The hotel has a very nice appearance and was once a nice place to stay, I imagine. The lobby and common areas are very pleasant and have some nice artwork. But management has terribly neglected the hotel by cutting costs. Electric outlets don't work, wifi is iffy, no English channels on TV, the cafeteria is closed so "breakfast included" means brought from off premise to your room at precisely 8:00, which is poor for early starters and late sleepers both. Our superior room had a bad odor so we elected to move rooms after two days, causing us to downgrade to a standard room. The odor was less acute, but the paint was peeling in the shower in both rooms. The worst of all was the laundry. The pillows are smelly and the bath towels will leave you covered with a very disagreeable odor. I hate to write a bad review, especially when the staff was so cordial, but bedding and towels need to be clean. That's really not too much to expect. I would not stay here again under any circumstance.…
The bed was rock hard and squeaky, towels were musty and shower smelt of sewage. It’s also next to a mosque so the prayers can get quite loud. I could hear furniture dragging above me in the middle of the night too. Gave 2 stars for friendly enough staff — nothing stellar but alright. There are better places to stay near chulia street. Would give this place a miss.
Absolutely underwhelmed. Stayed here pre-Covid-19. The hotel is under new management who greet you officuously. Price has increased 30% but.....Gone are the welcome drink vouchers, gone is the restaurant buffet breakfast, gone is the free ice cream on the roof top bar. In fact the roof top bar was not open and the restaurant is now a cafe seemingly catering only for staff and their family members. Will never stay here again at any low price
Do not bother to put in request for a room far away from the mosque. They give me, the room right next to the mosque. And the room is not sound proof. I think the management now is different from a couple years before. Other than that, the location is great to walk around Georgetown. Many delicious food around and in walking distance.
I have stayed here many times. The hotel closed for the MCO but was re-opened in May 2022 by Moxy, a multi national hotel group. The Tripadvisor entry is the same as it always was and is now totally misleading. The visitor posts which the hotel has highlighted are from the previous regime and are now equally misleading. A feature of this hotel was the excellent buffet breakfast presided over by the resident chef. Free breakfast is still advertised but it does not exist. The dining room is closed and so you will have to pay to eat out. Which also means that the free tea, coffee and cookies which you could help yourself to during the day are also gone. They still advertise the rooftop bar with a free drink each day. But the rooftop is bar with its friendly and attentive Bangladeshi barman is closed. As is the jacuzzi and free icecream. The montage of photographs the company puts up on Tripadvisor still show the breakfast and the rooftop bar and jacuzzi. Deliberately misleading! Tea and coffee in the room is now reduced to horrible little three part instant sachets. The advertised electric kettle does not exist. You get hot water from a machine outside in the corridor. Also the free bottled water advertised does not exist. There is a flat screen TV, as advertised. All channels are fuzzy and none are English speaking. The room safe, as advertised, is there, but does not work. Amazing for this day and age there are no USB ports in the room. Redecoration has not happened. My shower had lots of peeling paint. There is a mosque next door so and the loudspeakers can be heard in every room so expect noise just before 9 pm and again at 6 am. There are lots of hotels in the area so give Chulia Mansion a miss!…
Stayed for 5 nights 19th-24th February. Second stay at this hotel. The hotel is set in a superb location on Chulia Street which makes going out in the evenings very easy. There are a multitude of eateries and bars along Chulia Street and Love Lane right on the doorstep. I would say the location of the hotel is one of it's best features. Complimentary evening drink and ice cream on the roof terrace served by a very friendly and sociable bar tender, this was a nice touch as well as the free tea and biscuits that were available during the day. The room was clean and well kept, however there seemed to be a problem with the flow of water from the shower which made it a bit difficult to have a nice hot blast of water on you at the end of a hot sweaty day. Breakfast was ok, not the biggest selection but enough for both of us. Eggs can be cooked to your liking to order. All in all we enjoyed our stay and would stay again because of the excellent location.…
Stranded in Penang for 6 nights I am so happy I picked here to stay Spotlessly clean with friendly staff and well appointed rooms Breakfast and 24 hour tea/coffee included as are free nightly drink on rooftop bar Only slight negative is the slow internet speed You could pay a lot more and get a lot less for your money...I will be back
I didn’t make any advance book but just choose this central located hotel due to it parking space. From the first moment I stepped in I felt welcome from the cheerful staffs! The beds were so comfy, that I didn’t want to leave the room even though the set up was so minimalistic but the room was super clean. The free evening wine on the rooftop was an additional bonus. Would definitely stay here again.
First, the hotel is perfectly located; right on a bus line and easy to walk to different sites. Our room was lovely, comfortable and clean (except for a few little bugs in the bathroom). The bed was comfy and we really enjoyed our stay. Where on earth is there a hotel that offers free ice cream and wine? They also offer free drinking water. Those were great touches. The breakfast is ok. Some days were better than others but most of the time it was underwhelming. The staff were nice to us and we would totally come back and stay.
This would be my 3rd stay here at Chulia Mansion but sadly it disappointed me compared to the previous 2 stays. 1st there are mosquitoes here. I was bitten at least a couple of times each night. You could smell the mosquito repellent along the hallway. Not sure why they couldn’t solve this. Secondly the breakfast was really disappointing. My wife commented that the previous breakfast selections were great and fresh but not this time. The dishes especially the noodles were either dried out or not replenish at all. The remaining selections were not appealing. Very big difference from the last time. I have to say this is a nice hotel with a great location but that’s it. Probably this would be my last time staying there
