Just spent six nights here in a private room but with shared bathroom/toilet facilities.
Good sized room at the back of the building, so despite being on a lively street it was still quiet.
The shared facilities were very clean and with hot water!
Breakfast was better than expected, cereal, toast and fruit plus tea & coffee being available all day complimentary.
Would definitely recommend & return again too.

We stayed only for one night. The old house is beautiful, with high cel, and the place is quite clean. We liked it, of course since it’s on Love Lane wouldn’t be realistic to expect silence. Actually the music was alright for us, better then listening to people talking on the phone.
They could do something about the sound as the walls are super thin. We didn’t mind some noise and music, but I know there are people who can’t stand it.

We stayed as a big group in this hostel so ended up booking a 4 bed female only room and some spare rooms in the 12 bed mixed room.
The rooms have no windows so air-con is a must, but it works wonders.
There are only 3 showers for the whole hostel, one in the ground floor and two more upstairs. The ones upstairs are so nice! They're in a sort of attic and you have daylight in them. It's not a massive hostel so they do the job to accommodate for all guests normally except in peak hours. The bathrooms are kept clean and tidy.
They provide you with earplugs in the dorms, which is a good thing as the hostel is located in one of the busiest roads in Little India, with lots of bars, terraces and live music. So try to get a room at the back of the hostel to avoid noise!
Breakfast is included but it's very scarce, being only coffee, tea and bread.
The front desk is really helpful and the location is just perfect. I would definitely stay back here if I'm back.

The receptionist was quiet friendly but the air conditioner didn’t work. Also the bathroom was terrifying dirty and so small that you flood the whole bathroom while showering. It’s fine for one night if you need something cheap.

I actually think being stuck in the eighties is a really good thing for a hostel. The Old Penang Guesthouse reminded me so much of travelling in SE Asia in the eighties it made me feel (relatively) young again. It also gave our children a bit of an idea what travelling was like before internet homogenisation. The rooms were clean, comfortable, dark and cheap. Our double had a good ensuite bathroom; the children had a twin at the front of the hotel and shared our bathroom. We couldn't persuade them to use the common showers - even though they were exactly the same as ours and each had an individual lockable door. At least they managed to use the common toilets in emergency situations.
The rooms were air-conditioned and cool. Windows from the kids' room looked out on the street - but we didn't open them.
Check in was painless and efficient. Staff friendly. No shoes above the ground floor (leave them in the hall). The atmosphere was quiet and friendly. Breakfast is included but we went out for noodles in the street. They booked us a taxi to get back to the airport cheaper than we paid at the official taxi desk at the airport (40 RM).
There's a free internet computer in the front lobby. Our children were able to watch a movie on the TV in the common room.
Altogether I loved this place - no bad points.

We recently stayed here for four during the first three nights we had a double room and my back got bitten by bed bugs. When I spoke to the member of staff on the desk she said you need to speak to my colleague but he wasn't there. We then spent the last night in the dorm room downstairs which smelt like wet dog and cheesy feet! It was foul, there also too many beds in there and no space for your bags to go, as we were the last in there we had to keep our bags in the store room. On this night my boyfriends legs got severely bitten by bed bugs and even now 5 days on his legs are covered in angry red pus filled bites which are extremely itchy. The accommodation may have been cheap but we've since had to spend double the amount on cream, antihistamines and getting our clothes washed. So unless you'd like a lovely reminder of your stay then avoid!!!!

This place is set in a nice old Chinese house, but that's about the only good thing. I don't understand all the good reviews this place has got. It was probably the noisiest place we've ever stayed in Southeast Asia. Really hard to sleep, even in a private room & with ear plugs. The wooden floorboards are really noisy with inconsiderate guests thundering around on them all the time. Walls are thin with little soundproofing. We could hear everything! Most rooms don't have windows, some of the double rooms open onto the internal courtyard, so you get the noise of everybody talking, eating, watching tv etc down there. You can even hear when people are showering and going to the toilet. Only 2 showers and 2 toilets for the whole top floor of least 20-30 guests, so people are constantly waiting. Bad water pressure too. And despite being cleaned a few times each day they were usually pretty dirty. The towels supplied were terrible too. brealfast was very basic, watermelon and white toast + jam. Only one toaster and the staff make you wash up your own breakfast dishes. Not enough tables either. WiFi signal was poor and just didn't work at all most of the time. Decent mattress + pillow, but very dark lighting in our room. Some staff were friendly but I got the impression they were all just a bit too lazy to run this place properly, could have been a bit more helpful. Would not stay here again.

I traveled with my husband and 2 young kids (4-year-old, 8-year-old.) We spent 3 nights therei in a triple room when we stayed in Penang. My kids and I love the place very very very very very much!

In our triple room, there are 1 double bed, one single bed, one towel rack, one small table, 2 lights, and one air-con. That's all! But that's all we need. The room is not small. Even we fully opened one 24-inch lugguge, 2 trunkis, we still have a lot of room to walk, to strech our bodies. It is spacious compared to some budget hotels or guesthouses. The room is not dark, if we rolled up the blind. The bed is old. We can feel the springs in the bed. But we are fine with that.

The room we is not attatched with a shower or a toilet. Therefore, we share the 2 shower rooms, 2 toilets on the first floor with other guests. We have no problem in that. We don't need to wait for long for one. The shower head is moveable, which is easy for a parent to help kids take a shower. The showers, toilets are clean. The floor talks, but it just enriches the house a retro-atmosphere.

The whole building is very old, but is maintained well. The breakfast area is sheltered under a transparent roof, which invites abundant sunshine in the house. There are computer conrner, a TV lounge. We feel just like home here in the TV lounge, the breakfast area. There is also a microwave, a fridge in the kitchen.

In the morning, the guesthouse provides sandwich bread, jam, fruit, tea and coffee in the morning. They also provides laundry service. Only hand out our laundry by 10 o'clock in the morning, and you can get it back by 8 o'clock in the evening. They charge 5 RM per kilogram. Although we fcould find laundry service charging only 4 RM per kilogram, it is convenient for us to have our laundry done in the place where we stay.

The reception is helpful. They are willing to offer information on buses, sight seeing spots.

The location is good too. It is on the down side of Love Lane, which is only one-minute walk from the main street, Chulia Street. In the intersection of Love Lane and Chulia Street, you can find a bus stop and a 7-11. On Chulia Street, you can find other guesthouses, budget hotels, restaurants, money exchangers, convenience stores and so on. Keep walking down one side of Chulia Street, and you can reach Penang Street, another busy street for entertainment, dining. It will take you only 10 minutes. If you keep going up the other side of Chulia Street, you will reach the jetty, the ferry terminal. Well, you can walk to the jetty, but you will need more time and energy.

We have a great time here in the lovely, vintage Penang building. If we have a chance to visit Penang again, we will definitely come back here!
