The Good: central location, good safe area, heritage, lovely spacious rooms albeit in need of some TLC, complimentary mini bar, good shower and hot water, pool nice but v small and often no towels. The Not Very Good: please note that for the price this hotel is still a good deal but these are just things to be aware of ahead of your trip. Deteriorating buffet breakfasts, started off ok though not v tasty but barely warm one morning, stone cold today. Dry pastries, uncooked eggs whatever way you ordered them, inattentive staff and though not rude, certainly not friendly/welcoming or interested. The location is nice. It is just walking distance to chulia street and love lane for night life. The rooms and hotel are very comfortable and it is a nice place to relax after a city tour of Georgetown. It has a vintage appeal. The bathroom is clean and nice. They have a small swimming pool, a welcome drink which could be a small glass of wine, a complimentary 10 minute massage. The breakfast is good but it would be better to have more choices. We've stayed here 3 times already and will come here again in the future.

Strength Location: Situated in the centre of Georgetown. Average 5 minutes by GrabCar or 10 minutes walk within hotel radius to many of the popular restaurants and attractions. Areas for improvement Building: Property in need of renovation. Examples are creaking wooden floor and unpleasant paint patches on wall. Not quite expected for the price paid. Room: We were staying at Hutton rooms. Old furnitures are used, I’m not sure if this was intentional but some are in need of repair as there are wood chipping and broken hinges. Suggest to management to review old furnitures to be compliant with Malaysia hotel industry Environmental, Safety and Health standards. Rooms are also not clean; examples are dirts found under bed and tv cupboards.

My family stayed at the Clarke Terrace for 5 nights. It's a wonderful property and beautifully restored. The rooms were spacious and bedding was perfect. The staff was very helpful and personable. Nothing was too difficult. Fantastic location and within walking distance to ask the major attractions in Georgetown.

Hotel in good location & staff are accommodating. However, hotel really in need to improve the AC, lightings quite dim & the heat from lamps are too hot, some furniture are too bulky, while some are chipped & worn out and cleanliness seriously need improved.

We stayed here a few nights - the hotel is beautiful so was our room. We booked a queen bed - we were given two singles - extra $$ to fix the problem. After request to speak with the manager, issue resolved - no extra cost. The air conditioner didn't work - maintenance man attended - fixed. Complimentary wine? Sorry not available. When we did receive our complimentary wine it was about 40ml! An insult. Free afternoon tea - tasteless spring rolls - no thanks. Ice for the room? Sorry, the delivery didn't arrive, we don't have enough. Breakfast at 07:00 the dining room wasn't prepared - one person on duty. He took off never to be seen again - no cook = no cooked breakfast. This all looked very similar to a famous television series. Sorry Penaga - not good enough.

Stayed here for 3 nights on our first visit to Penang. Had a room over looking Hutton Lane. A bit of street noise but nothing untoward and they do supply ear plugs if it is to noisy for light sleepers. Staff are all very professional and obliging and room staff made sure everything was in order every day. Breakfast buffet has a good range of foods for all tastes. Nicely located in old part of Georgetown with an array of eateries nearby. Will definatelty make this a regular stop on trips to penang.

Had a very nice stay at the Penaga Hotel. Staff very friendly. Hotel offered a free heritage walking tour conducted by Mr John Kumaran Selva - excellent tour, very professional and informative. Wonderful insight in to the history of Penang.

It took me along time to choose a hotel in Penang. Boutique hotels were over priced and tried to be too fancy. The other alternatives were modern multi story faceless hotels - ok but with no character and often not in great areas. I finally stumbled upon and decided on the Penaga.. and what a great choice it was. A classy old style hotel with all modern conveniences and with excellent staff and management. Great location just away from the centre but close enough to walk downtown and with excellent bus and taxi links. Good local restaurants nearby. Well we booked a Deluxe King room. The ac was on the blink so they up graded us to the transfer suite. It was very comfy and luxurious. The staff was very friendly and curious. The breakfast was included and very good. If I return to Penang I would stay there again. Great place!
