under a lot of pressure. The room I was assigned to after a 3-hour wait (not their fault, as they have to check out guests, clean the rooms, and check in new guests within a super-short period of time) was really lovely-- the stained glass shower, the clean room with crisp fresh linens-- it was quite worth the wait.

This time, I booked the same tour knowing what to expect (or so I thought) and greatly looked forward to a relaxing stay once I had paid the "price" of the 12-hour mini-van ride and 3-hour outdoor lobby wait. Instead, after the requisite waiting period, I was told that I was to be moved to "another hotel."

The hotel they moved me to (without consulting me) was massively below the standard (in terms of aesthetics, quality of the rooms, maintenance, cleanliness, etc., etc., etc.) of the Banana Boutique Hotel (BBH). It was, in fact, decrepit. In addition, the move required that I be picked up both in the evening and in the morning to be brought to the Banana Boutique Hotel for the included meals. Not very relaxing.

When I called the BBH to express my dissatisfaction, the woman who answered simply hung up on me. I then went to the BBH and asked to talk to the manager. In short, the manager, a male, did not want to hear it. He yelled profanity in my face and then told me, "I will take your passport!" while standing about one inch from my face. He was VERY physically threatening (he raised his hand in a fist as though he were about to hit me, which maybe he was) and completely out of control.

In the end, I had no choice but to get my passport and visa paperwork back (the BBH staff "partner" with Thai tour bus companies in processing the visa paperwork of a great number of its guests). I then spent an extra four days in Penang sorting it out myself and paying much more than I had anticipated. It was worth every penny not to have to endure another moment of the BBH's "service".

Some will say, "Why didn't you just keep quiet and get your visa?" Because that is how they keep getting away with doing this kind of stuff-- the whole situation was quite simply totally unacceptable-- from rudely moving guests without consulting them as if they were cattle, to "downgrading" guests who have already paid for the BBH to near-slum conditions, to hanging up on a guest who voices legitimate objection to such treatment, to the above described aggression and (I am pretty sure illegal) threats.

To the staff and management of the BBH: your guests are not numbers; they are not ringgits or baht. They are human beings who have entrusted themselves to your care and hospitality. Clearly, you have forgotten this.

To potential guests: I am only one person. It would be easy to write off what I say as purely "subjective" or to assume that I must have done or said something to "deserve" what happened to me. I did not yell. I did not swear. I did not raise my fist in anger. I did not spit venomous words. I simply asked to be treated fairly; to receive what I had paid for and to be shown the respect any guest deserves. For this, I was abused-- there is no other word for it. It may not happen to you-- maybe you will get the room you paid for, perhaps the management will smile at you and make you feel welcome. Maybe they will speak to you with a kind and respectful tone of voice. If you do have a problem, and you express it, perhaps they will listen. Perhaps they will attempt to make the situation better for you. Perhaps. I hope so.

My first impression was that it was clean and a good hotel. 10am I had a friend that lives on the island come over for a brief visit, when he left the hotel at 14:20, i was told that i would have to pay for another room for the night. The staff was cold, rude and arrogant. Stating that they will make me pay, whether he sleeps over or not! They then proceeded with threats, saying that they will speak to my bus driver and not allow me to leave without paying for another room. They openly tried to steal my money!!! I would not recommend this dishonest hotel to anyone!

Recently stay at this hotel and was shocked by the poor cleanliness of the bedroom. As you can see there is dirt hanging down from the fan this was twice as bad when I first entered room but some flew off when fan turned on. Not very good first impression

Overall, Banana Boutique Hotel treats guests like they never expect to see them again. In this case they won't. Read on for the details or save some time and search for another hotel instead. Only gets a star because Tripadvisor requires it.

Mosquitoe infested dank dark room (and that was after paying for an upgrade). Towels old and thin and shower a trickle. Cobwebs and spiderwebs in many places. Really horror show. Room was dark and prison-like. Stephen King came to mind. (I did change rooms for my last night, but it was merely a slight improvement.)

The calls to morning prayer at 5am woke me but I fell back to sleep.

Left the hotel around 9am that first morning, returned around 7pm exhausted after a fun day.

Around 8pm that night there was an outdoor karaoke contest or something that was so loud I literally could not hear the TV in my room. The entire courtyard area was an echo chamber. Ended at Midnight. Unbelieveable after I asked for and paid for an upgrade to a quiet room. Worse yet, they started up at 2pm the next day. I now know the lyrics to "Ni Ai Wo" (你愛我 - You Love Me) and I don't even speak Chinese. Torture. Couldn't have an afternoon rest and had to leave the hotel. I can't emphasize enough what a horrible assault on my senses this constant karaoke level high decible noise was. Now I know why governments use it to wear down prisoners. Dustin Hoffman could have just checked in to my room to prepare for the interogation scene in "Marathon Man". Is it safe? Heck no. "Make it stop!". I feel like I should have been given the oppurtunity to cancel my reservation and move with no penalty etc. but I didn't even get an apology.

The younger bartender out front was plain rude and refused me the bike I'd rented the previous day saying it was "his" personal bike (despite the Banana label on the back as with all rental bikes), It happened to be the newest bike with the highest seat adjustment which suited my arthritic hips. Outta luck there. If I were his manager he'd be in the back away from clients - or unemployed.

Wifi was slow to non-existent in the rooms (nothing in bathroom...).

Check in staff pleasant and perhaps the bright spot in this derilict hotel.

Electricity in the room goes off when you remove the key - all of it. So when you return after being out in the tropical heat all day, the room is hot and muggy - and the fridge has been off so everything in there is also warm.

Breakfast was edible, but just.

Airport transfer: The hotel charged nearly the same price fronthe shuttle bus (MYR45) vs about MYR50 for a taxi. I had asked if it was a direct, non-stop to the aiport and the person said "Yes", so I bought the ticket. It wasn't. But unfortunately I had already paid and was on board when we made the first stop. Unbelievable. The ride was bouncy and the driver kept slamming on the brakes then accelerating. The seats were old and uncomfortable - take a taxi instead! The driver was actually quite polite and helped with everyone's bags etc. Just need a new suspension for the van and some perhaps driving lessons.

I came home exhausted and will never stay there again.

I stayed one night in this so called "boutique" hotel. I was supposed tO stay longer but found it too bad to stay longer. Rooms are very basic are there is nothing tasteful or comfortable. The staff are unpleasant and careless. The anagement when approached is not considerate and seem to be only concern by the ringits or euros from the guests. They also offer bus services to various destination but the same applies, staff in the travel bureau attached are hopeless and arrogant. The hotel is fairly well located in the middle of chulia street, but that s the only advantage of the hotel. Toursists and travellers will find way better venues for their stay in Penang. Very disappointing!
