#22 of 206 Speciality lodging in George Town
Immerse yourself in a unique cultural experience, 'living like a local' in one of George Town's few true homestays, in a family's rustic wooden home on stilts at the Chew Jetty, a unique heritage community nestled on the city's waterfront. Right on the water’s edge of the heritage city of George Town, the Chew Jetty is a unique settlement consisting of 88 rustic wooden family homes linked by a long walkway, starting from the shore and jutting out onto the water. In existence since the 1880s, and one of seven remaining clan jetties, the Chew Jetty is unique in that the residents all share the same Chinese surname. Ours is a wooden house fronting the main walkway, roughly in the middle of the Chew Jetty. You will be staying in 1 of 5 rooms in our family house, out of which only 3 rooms are for homestay guests. You will be getting a cozy DOUBLE ROOM in the middle section of the house, with a small window on its side. The room is air-conditioned, and also has a wall fan, and is furnished with a queen-sized bed. We have a bathroom shared by all in the house, and it comes with instant hot shower and sitting toilet. Our living room, dining hall and our back and side open decks are available for your use.

Stayed here one night because of location . It's like staying in a relative's house except you have to pay. People are nice but the sea breeze was horrible at night . One has to share the bathroom n toilet with the occupants of the house which makes it very difficult . Floor is very basic n place a bit run down but I guess , it's just a side income for them. No twin beds and shared toilet and bathroom not convenient.

Friendly and very welcome by owner (Chew family), located on historical area. And good to know they (Chew jetty) still keep the culture and stay united to protect it. Very clean environment and superb comfortable room. Free coffee/tea and fruit available while enjoying great sea view. In walking distance, you can get very nice local food(breakfast,lunch,dinner/supper)nearby.

We just left My Chew Jetty homestay. It was a highlight of our entire trip. They were so helpful, the rooms comfortable and clean and very central. An amazing and unique place to stay, steeped in history. Could not recommend more highly.

We stayed overnight here and really enjoyed our experience. Accommodation is very basic, plumbing is very basic but the family was exceptional. We were invited to share some durian with them and we really felt like part of the family. It was fantastic to walk around exploring the jetty and getting a feel for what it's really like to live there. SP Chew also provides a nice folder with all the activities around the jetty i.e. food court, eateries, night markets and transport advice etc which is incredibly helpful. If you're looking for a luxury cultural experience, this isn't quite for you. But if you're looking for an unadulterated experience with unpretentious people who will treat you like family so you can immerse yourself in their culture- look no further!

Stay here for 2 nights and what a great experience it was! The room and place is basic but what a great cultural experience! You stay right on one of the historic jetties and really get a feel for the people who live there. The owners were so welcoming and helpful. And another family member lives across the Jetty. It's a great location and easy to walk to everything. I think was the best place to stay in Penang! Highly recommended!
