Staying at Chew Jetty is like staying at your grandma's house! If your grandma lived in the historic jetty area. It's an interesting combination of the very prosaic (elderly aunties and uncles sitting outside their houses), the touristy (amateur photographers coming down the jetties every morning) and the beautiful (the mist over the sea in the morning). It's also somewhere to stay for the experience rather than because it's especially comfortable. I thought the rooms were fine -- they were small but clean and functional (and had air-conditioning); the extra bed you can add for a charge is basically just a mattress on the floor, but I slept perfectly well. The toilet IS just a hole in the ground that leads to the sea, which horrified the friend travelling with me as she was…
This place has very good reviews, which it deserves. One thing to bear in mind is the accommodation really is quite basic. Small rooms, and for me the bathroom situation wasnt very appealing. But if you are ok with that, then it is certainly an alternative option.
If you like waterfront, this is a highly recommended place to stay! It's wonderful to experience living in the jetty settlement. You walk on wooden path bridge in and out of jetty, a first-hand experience of life at the clan jetty. The great view and convenient location are plus. I loved the scene of the bay and mainland across during dusk, it's soothing beautiful. There are food stalls right outside of jetty by main road - very local tasty dishes you'll enjoy there! I stayed in a room with fan, and though without air-con, it was comfortably cool to sleep. The reading room is plus plus, with a balcony looked out to the jetty and waterfront. You can simply relax and sit there to idle or read a book. What a treat! :)
We had a wonderful vacation. Thank you. Beautiful weather, wonderful comfortable homestay, excellent food- everything great. I defo come back next summer.
Forget the backpacker ghetto on Chulia Street! There is a charming and authentic place to stay in George Town: head to My Chew Jetty Homestay to get to know how locals live in a historical waterfront settlement built by Chinese immigrants for more than one hundred years ago. My Chew Jetty Homestay is run by a lovely couple, Mrs. and Mr. Chew, and their friendly daughter Siew Pheng. This place is your home away from home. Jetty area is quiet and atmospheric. It´s a world heritage site too, but not a museum: slow down and enjoy the day sitting on a wooden terrace and watching locals going on with their daily tasks. There are not many places in the world where you can stay in a village built on stilts situated in the middle of the city. Watch fishermen leaving the jetty with…
My fiancé and I stayed with the Chew family for one night at the end of March 2012. Miss Chew was so friendly and helpful, she even went to the bus station at 1030 pm to get us bus tickets to the Cameron Highlands (despite our polite protests). The room was clean and comfortable with air-con while the toilet is shared and of the traditional Malay variety. The jetty community is very picturesque and is ideally located for exploring Georgetown with the bus station just down the road. Our only complaint is that we could not stay longer!
The Chew Jetty itself is a big attraction. Every corner is a picture. The sunrise, sunset, moonlight and ebb glorify the scene. We feel at home in the Homestay. The wooden balcony on the sea is the wonderful place for enjoying the breeze, chatting or staying alone. The Chew family are warmhearted and lovely, providing useful tourist information and local stories. The food stalls and food court outside serve cheap and nice local food. Bak Kut Teh, shrimp noodles and iced coffee are highly recommended. It is convenient to travel the Georgetown starting from the Chew Jetty Homestay. There are buses to go to the centre "Komtar", the beach area "Batu Feringgi" and Penang's landmark "Penang Hill" in the bus stop nearby.
