Not surprised nor shocked. Reception lobby areas right up to our guestroom surroundings looked rather deteriorated woody landscape.
Arranged for wake up call, was not awakened and late for an appointment.
All staff tried their best and shown a guest relationship sincerity to avoid any shortcomings.
Location of the hotel is good and easy access to Gurney nightlife areas.
Overall, really needs to show commitment for improvement to be competitive, again.

A very great, friendly and helpful staff. But the design of interior was a bit old school, but it helps to reminisce my childhood memory. However, really looking forward for their new facelift. Definitely will comeback for their new design.

Love the location very convenience to go all the hotapot and touristy places. The hot tub is amazing, bfast is average, overall was 3.5 over 5. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Potential to bloom with some TLC...
Arrived around 3++ PM.
Check in was fast.

Got the room on 27th floor.
Got the view of the sea.
Room layout and size is good.
No doubt interior is dated.
Good size bath with jacuzzi tub.

Had some electrical issue late night.
They offer room change.
New room is even bigger.
All seems to function.

Tried breakfast in the morning.
Decent choice of spread.
Food were OK.
But saw some tiny roaches around.

Overall this place got potential with some TLC.
As the location is great: easy get around walking or taking Grab.

Knocking sounds, dragging of furnitures and dropping of marble sound can be heard all night. When we complained, the staff didn't look surprised. In fact the room above was empty. Toilet floor was slimy looking, floorboard near bed rotting and bedside control panel buttons have holes in them. Hall lights kept flickering intermittently. Don't bother with breakfast.

I can assure you that our hotel is not haunted as I have a room in the hotel. There has never been a haunted story complaint. I have a Welcome Letter in the room with my hand phone number. You should have contacted me as my phone is reachable 24 hours. I would like to find out more details as this is the first time I received this complaint. My email address is : anthony.ang@northam-hotel.com.my From, GM The Northam All Suite Penang.

Northam Suites was one of the best places to stay during a visit to Penang but it has since deteriorated beyond minimum standards. The rooms were no longer comfortable due to poor maintenance. Among those evident were defected floor boards, stained walls and the lingering smell of dampness. The service also seemed to have suffered. The duty manager was extremely rude when we asked for an extra towel. He simply shook his head and gave us a firm 'N O' instead of having the courtesy to explain the house rules. It is an extremely disappointing stay and 'N O' I will not be back !

I stayed at the Northam for 6 nights while visiting friends and family in Penang. It's worth pointing out that I moved there from its sister hotel The Gurney (a short walk away) after viewing the room. Given the excellent service I received and how nice the room is, I feel almost obliged to write this review. Let me begin with the room itself: I stayed in Room2805 on the 28th floor (lowest floor is 24th), a studio suite that comes with, all the obvious aside, a lounge, a guest cloakroom, wall-to-wall windows which give you a 180-degree sea view, a fax-machine, a bathroom suite equipped with a massive jacuzzy bath tub (easily fits two!), built-in wardrobe, a giant mirror over the a double washbasin and separate WC and shower units. The decor is modern and stylish, which is refreshing for a hotel in Penang (I've stayed in at least 7 different ones over the years).

Amenities at the hotel include a smallish but cosy infinity pool, a gymnasium (if it's not big enough for you gym-bunnies, Fitness Studio across the road charges RM40/£6 for a week pass), spa and massage service (RM90/£15 onwards), a business centre and two restaurants (the adequate buffet breakfast is a steal at RM23/£4 a head).

The staff are very efficient and helpful; The clientele of the hotel consists mainly of business men and young professionals on business trips, which suited me well as opposed to families with kids at other establishments nearby.

The location of the hotel is another big plus. For those of you who fancy a bit of night-life, all the major clubs and pubs are within walking distance or a short cab ride away. There are plenty of restaurants (see below) and cafes (Starbucks and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf) in the neighbourhood too. The lovely Gurney Plaza which houses many nice shops, multi-screen cinema, state-of-the-art karaoke with individual rooms and restaurants are 15 minutes' walk away. You'd even visit one of the largest leaning-Buddha temples in Asia halfway through your journey. There's also a 24-hour private clinic behind the hotel.

The food in Penang should undoubtedly be the highlight for any visitors. I would personally recommend the Kapitan (an Indian cafe) conveniently located next to the Gurney Hotel. You'd find it hard to have a frill-free yet exquisite dinner there for more than RM15/£2.50 a head, including a glass of freshly-squeezed fruit juice! If you're willing to spend a little bit more (here we're talking about RM50/£8 ahead), try Palace of India (off the main road leading to Batu Ferringhi, just before Island Plaza). The food is simply divine and authentic (please don't ask for Chicken Tikka Masala!). There's also a family-run Thai restaurant called Yellow Light (Mt Erskin Road) which serves top-notch Thai cuisine at ridiculously low prices (the 3-course feast plus drinks for 5 cost me a mere RM150/£25). Just ask the concierge for direction! If you're adventurous enough, the hawker food in Penang is not to be missed too (New Lane and Lorong Selamat etc.). Truth be told, these are just the selected few which I managed to pack in this time 'round!

The room I stayed in cost RM207/£35 nett a night (NOT per person!!!). Need I say more? Though, try to ask for the studio suite (cheapest but with biggest windows...) and preferably below the 30th floor (highest floor is 38th). The reason for this is that the central air-conditioning system can get pretty noisy at night on the higher floors (I was on the 36th floor on the first night!). All in all, Northam is a deserved winner! I'll definitely return to my lovely Room2805 in many years to come! Please look after it!

The suite we got was beautiful and spacious and even had a jacuzzi and an amazing views of the ocean. The only issues we had was breakfast (only Asian options with a couple of frozen crossaints, fruit was available but covered in fruit flies, horrible coffee...) and the swimming pool which was really well arranged (and what a view!) but always full of teenagers diving and splashing water, and you had to ask for a pool towel each time. The staff generally helpful and smiley just always looked very busy and not always available to help - not their fault...Would return for the views from the suites but would not take breakfast at the hotel. There were some good cafes in the back behind the hotel parking that kept us alive:)

My friends and I stayed at this hotel in April 2006. It was beautiful and beyond my expectations.

We booked 2 Studio Suites which cost us about RM220 - 250 each, after tax. The rooms were HUGE, clean and new. Loved the view from the room.

The first night though, I got a room on the highest floor and that was quite a terrible experience because the air-conditioning or some essential machinery was just above our floor and it was SO noisy, I couldn't hear my TV or myself at all. But nobody could do anything about it, because it was essential what whatever was making that noise was kept on 24hrs. Which of course, meant that I couldn't sleep that night. On top of that, the air-conditioning in my room wasn't working that well, we felt rather warm the whole night, and the shower pressure was low.

So, we requested for a room change and the next night, things were perfect. Moral of the story = Make sure the room you get is not on the highest floor of the building

In terms of location, I would rate the hotel as average. A short walk away is Hin Heang, the famous local biscuit company, touted to be the best. Across the street you will find a huge eating centre, serving hawker fare like oyster omellete but strangely, also German sausages. Other than these, you need to take a cab to wherever else you wanna get to.

Service-wise, not too bad. I would actually recommend the hotel taxi service because taxis in Penang typically charge RM10 anywhere you wanna get to, which is the same price as the hotel taxi. The added plus is the hotel taxi is much more comfortable, and service at your finger-tips. So, we usually took the hotel taxi. Even for getting to the airport, the rates are comparable to what the airport taxi booth charges, so, again, hotel taxi service is the way to go.

Conclusion: You pay the price for a pretty, spacious and clean room. Recommended for those who wish to travel in comfort.

I have waited a few days to write this so that I can be more objective and less emotional.

I booked the Northam All Suites for 7 days after reading some spectacular reviews as a surprise for my wife. We had just attended our son’s wedding in Bali, and when we flew into KL I surprised her with a trip to Penang instead of continuing on back to Sydney.

Surprise was not the right word. Diprise (disappointing surprise) is more accurate.

I have never said this in any review before but for the first time I will say: DO NOT STAY HERE.

It was very late, and from the moment we stepped from the cab, I knew something was amiss, and the staff’s attitude portrayed it as well. While the doormen were great, the check-in staff had a seemingly uncaring attitude.

When we got to the room, it was furnished with two king singles. I mentioned this to the porter and he contacted reception to have it fixed. The porter informed me that all the beds on that floor were the same. Reception sent up housekeeping to push the beds together and turn them into one oversized king which the sheets did not fit, and housekeeping told me that all the beds in the hotel were like that. The pictures on the website tell a different story.

Being late and a diabetic travelling all day, I needed to get some food so I wandered down to the lobby to see if I could get some fresh milk for coffee (or at least a coffee to take back to the room), and something to eat from the 24hr Cafe in the lobby. I was told that this was impossible as, and I quote, “The kitchen is closed”. Must be a new definition of 24hr!

Heading back to the room, I went to put my insulin in the fridge, but it was so iced up that it was cooler outside the fridge.

Even though we were on the 26th floor, the noise from the street was unbearable, and the windows fogged up on the outside to the extent that you could not see through them. Either the glass if very thin, or the windows did not seal properly.

During the night, the power went off briefly 3 times, and during the early hours of the morning the lights came on by themselves (the switches could also be controlled from the bedside console). Rude awakening!

The toilet in the ensuite was unusable during the night as it made continuous groaning noises for 10 mins while it refilled. The toilet off the entrance refused to flush and then overflowed in the morning.

I needed to escape, and accepting anything else was out of the question.

Zero Stars. In the morning I went down to reception and they did not really seem too surprised that I was leaving. I had breakfast which was included in the price, paid them in cash and left for another motel down the road.

We booked a Junior Suite for 2 nights. On the first night, we stayed on the 25th floor and the whole floor is almost deserted. The room is in a terrible state: old and dirty furniture, mosquitoes infested, old blood stains all over the toilet floor, toilets that auto-flush every 2 minutes throughout the night, broken down kettle and an old TV with very bad TV signals. We could also feel a presence in the corridor and room (i.e. haunted) even though they did not really disturb us. In short, nothing is working right in this room. Needless to say, we requested for a change of room the first thing in the morning!

On the second night, we switched to 26th floor and things improved a great deal. The room is definitely cleaner, brighter and not haunted. The only downside is uncomfortable beds and pillows (on both floors) and I couldn't sleep well at all throughout these 2 nights. We have concluded that we will never return to this hotel again.

Yes, you can change rooms if they have any available, I have seen these comments before but the suites we stayed in where very clean and comfortable. But we did upgrade before hand.
