Detailed Reviews
Having been traveling on this trip for 3 years I visited Penang a number of times but this is the first time I stayed here, and I am so glad I did. Having been here a week I can say the staff are simply fabulous and amazing. They really go the extra mile to make your stay comfortable, and provide for your needs. The hotel is brand new and the rooms are great, clean, spacious and nice new aircon. The hotel is very clean all day everyday, the wifi is good even inside the rooms, the breakfast is included and very lovely. It was my birthday while I stayed here, they were so lovely they got me a cake and organised a group dinner with staff for me which they covered...unbelievably kind and generous. I went night fishing with friends and when my other friend turned up late at the hotel and found out we had left, a staff member rode her to our fishing site, again another lovely gesture. The did my laundry hand washing for a small fee which surprised me. I simply have trouble expressing how lovely they are in words, having been to over 40 countries I can say service like this is very very hard to come by. God bless them and I look forward to my next stay.

Spent four nights at Heritage Sixteen and thought it was an OK stay. Best thing about the place is the kind staff as well as their varied breakfast. Worst thing? The paper-thin walls (they're not walls actually, more like partitions), neck to neck with their excruciatingly slow (and quite unstable / undependable) Wi-Fi connection. In terms of decor, I don't understand why some reviewers are raving about Japanese decor or lovely touches. Frankly, you can't find anything more barebones than this in terms of decor. My room had a desk but no chair - a nice Japanese touch, if you consider that most Japanese homes do not have any permanent furniture lying around gathering dust...
I had a private room with en suite - see the pictures to get an idea of what you're getting. The bathroom is a tiny little box placed in a corner of the room. Unlike a lot of other reviewers, I didn't find the place to be spotless - in fact, the bath mat on the floor just outside my bathroom looked dirty and had a couple of long black hair on it, and the upper shelf in the bathroom had not been cleaned. Their TV, like their Wi-Fi connection, is pretty much useless unless you speak malay or mandarin, as there is only one English channel and it is a generic and rather uninteresting channel. No BBC or CNN, so you'll have to get your news from their Wi-Fi connection. In other words, good luck keeping informed, as you're in some kind of a catch 22 situation here.
Beds are hard (the mattress is a sheet of wood covered with a thin coating of foam from what I could tell) and pillows are thick and hard as well. Apparently, this is what's common in this part of the world, and no accommodation is made for the fact that a lot of people coming here to stay are not from this area of the globe. There is no sound insulation whatsoever, so you hear anything and everything, and can only pray that your next-door neighbours will be respectful and will tread lightly. This was not the case on my last night here and I was not able to sleep until quite late.
This hotel seems to be popular with young families (lots of young kids and babies while I was there), so the noise factor becomes even more of an issue if you are not noise tolerant like me. They do offer a lovely breakfast every morning between roughly 8:30 and 10:30 - lovely if you like Asian breakfasts. Other than eggs, it's all got a powerful (and wonderful) Asian twist to it. And make sure you have an extra 50-ringgit bill with you when you check in, as they will ask you to leave it at reception as a (key?) deposit during your stay. Would look for a better place next time I visit Penang, I'm sure there is better value for your money out there.

At first we tried to get a room in the Red Inn on Love Lane. They were full and the lady recommended us Heritage 16. This is about the best thing that could have happened to us. We were welcomed enthousiasticly en got a very nice, clean double room with aircon and attached bathroom for a very good price. Breakfast is included and was very nice! For the same price, we've stayed in less pleasant accomodations in Malaysia. Perfect start for our stopover in George Town.
I specially liked the hallways and room names, which gives you a feel of authenticness.
Heritage 16 is situated in a side road of Lebuh Chulia, where you feel in the heart of George Town.
They serve local food and nice, refreshing drinks. Try the ice blended passionfruit!
Next door is Teksen Restaurant, very popular with locals. Try it and you will know why.
But most of all, it was the staff who made our 3 night stay here memorable! They know how to make a guest feel welcome, help you on trips, tips and good advise.
Heritage 16 Crew,
Thank you for your hospitality and making our stay in George Town unforgetable!

Filthy, dirty rooms and toilets not to be mentioned.
Barely any privacy. There are only one concrete wall on one side and a cock sheet on 3 others sites
And you got sewerage plumbing running everywhere.
You can hear people flushing toilets all night if you rooms next to (Most of them ) the dorm shared toilets and shower.
Whole room lights up when the toilet lights is switched on.
Breakfast! go down the road. $2 street breakfast (local) is way better than what they provide for an example.
TV does not work either.
Enough said, if you want to find more, you can stay there and write an Essay later

We were travelling on a shoestring and booked cheap...what we got was a lovely period establishment in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage district - its been kept very authentic, especially upstairs where you will find plentiful well kept bathrooms, and lovely clean spacious rooms. The staff went out of the way to be helpful, to the extent that the owner actually help arrange for the delivery and collection of a camera left on a bus, even driving us himself on an hour round trip to finally collect it from a bus station near the airport, a true hero!!
On busy nights in George Town rooms at the front will be little noisy till quite late and also the WiFi was a bit hit and miss... In both cases this is par for the course around this area so it should be expected IMHO.
Overall, great value, clean, simple, welcoming and friendly... Almost forgot to mention a daily changing free breakfast of authentic local food, brilliant! (If you aren't quite in the spirit at that time of day then there is tea, coffee, toast and fried eggs every day too!)

I came here with my friend on 27th June for 3 nights (Friday until Monday) and we stayed at Room 4.
When I first stepped into the hotel, I was surprised against the heritage atmosphere and it looked quite small.
But it was not, after I followed the staff there to upstairs, the environment there was quite good.
The toilets and bathrooms there were clean but a bit small. The hotel provided free wifi which is quite fast. My room's air-conditioner was good and could feel the coldness.
There had band show on Sunday afternoon, it was really an amazing show. I am not sure it was just had on that day or has it on every Sunday.
Besides, the breakfast was good as well, typical local foods and fresh.
The staffs there were friendly and helpful. They have introduced us many interesting places in Penang.
If you looking for the streets arts, those are nearby the hotel too. Can search those walls or ask the people there for the places too.
I would recommend you guys to stay at Heritage Sixteen as a nice place to stay:)
(It is a nice budgeted hotel, if you guys looking for 5 stars hotel then just ignore my post, thanks)

Friendly staff, great breakfast, nice water cooler/heater to brew our own cup of tea and refill our water bottles, plenty of clean shared bathrooms.
We were prepared for some noise, but it was absolutely terrible. We had one of the cheaper rooms in the far corner at the front of the building, which did not have blinds and had two windows (front and side of the building) from which a lot of noise came. Just imagine sleeping next to a highway full of tuktuks... Earplugs and beer helped a wee bit, but not enough. Internet reception was very poor and sometimes non-existent in this cheap room as well. It was much better downstairs in the restaurant. In this particular room, the mosquito's could just enter our room through some gaps. We brought our mosquito net, so no big issue.
We would stay here again, but then book a more expensive room a little bit further away from the street.

We had a great stay at Heritage Sixteen. First and foremost, the staff are fantastic! The moment we walked in to get an idea of the price, cleanliness, etc, we got the most welcoming reception from the lovely Edward. We stayed for 6 nights. Our room was a double air-con, very private and quiet, off to the right as you come up the stairs. Fresh towels were never a problem and they were only too pleased to clean our room when we needed it. The bathrooms are shower over toilet style, very clean, toilet paper provided as well as dispenser soap and shampoo. The wifi is pretty good, there's a nice common area, FREE hot and cold filtered water (fantastic), cheap bike hire and lots of knowledge about their town. Only too happy to help out, ask them anything and everything. Each morning you wake to tea/coffee and a buffet breakfast of local food, sure to fill any tummy. We enjoyed the good humour of Lim on duty in the evenings. The location is perfect - everything is in walking distance and you can pop down to Komtar to catch a bus to further attractions if you choose although we walked, biked and scootered everywhere. You will be very happy with your decision to stay at Heritage Sixteen. Without a doubt we would definitely stay again.
Thank you for your hospitality!

This hotel offers pretty decent value, but has some negative points. I will start with those. The rooms are very sparsely furnished, and have paper thin walls. You hear everything that is going on in the building. The 'deluxe' rooms are listed as having an ensuite bathroom, but that is basically a cubicle the size of a telephone booth in the corner of the room. Not quite worth paying the price difference. The rooms aren't cleaned unless you request it, which can be a good or a bad thing, depending on how you look at it.
The shared bathrooms are not very comfortable either. They are tiny stalls outfitted with a hot shower unit on the wall. This means that you have hardly any space to stand, and are taking a shower above the toilet bowl.
The hotel offers free wifi, which is reasonable fast... if it works. I had the wifi dropping out on me very frequently, and often couldn't connect at all. If you depend on a reliable internet connection for work, this place isn't for you.
That being said, the rooms, the hallways and the bathrooms are clean, and look fairly nice. The high ceilings make everything feel a bit more spacious than it really is. There is a comfortable couch in the hallway and there is a computer area with some cushions, which are nice if you don't want to sit on your bed. The cafe downstairs also has chairs and tables, and offers free water, coffee, and tea to hotel guests.
Best of all is the very friendly staff, who speak good English and can give you advice about anywhere you want to go on the island. They serve a splendid free breakfast in the morning with a good selection of Malaysian food and sweets.
At 65 RM for an airconditioned room, the hotel isn't bad value. You just have to be aware of the negatives and be able to live with those.
