I booked this hotel for 4 nights using a well known booking site. But, the hotel is now part of a hotels chain named OYO, which acted as a "man in the middle" between my booking site and the hotel. Hence: - 24 hours before stay, I received an email asking me to go on some web page and press a "confirm" button, otherwise my stay was to be cancelled - while I was boarding my plane for Penang, I got a text message requesting me to call a Malaysian number in the next 30 minutes, otherwise my stay was to be cancelled! I was not nice on the phone as you can figure... - on the second day of my stay, OYO cancelled the booking on my booking site as "no show"! Given the content of the phone call the day before, I would not be surprised that they cancelled the stay so that I am unable to leave comments on my initial booking site... So, my advice after this experience is, AVOID ANY OYO MANAGED HOTEL! Otherwise: - the hotel is very well situated - the historical house has undeniably some charm - it is rather clean, even if the sheets could be better - the hotel staff on the premises was nice.

Decent room size and very gopd location. For the price i paid, it is value for money. But the bathroom ceiling was dripping water when it rains, i get wet when using the toilet bowl. Informed staff, came to take pics, mop the floor and left, no action is taken. The house is situation right next to a pub, the music went on past 12mn. If you need to sleep in a quiet environment, may not be suitable.

Unclean and poorly maintained. Dusty floor and bed sheets with several stains. Cockroaches found near the bed. We change place the morning after. I’m not at all picky or fancy about where to sleep, however the place was below any standard.

Absolutely awful! Poorly maintained, unclean and terrible staff. This used to be a great place to stay but now must avoid at all cost. There has clearly been a change of management and this has been a disaster. The room I had booked was already occupied when we arrived. We were told lies by the receptionist as of the reason why the room was not available but the manager told us the truth. Some new staff made a mistake with the booking. We were moved to the right room the following day. Breakfast is included but is extremely poor. Toasts, butter, jam, Roti Phrata and sauce. That is if you get this. On the last day only toasts were available. The receptionist told us that the hotel was quiet and therefore they did not prepare breakfast.... I guess that the fact we were guests escaped his mind... The same receptionist, a young guy, became quite threatening when I complained again about the choice of breakfast. He basically gave me the come on to have a physical fight..... Seriously???? Unless you tell reception that you want your room cleaned, they will not do it automatically. This means no fresh towels everyday, etc.... They really cannot call themselves a hotel anymore. Although not allowed to smoke in the hotel, a member of staff is smoking in the courtyard. The hotel is poorly maintained, the internet intermittent and in need of a very serious clean up. If there was a case study on how not to run a hotel, this would be gold standard.

This is a small but beautiful hotel with clean rooms and nice amenities for a good price. On top of that, the staff was extremely helpful and even let us change our booking at the very last minute for no extra cost when we missed our train. The only downside was that you could hear the bar downstairs, which was a nuisance on one occasion. Still highly recommended.

We opted for the VIP suite - since it was priced not too differently from the Nam Keng hotel which we stayed in previously. Unfortunately, suite was a bit of a misnomer. Yes it's a heritage building - but the room felt more like a manifestation of the owner's intention to ride on the 'heritage' wave - many parts of the room felt like it was not properly restored (the plaster ceilings with water stains, the wooden bathroom divider that seems really worn, the wall finishes etc) I'd overlook this if the property was clean - it wasn't quite so. The floor was so dusty - in the picture I uploaded of the floor tiles, look closely and you can see footprints! The area beneath the sink was obviously mouldy too. There was no window - which resulted in a really musty smelling room (thank goodness for the in-house air purifier!) Didn't help that the service was just meh - it was the first time that I've stayed in a hotel in Penang where the front desk weren't locals. Overall, definitely will not return.

I spent 7 nights at this hotel last December-2018.The hotel is quaint and located in what used to be an old private mansion. It is also very centrally located and within walking distance of many of the sights of Georgetown.Breakfast each morning was excellent and the staff were super friendly. At this point I want to pay tribute to Peter from Myanmar and to Lizel....However there was one problem-sleep quality was very poor. Some guests returned late each night and insisted on talking loudly. In my room every word could be heard. On another occasion the new owners of the hotel decided to carry out a Purification Ceremony to rid the place of anything bad and to ensure prosperity and good fortune for them as the new owners. This ceremony was conducted....between midnight and 3am !!Every movement, every word could be heard in my room.I got out of bed at one stage to complain and was told "Yes.Yes.Sorry.Sorry ".But the noise continued.Eventually I got up again, went downstairs and sat in the reception area until the people involved in the ceremony left-laughing.A good night's sleep is important-for me at any rate.Unfortunately it could not be found here....Will not return and, despite the positive comments made already,I can award this hotel only 4 out of 10.Disappointing.

This is a vintage house well over 100 years old, the building itself is charming with lots of characteristics, rooms have simple and yet nice old deco, there's a beautiful patio inside the house that brings a great atmosphere, for people wish to stay in an old Penang style heritage house in George town, this is a very good option to consider because it is very conveniently located and close to many attractions and local food stalls/bars/restaurants. However there are a number things to consider, first if you are a light sleeper you can pretty much forget about this place, the old wooden windows in each room offers absolutely zero soundproof, from inside the room you can clearly hear people talking and making all sorts of noises in the patio, and since this is a guest house not a typical hotel I found many guests here do not seem to care about the privacy of other guests, many talk very loudly in public area and let their kids running around and squealing inside the building, I've had a hard time sleep in this hotel since the day checked in. I also found tiny insects (look like very small ants) crawling everywhere in the room, but do keep in mind that this is a very old house constructed with wood, therefore to be fair you can't expect the same level of cleanness and comfort as in some fancy hotels. Air-con works well, internet is ok too, bathroom is small, but what really bothers me is shower area being too close to toilet and there's no curtain between them. Hotel staffs are very friendly, do let them know if you want your room to be cleaned.

Good breakfast with loads of choices, but the Malaysian breakfast was available only in fish curry. That was a disappointment. I was hoping the Malaysian curry option was available in vegetarian, which it wasn't. However, the American breakfast and the pancake breakfast options were available in vegetarian, which was nice. The room was good, with a reasonably comfortable bed and decent enough amount of space, but the window in the room was facing inside the hotel, and not outside towards the street. Good shower and bathroom. This heritage hotel has really pretty and warm interiors, all gorgeous woodwork. Nice dining/breakfast area where you can interact with other guests, but it looked messy in the evening as some of the staff were eating there and it had not been cleaned. Staff was helpful, but I think they weren't used to seeing many solo women travelers, as they were curious about why I was alone. That was weird. Wi Fi connectivity was a bit poor at times, and kept getting disconnected. Overall, a nice experience.

This is a beautiful hotel with teak floors and fittings, very distinctive, a real heritage house, and the staff are so kind that it's like being with family. We were really well looked after and we appreciated it.
