I love this place! Angmoh hostel is one of hostels which are so much more than just a cheap place to stay. Such an amazing social atmosphere and good facilities which is so rare to find at such a low price! Miss you Dave!

Arrived at angmoh and the first thing i see is a friendly staff member behind the reception. Shows me around the hostel to make sure i know my way i case i need something. The beds are comfy, the shower is clean and hot for those chilly mornings. Within 5 minutes you’re in little india where you can enjoy an amazing roti canai! In the evening you’re close to the party scene or maybe have a few drinks out at the front of the hostel. I haven’t experienced such nice staff in a long time, they are friendly, fun to hang out with and ready to give you a hand when ever its needed. Special thanks to David, miami, leah, tania, tabea, yargen, carlos and anas! Will be back

This place is a burning trash bag full of excrement and regret. Upon arriving in January, we were happy to find a social atmosphere. In fact, let's be honest, I think that may be the only positive thing I'll end up saying about Angmoh. The worker at the front desk, who seems to be a traveler as well, had a relaxed air about him. This was fine for a check-in. We were offered a double bed for no extra charge, which was a nice gesture, and made our way upstairs. The bathrooms? Subpar. The rooms? Muggy. Sure, that's fine. It's all acceptable to me. I expect that a budget hostel isn't going to be the cleanest, and sure, everything might be wet ALL the time. But this time, things were WAY worse than we could have imagined. After about 20 minutes of being in bed with the lights off, my partner starts to feel itchy. Lights on, bugs scatter... Immediately I'm on high alert. I've experienced bed bugs before and they're a nightmare, but seriously, I'm so accepting of situations that I just want to talk things out with the staff. I found the guy who checked us in and let him know our situation. "Oh, still? We just had the beds cleaned last week." Okay... Fine. But we're sleeping in a bed full of bugs. I could tell he was slightly annoyed, but I'm STILL tolerant. I'm still having a decent time. He put us in two single beds on the first floor, where "No beds have ever gotten bugs." Sure, then why is the first floor stacked with new beds? Because our things were on the bed, we asked to have our belongings washed in order to make sure they hadn't spread. All I got was annoyance. Like it was an inconvenience. And I get it, that sucks to have to wash our things, but the staff could have been more understanding. Unless of course, they deal with it often... When we go to retrieve our clothing the next morning, another guy rounds up our things. Half of our clothes weren't together, which is FINE, but when we go back to grab our stuff, it was either some of it was wet, or some of it was DRENCHED in... Gasoline? Something smelling of petrol. Many of our clothing was ruined when we left. Our laundry bag that was washed had to be thrown out, as it looked like it was laid in a puddle of gas. I honestly don't even understand how that could've happened. And when we were given the laundry bag: "Is this yours too?" No apologies. No care. Just some real sadness and exhaustion. Everyone working there is disinterested in anyone or anything but themselves and a good time. They say it best on their chalkboard behind the desk: "You have to be a *blank* to work here." The only thing that saved our trip to Penang was changing hostels. We ended up staying in Ryokan Muntri hostel down the road, and honestly, it was bliss comparatively. If you want to have a beautiful trip, stay absolutely anywhere else.

I have been traveling for the past 15 months, primarily staying in hostels. This hostel is the worst hostel I have stayed in in Asia. The pics you see here on trip advisor are not accurate anymore. I should have done more research but the booking.com reviews didn’t seem too bad. First of all, I booked a 10 bed dorm and got informed upon arrival that there are no rooms with 10 beds just 25 and 20 bed dorms. I got put into the 25 bed dorm. As soon as I saw my bed, I saw a bug crawling on the curtain. I didn’t think anything of it just then, but they were also crawling inside my bed cabin and I could see they were full with blood. BED BUGS! I changed room to the 20 bed dorm and after checking it seemed ok. However other people also mentioned bed bugs and we just got put in a different room. The hostel employees didn’t care about the fact that that helps spreading the bed bugs to other rooms too. Upon doing more research about this hostel, they are aware of bed bugs for months now and acted surprised when I told them about it. I didn’t see anyone taking care of it and I saw someone new sleeping in my old bed the next day. It doesn’t matter to them. The staff are all volunteers, working for accommodation I assume, super young and just not bothered. One guy at reception checked in a guest this morning shirtless and half drunk. They also promote a disrespectful atmosphere because they sleep in the same room as the guests, come in at 1am or 2 am in the morning, speak loudly etc.. and then other guests seem to adopt this habit and just don’t care. Face time without headphones, listening to music without headphones, opening and closing luggage 10 times in a row at 3 am in the morning. I never had issues like this before anywhere else. Never!!! Also, the bed sheets don’t fit the mattress so you kinda end up sleeping on the dirty mattress if you don’t want to spend all night adjusting your bed sheet. Toilets, sinks and showers look like they never get cleaned. Same pubic hair around the toilets since the day I checked in. No soap to wash your hands anywhere either. It’s just disgusting. If you are a very young backpacker, like to get drunk, high and don’t mind dirty toilets and bedrooms, then you have a great time there. Well, except the bed bugs of course. Everyone else, don’t go there!!!!!

This is a poor hostel, the worst I have stayed at in SE Asia, which is a shame, as it has potential. I’ll start with the good bits. Location, price, comfortable mattresses, breakfast of toast/fruit/boiled eggs provided for free. Bad bits. Hostel is run by volunteering travellers who do not seem to have been trained by the Hostel owner when it comes to anything at all. They are not bad people, they’re just inept. The WiFi is very poor, works sporadically throughout the day and is slow when it works. The bed sheets are too small for the beds, so you wake up sleeping on the mattress in most cases (picture provided). The dorm areas aren’t the cleanest, dirty tissues tucked down the corner of the beds (picture provided). I didn’t take a picture of the random underwear strewn around the dorm floor either. On the night that we stayed one of the 2 toilets for our 20 bed dorm was soiled badly all over the floor. Despite many guests raising their concerns to the volunteer staff on reception, nothing was done after 4 hours. When I spoke to the reception staff, I was told that the cleaner doesn’t start until 10am, so they’d leave the toilet in the dire state until that time. (Picture provided - not for the faint hearted). This doesn’t seem like it was a one off event. I feel the pictures the Hostel provides of its accommodation are dishonest. The communal area downstairs was nothing more than an old industrial space with a few chairs and board games. I guess it was an OK place to get drunk. I for asked for a refund for the coming night, which was fairly given to me. Listen to the bad reviews, do not stay here, unless you like dirty student digs.

Don‘t go there. BEDBUGS will eat you up during the night and it will be a terrible experience. Sheets are dirty, showers are dirty, toilets are dirty, electic outlets didn‘t work, smelly dorms - and nobody is really doing something about these issues. It was the worst hostel I visited in my whole life.

-VE: (a) The moment I laid on my bed, I noticed a foul smell. I was tired and thus decided to put up with it for the night. Woke up to dozens of bed bug bites on my body. I asked to be shifted to another bunk. (b) Lobby area was also not clean. Very sandy and stayed that way for all 3 days of my stay. (c) Staff are not professional. Yes I know they are travellers working as well but they're more interested in smoking up than really serving people properly. +VE: (a) Friendly communal vibe. Relatively easy to make friends and head out to supper with other travellers. (b) Location was also excellent.

This hostel is just perfect! The staff is super friendly, there are people from all over the world to play ping pong or beer pong if you prefer drinking ahahah the hostel is really at the center of it all, 100m from Love lane / bars /street arts. They have free breakfast, happy hour every day and cool social activities at night. Ask the staff for any recos of restaurants or bars, even cheap price for bike rent.
