The George, Penang, a five-storey, 92 key boutique hotel, is located in the UNESCO Heritage enclave of George Town. It is built in the style of Georgian era architecture to echo the colonial charm of 18th Century British public buildings which can be found around George Town’s Farquhar and Light Streets. The George draws inspiration from the European Renaissance Revival, which in turn has its roots in ancient Greek and Roman structures. The architectural style includes the aesthetics of symmetry, with many sturdy columns, multiple long glass windows and glass doors which bring in natural sunlight to the interior, grand balconies, higher ceilings and decorative stone vases. The colour of pristine white is predominant in the hotel's exterior, as are all buildings in the Georgian tradition. The hotel name, "The George”, is an allusion to the era Penang was founded, a nod of respect to the then reigning monarch, King George The Third, of the British Empire. Captain Francis Light founded and named George Town after his king in 1786. The hotel has a red Morris Cooper parked outside with the number plate 1786 as a reminder of historical Penang's founding year. The George Penang architectural structure is reminiscent of George Town's British legacy, a unique feature which has won the city a UNESCO World Heritage Site status since 2008.

The George is in a great spot in historic Georgetown and the building itself is fabulous. There are lots of appealing things about the hotel: the rooms and common areas are sparkling clean, new, and well maintained; the bed was very comfortable; and the linens were great. On the less attractive side: the smart TV was far too smart for us mere mortals to figure out so we were unable to watch much of interest (we requested help to adjust and coach us on use of the TV twice, but no staff ever came to help us); the Pearl Suite room we had was a strange arrangement, with the main bed a flight of stairs and the main bathroom and shower in the lower section (weirdly, the housekeeping staff never put any towels in the bathroom on the upper level!). The complimentary breakfast was not bad, but not impressive for a hotel of this level and the staff paid little attention to keeping items replenished. The chef also failed to keep requests in order resulting in confusion and delivery of items to the wrong diners.

Our biggest complaint was about the staff attitudes. The initial check-in was cool and lacking in warmth and welcome. That was bad enough, but when we got to our room, we found that it was set up for only two guests even though we had clearly booked a room for three. When we asked the front desk staff to prepare an additional bed, he said they had no record of our booking for three and that he "would have to check" on it, even after we showed him our booking sheet indicating payment for three. Finally, the room was prepared for the additional person, but in the morning we were confronted with another staff who said we our room included breakfast for only two people! We had to again show our payment receipt clearly indicating payment for three breakfasts! It was a weird experience to have the staff treat us as if we were trying to get away with something rather than being accommodating and cheerfully solving the matter. There seems to be something lacking in the training and management of the staff to have customers treated in this manner. I was frankly surprised that after these episodes, the staff didn't offer us a fruit basket, flowers, or some other token of apology for the confusion and the way we were treated. Most hotels of even average quality would have bent over backwards to apologize but The George didn't even give us a sincere "sorry".

This hotel has the potential to be fabulous, but it needs some serious attention to staff training and customer relations.

I love this hotel so much, the location and design was absolute perfection. It was exactly what I was looking for in Penang which was luxury and comfort but close to all the main sites. The George is my favorite type of luxury hotel in a historical city where it combines the old world elegant design seamlessly blended with the modern amenities of a luxury hotel to create a beautiful property that doesn't compromise on the comforts of today.

The room was very well appointed with lots of space and the bed was so comfortable. The AC works very well and it created a wonderful relaxing retreat from the heat and humidity of Penang.

The location could not be more perfect with everything less than a 10 minute walk in various direction I didn't realize how convenient the location was until I arrived and started walking, it made it so much easier to be able to return to the hotel midday/afternoon to take a break from the heat before going out again. Some of the other luxury hotels I researched were farther away so would make you much more reliant on Grab or much longer walks.

I didn't have the breakfast, since I was in Penang I wanted to try all the food out at the legendary food stalls so I can't comment but the breakfast restaurant looked beautiful.

The front doorman were always so friendly and welcoming when I would arrive and depart, and the staff I would run into the hallways were very warm and welcoming at all times.

It was a perfect stay, I can't wait to return to Penang and stay at the George again I had such a wonderful time and would highly recommend.

Had a wonderful experience in this hotel.
The hotel is newly built thus in good condition, I do hope they can maintain it well as the rain shower is having leaks.
The breakfast is a good choice in view of the extra price I had paid.
The pool is long enough for laps and due to low usage, I was able to swim laps and the steam room and changing room is very clean. Will be good to post a sign to collect the pool towels.

I do hope they can maintain the hotel well so that I can return soon

I rarely writes review of the hotels I visit, but this one deserve an ecception. The hotel has a perfetct location: near enough to the city nightlife to go there in few minutes walking, but far enough to experience quiet and peace during night. The hotel building is beautiful and so is the furnishings; the staff is always present and attentive, but discreet. Indeed one of the best hotel experience I have ever had.

This is a new boutique hotel situated in the middle of town where eateries are well within walking distance. The rooms are bright and generally clean. It has a compact reception area that is manned by 2 desks. It was quietly efficient and that’s important.

I took a Junior Suite on the 3rd floor where the bath gel was missing from the toiletries provided. Other than this minor hiccup, the balcony seemed to have some manner of water ponding after a downpour. The elevator buttons are also poor in contrast and doesn’t make selection an easy task.

I took a dip in the lap pool one morning and found that there were no towels provided. Obviously not many people use the pool here. As for breakfast, you can give it a miss as there are so much options around the hotel. This is assuming you are not in a hurry.

So why the 5 star ratings? Aside from these very minor points mentioned , the room was really great value for the price paid. In short, I would stay here again.

Of course, if they fixed the above issues, I guess I may have to pay more the next time I come over.

Housed in a beautiful white heritage building, The George looks so elegant and grand from the road. It was however a letdown in terms of design, once you step in. Pretty average interior design…it could have been more stylish and elevated. Instead it seemed…perfunctory! The humdrum design extended to the room, with an unfortunate choice of drapes and fabric for the headboard. The colours were not inviting and the patterns were dreary. It could have been stunning! The beds were however comfortable and we had good sleep throughout our 4 nights. Firm mattress and pillows helped. Special mention to the spare pillow tucked in the wardrobe. For once, I didn’t have to order extra pillows. Being recently refurbished, we were surprised there were no C connectors. Instead, it was a USB plug which didn’t fit my iPhone cable. There was also a lack of power points in the room and none that the hairdryer could fit into in the bathroom. Lighting was a bit dim. Especially bothersome was the lift buttons for which the dark lettering in a dimly lit lift made the numbers almost indecipherable.
The bathroom was however good and spacious. I’m especially pleased by the Japanese toilet!
The breakfast spread was ok but quality was average. Coffee was out of a dispenser machine
Special mention for the amazing concierge and doormen - their bright smiles and attentiveness were much appreciated!
Location was good! In conclusion, I rate it 4.

Thank you for your detailed feedback. We’re glad you appreciated our heritage building and the comfort of the beds. It’s clear we have room for improvement in several areas, including interior design, room amenities, and breakfast quality. Your comments about the USB plugs, power points, and lift buttons are especially helpful, and we’ll look into these issues to enhance our guests' experience. We’re pleased to hear you had a good experience with our concierge and doormen, and we’re happy you enjoyed the location and the spacious bathroom. Your feedback is invaluable, and we hope to have the opportunity to address these points and provide a more elevated experience on your next visit.

Location wonderful - opposite a row of shops including a Batik shop and near the market and many eateries and the pharmacy and spa .
Check in was fast . Receptionist one competent , the new one not . He was able to book dinner reservation at Ferringi Garden for us .
Room size was adequate with a queen size bed , comfortable beddings and pillows . Bathroom was great with a toilet and a shower and a huge sink . Amenities were adequate . There was even a weighing machine in one of the drawers . Tea, coffee , milo were provided with also two bottles of mineral water . A fridge and safe were also present . What made the stay great was that all things work perfectly from the strong wifi to cold air con and the charging points beside the bed , adequate lighting , small touches like the weighing scale , extra boxes of tissues etc
Breakfast was about the same each day with an egg station , bread and pastry section , a nadi lemak station , a congee station , western section with sausages , baked beans, a cereal station and even a cook yourself noodle station . The desert station came with cheese , Nonya kueh , salads and also the fruits and yoghurt .
We did not get tired of the food even after three days .
Altogether a most fantastic stay .

Stunning stunning hotel in the heart of Georgetown. I have been to Georgetown many times and stayed at its many heritage accommodation offerings. The George on Penang Road is the newest kid on the blocking having opened its doors in December 2022. Like its siblings in the business the George is a conversion of a heritage building but while the others concentrate of showcasing Penang’s rich cultural heritage , the interiors at the George are minimalist & modern. The hotel exudes a cool, fresh vibe and offers a variety of well-appointed rooms. Other facilities at the George include an onsite restaurant, a bar, a decent sized lap swimming pool with a sauna room. The hotel has a car park equipped the parking cages enabling it to expand capacity if needed.

The George is new and we always find that an advantage. It is a good mid-range hotel with spacious rooms. We arrived early, our rooms were not ready yet, but we were immediately given another, better and very spacious room, actually a suite. Then your stay will immediately start to be pleasant. The room had a kind of loft for sleeping, so you have to be able-bodied. Bathroom well equipped, A/C in the living area and separate A/C in the sleeping area. The breakfast is well prepared and varied and there is a large swimming pool (without sun because it is covered). The location is excellent for exploring the city.

We enjoyed our stay at The George. An impressive building rooms in a good location to explore the town. The rooms are well appointed befitting the star rating. A massage chair in the living room was an added benefit. The balcony provided nice views over the town. The service of staff was warm, friendly and professional. The saltwater pool was a superb place to relax after spending time outside in the heat. Disappointingly, the breakfast was subpar for this category of hotel, could easily be improved with a small few tweaks.
