If your idea of the perfect hotel has top notch decorations and facilities, then forget this one. If you are on a budget and a sound sleeper, love old style buildings, enjoy a bit of faded charm and can forgive the ancient bathroom facilities etc, then this will suit you. Super friendly staff, a sea view from the upper level looking out over the hotel's seafood restaurant (Ocean Green Restaurant) and hot and cold filtered water available on tap. The rooms are about double the size of similar priced ones in Georgetown but you are a long walk from the action of Chulia St and Gurney Plaza (30 mins or so). Khan, the very helpful receptionist, can order Grab cabs for foreign visitors and they are very reasonably priced. If you prefer a really quiet room then you need to look elsewhere - it is noisy here and some of the walls paper thin...

I had the good fortune of joining my friend for one night stay at Paramount. It's a short walk away from the hustle and bustle of Georgetown but by the calm sea.Its a heritage property with old world charm.Has a good dining place in front of the property and two blocks away is the Northam Beach Cafe which offers you all food that Penang has to offer.

Budget hotel, very clean for the price. Troubling the most is the aircon, it's there but not cold at all, just be prepared that you sleep with no aircon in this hotel, there is a big fan on top of you though. Wifi is also limited, not always able to get the signal.

This gorgeous building offers the opportunity to enjoy colonial period charm in one of the most budget-friendly lodgings in George Town. We loved the black and white photographs, the timber floorboards, the high ceilings and the whitewashed facade. But best of all is the glorious sun room with the waters of the strait visible through the windows. On the down side, it would take at least fifteen to twenty minutes to walk to the core of the Old Town. But there are plenty of charming buildings along the way. On the plus side, this is one of few options where you can get your own bathroom for less than RM 70.

The hotel exudes an old world charm that is truly appealing and serene. Staffs are friendly and ready to help. Room comes with simple breakfast of bread and butter (jam) with 3 in 1 coffee / tea. The restaurant adjoining the hotel serves awesome food and prices are reasonable too. One can take a stroll along the beach and you get to see different light at different times of the day. Swimming is not advisable. Room is spacious and comes with 2 double beds. Bathroom is basic : has water heater and towels provided with 2 small bars of soap. Despite the noise generated by 3 naughty kids, there were no complaints on them. Will be staying in this hotel again on my next trip to Penang.

Budget hotel for Backpackers and Bachelors... The hotel is located off Gurney Drive road by the sea and can be difficult to find. Spacious room with old furniture and basic facilities which give homely feel like back in 60/70's. The building itself has its own story to tell and i love the huge living room and the old bungalow itself.

The building itself has its own story to tell and i love the huge living room and the old bungalow itself. However, the management should consider to change the old and worn blanket for better comfort and impression to the hotel guests. It is suitable for those who look for basic and quiet place to stay downtown. Good to stroll along the beach in the evening and see some fisherman in action and enjoy the sunset at the nearby restaurant. However, you will need car/transport to move around if you decided to stay there. Parking can be a problem in the evening while the popular seafood restaurant is open.

Location hard to find. We drive around this area for few times before we managed to locate it. It's a one-way street, so if miss the turning, have to make a big turn, traffic can be heavy during peak hours. Hotel is old. Lots of mosquitoes at night. Room and bathroom got ants. Bed not comfy although room size is spacious. No tv inside room and wifi signal is weak. Very old furnitures. There's a seafood restaurant in front of hotel that operates in evening until late night.

Just wish I could give this a zero! Even the taxi driver laughed when we gave him the address at the airport. Its well past its sell by date and either needs demolishing or having loads of money thrown at it to bring it into the 21st century. The bed had dirty sheets with dog hairs all over it, the blanket looked like the dog slept in it, the floor tiles were loose and dangerous, the bathroom windows (if you can call it a bathroom) had no glass in the window and a load of tissue shoved in the mosquito blind and on and on. We booked 2 nights but didn't even want to spend one night there but arrived too late at night to look for somewhere else. Almost a setting for a horror movie film set- Unbelievably bad!

Friendly staff, affordable at RM81.00 per double room, very big room, no TV, wifi not easy to access..50 m to beach, seafood restaurant just outside the hotel, Ocean Green Restaurant, packed at night, delicious food, prices moderate, recommended for low-budget travellers...like the room, hate the wifi..
