Detailed Reviews
A bit disappointed as this is our second time stay and this time we stayed for nights but nobody offered to clean our room. Everything is okay except this as I am working also in a hotel, daily cleaning is a must.

This was a great place for myself and my group of friends to stay while travelling in Malaysia. Free wifi and the rooms were air conditioned. The staff were great, and one member of staff even escorted us to a place for breakfast in the morning, and helped us to communicate our order. Would definitely go back!

We were looking for a low cost place to stay and we found this one which is not only cheap but is also very clean, with comfortable bed. The only thing is shared bath room - but at this price, Georgetown will not have anything with attached bathroom (not that we know of), and the toilets and bathrooms were very clean, with hot water too, with shampoo and shower gel provided - what else can you ask for? - ok, towels are not provided, and our room has no window. The rooms are nicely decorated, though more on the minimalist side - there's no wardrobe, side table, etc, but there are enough sockets to charge up your phones and lappies. Another minus is there's not much communal areas, no cafe attached, so not much interaction between travellers - well that makes this place quiet. And we don't really feel there's any need for cafe, as we are in the heart of the best street food capital in the world! Lastly, the owner is very friendly and helpful.

We arrived after two flights just to be told that our Expedia booking was wrong (even though it stated we had a double bed) and we would need to upgrade and pay more. Felt like a scam. Not a good first impression. The walls are paper-thin. You can hear everything going on outside your room. The place was incredibly noisy, with drunk backpackers and other guests coming in and yelling until about 3 in the morning. At 6am, you’ll be awakened by staff yelling at each other or yelling on their phones. There is zero respect or consideration for guests. The first morning, the incessant yelling was followed by interior construction which began around 8. There were four WiFi points and none worked for the first couple of days. The rooms are grimey, in complete disrepair (broken bathroom door, holes in the ceiling), the beds are uncomfortable, and the bathroom was about as clean as one you’d find at a bus station. It may be a budget hotel, but it’s not worth the lack of sleep and comfort. I highly suggest paying a few bucks more to stay anywhere else. Yes, it’s near many attractions, but you won’t be able to enjoy them when you’re getting 3-4 hours of sleep a night. I spend months at a time in Southeast Asia, and I have to say, this is one of the worst places I’ve ever stayed in. Don’t make the same mistake I did, book a room somewhere else.

Room was dirty. Dirty towel, hair and trash was behind my door. Also, hair was on bed and desk. Wall is thin can hear people in other room. Bed sheet was tiny like a baby crib sheet. Room is very small and very dated. I hated the bathroom because male was standing next to female half naked wrapped in only a towel. Suitable for people who dont mind unisex bathroom. Also, everyone paid 1RM per night stay in addition to the full payment at Agoda. Downstairs look dirty and abandoned.

It’s shallow to choose a room on the basis of literature (Malabar in Mumbai features in the Moor’s Last Sigh by Salman Rushdie) but I did.
Excellent location, friendly welcome, luggage storage, cheap windowless room, clean, shower gel, aircon.
But a toddler in the next room was playing cheerfully till midnight and again at 4am, making me aware of how paper-thin the walls are.

Malabar was an excellent choice for my week long trip in Penang! The staff was very helpful and always willing to give help and suggestions. The room wasn't fancy, but if you just desire comfort and clean, it is indeed the place. I chose the single room with the personal bathroom. I'm not for the frills, that's what the city and activities are for. Overall, everything was great and I would consider staying here again. Note there is no elevator and steep stairs so keep that in mind if you have heavy luggage or a lot of luggage.

I enjoyed my stay at the this hotel. It was in the middle of the old quarter, but very quiet and clean and comfortable. Staff are very friendly and supportive. For the price, it was exactly what I was looking for.

We stayed there 4 nights in a double room.
Pros :
Room size good
Good location -close to bars, cafés, restaurants, street food...
Cold and hot water, tea
Nice staff
Cons :
Bathroom not practical and could be cleaner but ok
Don't bring food in the rooms as there can be ants
Walls really thin so a noisy neighbor can lead to a bad night
After all, this hotel is worth his price and good place if you just want to spend the nights there to sleep.

The staff was very helpful.
The location is very good, it is near food market, near bus stop, near an art street and near the town. Very comfortable. I could go anywhere by walking.
Hotel has free wifi.

I took a prepaid taxi from the airport. Cost depends on arrival time as there is a surcharge for late night. Taxi is somewhat expensive by Asian standards but heaps cheaper than we would pay here in Australia. Also it is a bit of a distance from the airport to Georgetown about 10 or so kilometres so probably reasonable for how far you travel. There are also buses which would be cheaper but as I didn't use them for that journey I can't really comment.
I took a taxi about a year ago from airport to Malabar Inn - I think it was about $40 or $50.
I liked Malabar, the staff were really helpful and friendly
