Detailed Reviews
It pains me to write this.
75 Traveller is closed.
Sister hostels on Muntri:
W+O is also closed.
Star is still open.
Some great times at 75, many friends made and the staff were the best.
Sam the owner would always reserve me a room or dorm even although he always insisted no reservations would be made.
Another good hostel bites the dust.

It was basic mosquitos in the dorm rooms so I stayed in a private ac room upstairs it was quiet the ac worked good. There is a fan a desk and a queen size bed. The host don’t seem to want to talk very much and are pretty old and quite agitated Maybe a bad couple days or they don’t like to speak english or have to try idk however the room was good enough for my two days I wouldn’t stay here if you’re trying to meet new people

I have been staying at 75 on and off for many many years. Muntri Street has always been rather noisy at night due to motorcycles, but as of June 2019 someone has been revving a very loud motorcycle every night, sometimes more than once, right outside the lodge from 3 am onwards. It's clear that this person has a grudge with someone or some enterprise in the area. I have always enjoyed the staff at 75, but when I went to inform them of this problem, which is against the law in Malaysia, I was treated like I was a trouble maker, which came as a shock to me. This has tarnished my view on this establishment somewhat and I won't be coming back. I wasn't complaining, just bringing their attention to a problem that would adversly affect business in the long term. However, the staff flat out refused to notify the owner and made me feel like I was the problem.

We stayed at 75 travellers lodge for one night and quickly moved the next day. The room we stayed in was a twin room private bathroom but really it was just a partition wall to make the 'bathroom' and the shower was directly over the toilet so showering (cold) just wasn't appealing, the room itself was extremely damp from having the bathroom in it without having proper walls up to the ceiling..this made also a lot of mould on the ceiling. The room was like a prison cell and for 40 ringit, the young members of staff could barely take their eyes off the computer games they were playing to help us with the wifi (which is very weak) We checked into new banana guest house down the road and got clean sheets friendly service and air con for the same price. I would not recommend this place!

The rooms are still clean as well as the shower area; my last review covered that. This time I stayed in a private room for 1 day on the 2nd floor. A small window (no screen) and face basin is included along with a twin bed, which was somewhat small but acceptable. The room can get hot quickly during the day, mainly due to the lack of ventilation and being on the 2nd floor. 37 ringgit. The bunk room was actually cooler because there were lots of windows and plenty of breeze. It's bearable if you keep the fan on full blast.
The common area has a place for you to hang out your clothes for those of you who wash your own clothes.
It's mostly quiet on Lebuh Muntri vs Lebuh Chulia; a plus for 75 Travellers Lodge, except for the cooking of the restaurant next door not a deal breaker but something to consider as the room windows face the restaurant.
The price has risen up a few RM (beyond just the new room tax). The wifi has gotten a bit worse than last time and the staff seems more and more disinterested in wanting to fix it. I specifically asked them to restart the modem and the guy just ignored me. I think they are great for the bunk rooms, but other than that or an air conditioned room, is it still worth it? I ended up switching to a different hostel. A lot more hostels are now using air condition in the dorms and are pricing at around 22-35 ringgit/night. So privacy in a sweatbox vs less privacy but more comfort.
They should consider changing their wifi password more often....(weekly?)
Perhaps I'm still a bit irritated by the snobby attitude by the attendant about the wifi problem and it spilled into my review. Still a popular location as when I got there the bunks were full on a weekday (and I got there at 13:00ish)

Just been banned for life by 75 Traveller's Lodge for wanting a good night's sleep. Place is very noisy. Had been staying here regularly for over 15 years due mainly to the good relations I had with the staff. However, when a neighbour insisted on revving his motorbike at 3 am every night I had the right to say something. WRONG!

I stayed here two nights, and for 18 riggets you get a dorm which is brilliant. The place is really clean and very nicely finished. The toilets and showers are shared but are fantastic quality and the showers are hot! The staff are friendly and very helpful, they also sell reasonably cheap drinks at reception. There is a nice patio space out back and out the front, it's also in a great location near little India and Chinatown.
The dorm room only has a fan so can get quite hot but the beds a comfy and clean. The wifi has it's ups and downs, but is normally fine and quite fast. There is also private rooms available but I can't comment on them.
The place ironically has a Carlsberg logo out front, because If carlsberg did budget hostels!
I would say id stay again but I really didn't like Penang so will never come back to this island.
If your staying in Georgetown I would highly recommend staying here.

My gf and I stumbled upon this guesthouse whilst looking for a place to stay. Love Lane had to expensive lodging, this was just on the next street. The owners were very friendly and chatty. We paid 50RM for a double room with shared bathroom. These were one of the cleanest we've encountered in Malaysia so far! Our room was basic. Bed, fan, table and even a sink. Which was perfectly fine. Wifi was pretty fast and everything is in walking distance. Definitely worth checking out!
Oh, and Scandinavians: Just down the road there's a bar called Mish Mash. They sell snus for 18.90RM!

We stayed in a double room with unsuite and AC. Our initial reaction was not good- concrete floors, drab walls and unattractive toilet/shower. However the more u look the better it gets. The bed, mattress and sheets were brand new and the whole room was so clean. Ok so the shower is directly over the toilet so we didn't entertain the idea of a shower here, instead we used the immaculate communal shower. The pillows are too big and hard for my liking and a plain cover would have been nicer than the fitted sheet provided. The free WiFi is excellent but only in the reception area. Our room was very quiet so we slept well. If your looking for a very clean, no frills place to stay on the cheap, this is it. We paid just RM48 for our room.

We stayed for only one night in the traveller's lodge. We arrived in Penang during school holiday in Malaysia, which means that the prices for accomodation increase up 50%. This place was affordable for backpackers on a budget (38RM) and spotless. The lady was cleaning all day long. The man at the front desk was very kind and helped us to find our way in Georgetown and also out of Georgetown. You can buy the ferry ticket to Langkawi there, too. They have rooms with AC and fan whereas the AC rooms seem to be relatively expensive compared to the fan ones. Also you can have a room with ensuite bathroom. We had a double with fan and a sink.
