The hotel is well located. The old entrance from the jetty side is more convenient than the rear entry.
The staff provided good service.
The breakfast in the Sri Tanjan cafe was pleasant.
It was an an awful experience in the storeroom which we had to endure for 2 days of our stay.
The housekeeping needs to be improved, dirty corners and drawers

The front desk was exceptionally helpful ,service by Ms. Devika was very professional and Ms Ayu was always ready to help.
The breakfast was a beautiful experience thanks to AINE ,she beautifully managed the egg and noddle counters.
Alif the housekeeping staff had a kind smile.
It would be helpful to have an attendant at the pool area.
On the 14Dec there was not a single towel available at the poolside.
Had to go to the phone area after having changed in my swimsuit and after a call to front desk it took over 30minutes for towels to be available.
The access card to the room very not always functioning making it a challenge in the lift area.
The ladies toilet outside the cafe area is not maintained, the toilet roll was completely wet and no replacement in the toilet.
Yes, I would recommend the hotel based on its location to the Jetty However, the standards need to be improvised based on its given 4 star rating.

We really liked it here. The location is great, close to the fort, the jetties and Armenian Street. The staff is friendly. Our room was spacious, clean and cozy thanks to the carpet. The beds were super comfortable. The breakfast was one of the best I've had in a long time with a large selection of local food, dark bread (!), fruit, yoghurt, egg dishes and cereal. The breakfast room is just too small and therefore fills up quickly.

We were very impressed with everything at the Royale Chulan.

Straightforward, no hassles check-in, easy secure covered parking in the hotel's own multi-storey car park across from the lobby and all staff from the doorman to reception staff to cleaners were friendly and helpful. Undoubtedly one of the highlights for us was that, compared to other hotels we've stayed in, the staff really went the extra mile for guests.

Rooms had been properly and thoroughly cleaned and I liked the bathroom layout with separate rooms for the toilet and shower.

At breakfast, although no buffets are currently allowed due to covid19 restrictions, there was still a good range of set menu choices. Service was prompt and attentive with staff regularly checking to see if you were ok or needed anything. Obviously, guests not serving themselves gives the staff more work and it was noticeable that the hotel had clearly thought about this and responded appropriately by putting more staff on to ensure guests were well looked after.

Location is excellent too being right in the centre of George Town. Lots of tourist attractions, including Little India are within a short walk. I had thought we might have a view across the Straits to the mainland. Not so, but that was my mistaken impression from looking at the map. Most rooms actually face inwards and overlook a central courtyard which is now the swimming pool. But this was fine - traffic noise was zero, which is unusual for such a central location.

We would certainly look to stay here again when we are next in Penang and I will probably check out other Royale Chulan hotels too when we are elsewhere in Malaysia.

The room is not well maintained. There are alot stains on the carpet and there is a musky smell to the room. I am unable to open my curtain to let some sunlight in because of the room’s location. It is directly next to the swimming pool and theres zero privacy. Toilet is extremely dirty with pee sticking on the toilet seat. I called the front desk to request for a room change, they said they are fully booked and they can only get the housekeeping to come and HAVE A LOOK at the toilet. They then told me that it might take a long while since they are all busy so housekeeping wont be able to come in anytime soon. I checked out right after and booked another hotel. I guess they got so many bad reviews, they didnt even ask why i checked out 15 mins after checking in.

House keeping team is horrible!!! They didn't throw the rubbish in our room for 3 days, ball of hair remained in the toilet for 3 days, it means they never clean the floor in the toilet, dirty tea cup and never washed it, the sink is full of thick and black mould and stains. They only change the bed sheet and towel. What is going on in this hotel? Budget 2 star hotel is cleaner than this "Royal" hotel.

This is the worst experience I have ever had. The hotel itself is good but the cafe staffs for breakfast during the 2024 Aidil Adha were all rude . We come at around 8.30 and the cafe is crowded. Everything was ok at first . I came with my mom and my baby so it's gonna take some time to eat. Suddenly , two of the FnB staff was talking loudly and rudely behind our table with the intention of making us know that we needed to leave. Like I mentioned, I got an elderly and a baby so it will take a while, I even pay for this so it's not free but why do they treat us like we eat for free? They said harshly that we need to leave immediately because others want to eat. Why so? If you know a lot of people coming, why dont you manage it in the first place? Use other rooms or whatever , not just send people out of the cafe. They have weak management skill but blame it on guests, such a despicable attitude. I have slept at better hotel than this, i have never been send out for anything. I will not come here again

Room 1 - Toilet is not cleaned thoroughly with PEE stain and water droplets on the floor around toilet bowl (god knows if it is just water or pee). Requested to change room

Room 2 - changed to room 2, carpets has wrappers around, sheets has particles and hairs, with black stain all over

Waited for 20min to speak to hotel manager and a long while to finally get a room changed

Totally unacceptable. Let you judge from the picture

1st day, location is good, very convenient. Across the parking is a Hawker food place. Less than 5 mins walk is a convenience store.

Buffer breakfast included and it's the best. Egg station ( poached, soft boiled, Sunnyside up, scrambled), noodle soup station, fresh roti, lentils soup, curry, local Malay breakfast ( rice, chili curry, ckn curry, anchovies, peanuts), chinese breakfast (dimsum, buns, congee and toppings) cheese, sandwiches, salad, fresh fruit, yogurt Station, coffee, tea, juice, bread, Pastry, croissants....

Would have stayed in the same hotel in KL had it popped up when we were googling. It was 2 doors away fr impania. Too bad as I would have love royal chulans breakfast over impanias any time.

We had to pay extra $20 cad for breakfast at impania n dogfood taste better!

The Royal Chulan. The website and pics look great yeah? Well, it isn’t. As the hotel is seeking a halal certification, there are no bars, there is a no alcohol policy. This little gem of information is not shared on their website nor prior to booking.

We booked a room at this hotel on short notice ( previous evening) as we arrived in Penang a day ahead of schedule. On arrival the reception staff were so efficient and friendly, so first impression was excellent. We were shown to our beautifully presented room and, for the price we paid it was absolutely fantastic, clean, cool, with all the frilly bits toiletries etc.
We arrived in Penang at the ferry terminal and discovered that the hotel was walking distance away, about 700 metres, so that was a plus, hotel situated at the edge of the UNESCO area so everything we wanted was walking distance.
We were so impressed by the hotel, and it’s location we decided to reschedule and added a few more days to our stay in Penang which meant rescheduling our travel arrangements. Again the hotel staff were absolutely fantastic in assisting. The Royale Chulan experience was the highlight of our Malaysian trip and we are already looking forward to returning for a longer stay in the not too distant future
