The opportunity to stay in the Campbell House contributed a lot to my great experience of Penang's Georgetown, one of my favourite places in Asia. The hotel is located at the pedestranised Campbell Street in the very central Chinatown. There are several shops and eating places by the accomodation and all major sights are in walking distance.

Arriving by taxi from the airport I got a very friendly welcome by the receptionist Aileen, who offered me a homemade Nutmeg Juice, that typical drink of Penang, and who showed me on the map, which was handed out, several recommended restaurants and places to visit.

After check-in one has to go up some stairs, but not without taking off one's shoes as in a private house. After all the restored historic building has parquet flooring and plenty of carpets.

The next very positive surprise was the room itself. Spacious and with beautiful traditional furniture and decor. A pleasure for my aesthet's eye. The room had enough storage space, there were tea and coffee making facilities and a fridge with complimentary nutmeg juice inside, with bottled water and milk. The bathroom was well equipped as well.

In the evening somebody arrives to bring some sweet and to prepare the bed. At night I could feel that the bed was very comfortable. If I missed something, it was a writing desk and a chair (there was a sofa though), but apparently some rooms are furnished with it. Being an old house, I could hear through the ceiling people walking around in the room above me. So to avoid this I would book the next time a room on the top floor.

The hotel also offers a small communal room with a library, with an often occupied writing desk and a big terrace. Next to the reception is the Italian restaurant 'Il Bacaro' (an old Venetian name), where as of 8am breakfast is served, which is included in the room rate. First a nicely arranged fruit platter arrives, then there is the choice of several items like French Toast, Pancakes, Eggs any style, Egg Benedict or a Full Monty (2 eggs, 2 beef sausages, souteed mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, toast).

I loved staying at this beautiful boutique hotel. The room was really well furnished with lovely colonial decor and included a coffee machine, fridge, safe and L'Occitane toiletries. The fridge is filled with water, iced tea and a freshly baked treat each day - which I thought was a really nice touch. The roof terrace is also a peaceful place to relax and have a drink after a day exploring the city. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and went above and beyond to help me organize day trips and see the sights of Georgetown. If I come back to Penang, I will definitely be staying here again.

Our stay was perfect and felt like home in Penang. Nardya, Roberto, Hema, and the whole team provided us with warm hospitality in the beautiful Campbell House. We were all pleasantly surprised at the complimentary dessert banana cake and Panna cotta provided in the room minibar, it was nicely done and delicious. The refreshments drink on the arrival was a great touch to ease our tiredness from the long hour's drove. The room was clean, fresh scent, neat, and well-arranged in such an appealing presentation, it is extremely important during the pandemic. We felt safe during our stay. They are using the full size of L’Occitante amenities to reduce plastic waste too. It is a great way to protect Mother Earth.

The Campbell house is located in a strategic location and is easy to access to the main area in Penang. We will come back again.

Beautiful old world hotel, special attention has been taken to ensure you have a pleasant stay.On arrival we were greeted with a homemade fresh lime and nutmeg drink, it was delicious. Smiling happy staff provided maps and offered advice of things to do and places to go in the area and Penang generally. Fantastic location you can walk to Famous places such as Little India, Love Lane and China Town
The fridge in the room had chilled water plus a jug of lime and nutmeg cordial along with fresh milk for tea or coffee. There is a coffee machine in the room so you can make a decent coffee. The bathroom has quality French products. We were very impressed and will definitely return

Fabulous boutique hotel with beautiful rooms, we stayed in one called Malaya. Wonderful welcome, we arrived late and tired after a long journey from Sabah, but nothing was too much trouble. The old house has been beautifully restored, comfortable whilst losing none of its heritage charm. I loved the pulley they used to get our cases up the stairs! Good coffee machine and range of teas in the room, Delicious juice in the fridge and they even put a cake in the fridge each day. The beds and linen were fantastically comfortable and very nice L’Occitane products in the bathroom. Lovely roof terrace where you can chill out. Breakfast was substantial and cooked to order, with delicious fresh fruit. Lucca was very friendly and attentive. Location is just perfect and right in the centre and everything you want to see is within walking distance. The Italian restaurant was very good and made a change from eating Penang’s legendary street food. This is one of the best and friendliest hotels I have ever stayed in, I can’t think of anything negative to say, we had such a good time and were made to feel so welcome by everyone, the girls on the front desk and the owners who took time to chat to us. Thank you so much for a memorable stay in Penang.

Last month, my wife and I, on a 30 day trip through SE Asia, had the pleasure of staying at the Campbell House, George Town (Penang), Malaysia.

We chose this hotel because we wanted to experience something colonial that was in the heart of the city. We were also intrigued that they had an on-site Italian restaurant.

And, we chose a WINNER!

From the minute we made our reservation, the management started communicating with us, inquiring about arrival plans, special needs, etc. And once we arrived, the receptionist provided us with the best orientation we have ever received. Not only explaining everything about the hotel but also detailing everything of interest, in and around, George Town. She even prepared a color-coded map for us based on our stated interests.

The hotel/restaurant’s Director, Lucca (originally from Genoa, Italy) was a wonderful host, with an amazing staff. Every staff member exemplified the word hospitality. In addition, the restaurant has fabulous food and drinks.

The staff arranged a private driver for us (very affordable) for a day and sold us discounted tickets for Penang Hill (no standing in the ticket line)!

We stayed in the Colonial room, which is on the top floor and the end of the hall. Beautiful open beamed room and very quiet. Fresh juice, water and evening pastry provided daily.

Make sure you watch the staff raise your luggage to your floor, using a rope and pulley system!
A touch of how things used to be.

Also worth noting, the owners, Nadya and Roberto, are usually on-site daily.

After our great experience, we would never consider staying anywhere in GT but the Campbell House!

We chose Campbell House for a Penang staycation and are so happy that we did! Living in Penang, we have been fans of the hotel’s restaurant, Il Bacaro, for years, but this was our first time staying in the hotel. It was even better than we expected. Our room was beautifully furnished, with extraordinary and welcome attention to detail of the kind we rarely find in Malaysia. It was quiet, calm, and the bed was luxuriously comfortable. The staff were helpful, friendly, welcoming and responsive when needed but unobtrusive when not. We highly recommend it!

By far the best place to stay in Penang. From the moment we walked in we were greeted with warmth and hospitality. We were given a welcome drink so delicious we could have drank an entire pitcher of them. Since we arrived a great deal earlier than check in, they held our bags for us and even recommended some things to do in the surrounding area to pass the time while they got our room ready. We took their recommendation and were not disappointed! When we arrived back, we were shown to our room. The first things you notice in this hotel is the historic feel. They have done an excellent job making you feel like you’ve stepped back into another time when staying at a hotel was supposed to be a personal experience not just a place to lay your head. We felt right at home. The room had antique furniture, beautiful finishes, and luxury bath products. The hotel has done away with single use plastics so all of the products are full sized, it is a nice touch to an already luxurious experience. The room was spacious with beautiful soft light coming in from the colorful glass window panes. Our room came with coffee, tea, glass bottle of drinking water, and a delicious iced lemon tea…all replaced daily. If you have the opportunity to stay in the Rose Room we highly recommend it. Breakfast at the hotel is an experience unlike any other property we’ve stayed at. It is served down stairs, the restaurant has an atmosphere that makes you feel like you are in a movie. The food is unparalleled in quality and you will not leave hungry, we can assure you of that. From fresh fruit, to home made breads, to main courses that rival some of the best breakfast restaurants we’ve been to. This is by far the best hotel breakfast we have had or will have. In closing, this is a must stay off you are coming to Penang! We can’t wait to come back!

We've been dining at the excellent Il Bacaro Italian restaurant in Campbell House for several years. This year we decided to spend New Years Eve at Il Bacaro, and to stay overnight in order to experience the George Town NYE festivities. I cannot fault any aspect of our stay. Our Reservation for the 'Opium' room was handled seamlessly by Kumar, but all the staff were efficient and very friendly. The room itself is well decorated in a traditional style - think wood and rugs, the bed is super comfortable, and the bathroom well kitted out with shower and bath tub, with Occitane shower gel, shampoo etc. Bath could maybe benefit from some restoration work, but that's a minor point. Air Con and ceiling fan worked well and quietly. A well furnished residents lounge (with library!) on the first floor, and an open air terrace to the rear of the building provide excellent places for a pre-dinner drink. We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay and would recommend Campbell House without hesitation. Finally, the scrambled eggs at breakfast were the best I've eaten in a hotel or restaurant for many years, possibly ever - perfectly cooked, creamy and light, just the way they should be, and a world apart from the usual dry crumbly hotel offerings!

Dear 399RichardP, We really appreciate your review and feedback. Its so nice that residents like yourself choose to take a staycation in Georgetown and really experience the Heritage vibes. We thank you for the support over the years by dining with us at IL Bacaro. We take note of your detailed review, the antique bathtub does indeed need some restoration but unfortunately we cannot find an expert in this field so we may have to make a decision to say goodbye; however most guests just like the picture opportunity it provides. Thank you again, we wish you a very Happy New Year and Birthday and look forward to welcome you back. Warmest Regards Nardya, Roberto and All The Team

Arranged an airport pickup. Daniel the driver was polite. The car was clean and well kept. The air freshener was too strong, it gave me a headache. Provided water too and Respects guest privacy. I don’t like talking on car rides. Daniel was great!

Check-in & Check Out
Was very easy and quick. The owner Nardia was great and very informative. They had a very cool method of taking my luggage up to the room. The highlight of my stay!

The Room:
Stayed in the Opium Room. Well maintained and very clean. They have turned down service too. I was missing room slippers and toothbrushes but their front desk guy, Adnan was nice to provide me with a pair of slippers and a toothbrush upon request.

The Restaurant:
Service was great from the staff. I remember Jay and Adnan. Both were courteous and informative. As recommended my main course and dessert. I was pleased with the recommendations.

Would I recommend the place?
Certainly. It’s suitable for business and leisure visits. Location, service, and f&b are beyond satisfactory.

I recently stayed in the Loft room and had no noise issues (except for loud drumming in the afternoon, but it was a Chinese New Year celebration). Nights were quiet and I was able to sleep. My taxi driver mentioned that getting to the airport in the afternoon (3 or 4) can take a long time. I would check with the reception when you arrive at the hotel. They can book a car for you and will be able to let you know when you should leave factoring in for traffic. Have a great trip. You'll love Campbell House and Penang!

Go to the official taxi counter in the airport, it is to the right as you come out of the baggage claim area. You pay RM45 and they give you the prepaid voucher, go out of the airport and there is a person right there that will tell what taxi to get into. No problem. Enjoy, regards Graeme
