It SHOULD and could be lovely, but it isn't. Window design means they let in all the noise from outside. Terrible mattress and pillow. The 'complimentary' breakfast is cornflakes and toast.
Shame as the building is really nice.

It is a lovely hotel full of history and great architecture. Close to the shops and attractions. Helpful staff and clean rooms.

Some points of improvement
*limited breakfast option (mainly white bread, jams, coffee, milk, juice, tea and cereals)
*no elevator
*no tv in the room
*noisy music lasting until 3am from the bar across the street
*no refrigerator in the room

The hotel should have information on the website to advise guests of the limited breakfast option and no elevator. It would be helpful for people who will be travelling with large suitcases to be informed. I can understand that in order to preserve an old building, and aesthetically, an elevator is not an option. But the place is not friendly for disabled guests and the elderly.

Again, guests can always eat out, but the hotel is missing out on some revenue that can be generated by providing breakfast options, can be pre ordered with options on continental or american breakfast, or local breakfast offer. No breakfast charge if guests opt not to avail of breakfast.

Also, a complete list of amenities would be helpful, so that the guests know what to expect

I was lucky to select a room on a higher floor, so I was not so bothered with the noise across the street. But dragging my suitcase 3 floors up was not much fun. But anyway, the friendly and efficient staff made my stay worth it. My adapter broke and I asked to borrow one, the lady at the reception area lent me one for free. My phone also ran out of battery and I asked the same lady to book a grab for me and she was more than happy to oblige.

The staff are well trained to actually listen to guests. I wanted to eat seafood and the uncle at the reception helped provide helpful info on where to eat seafood, too.

Overall, it was a pleasant stay :)

Dear Nihonneko123, Greetings from The Marian! Thank you for taking the time to review us. We are delighted that you had a pleasant stay with us, and we are also thankful for your suggestions and recommendations. I would like to address some of the issues mentioned. Breakfast is complimentary, we do not charge at all. We do not have a kitchen, so it is simple and lodging house standard. We admit our oversight in not mentioning it on our website, and we will rectify it. It is however mentioned on other booking websites. There is a list of amenities on our booking page, and mentioned on our website under our Hotel Facilities, that we do not have any lift. Our Wifi speed is the highest subscribed, but we understand some might still prefer a TV. We do hope to have you back with us and we wish you all the best in your future travels. Kind regards, Yvonne

The kind owner of this property went out of her way to arrange for me to stay here during the Sarawak gov lock down of Covid-19, where most hotels were shut. The Marian is a characterful old building, modernised with an interesting history. I ended up spending a month here whilst I was waiting to get a flight home. As the only guest, I felt like it was my private residence! I had the pool to myself. The hotel doesn't offer meals, but they do provide a small light breakfast and water every day. However, there is a wonderful restaurant on site, called the Granery, where I could get my coffees and lunchtime/evening meals if I wanted. This was indeed a necessary bonus! The staff were a friendly bunch and incredibly helpful taking care of me and went out of their way to support my stranded foreigner helplessness. I felt very welcomed and in a way the Marian became a home for me over this month. It is a great location, in the center of town, yet unlike the other big hotels, it retains its homely feel with the added benefit of a sweet garden, which felt like a sanctuary during a stressful time. The rooms were very clean, simple and nicely decorated in the style of the building, yet modernised. Internet was also available.

Noisiest place - traffic and 'local' street noise exacerbated by single glazing, louvers and open ceiling eaves. Locked out of our room twice by cleaners who hadn't done much more than swap two towels for one, or none... which meant hoping the reception guy would be there after going back out and down the steps. Breakfast was toast, butter, jam, peanut butter - make it yourself, & pot coffee or tea (warm). It gets a two from us because the pool was nice (but closed at 7.00pm) and the air conditioner worked. Good reviews on this place are mostly by 'local guides'. Should be priced as for a cheap backpacker dormitory. I recommend the area around Denis' Diner where the scrambled eggs are awesome - you can walk or Grab down into the nightlife and mall if you want to, coffee is correct and excellent at 18 Degrees Cafe if Denis' 'fresh pot' won't do it for you ;D

Worst hotel stay that i have experienced.
Horrible attitude of the staffs especially one housekeeping staff whom i asked for a napkin when having breakfast; she slammed the napkin on the table and gave me a murderous look. Good lord. Saw a bunch of house keeping staffs eating durian too upon my stay. Holy cow.
The only good staff with a right attitude was a waitress who was wearing a hijab. It was raining heavily when me and family finished our dinner at the Cafe and she offered us an umbrella to use to go to our room. Sad to say this hotel does not offer anythg special to guests. They are not warm at all nor do they offer any smile to their guests. I do not feel welcome at all.
So very disappointed as i have always wanted to stay here for a long time .

I love historic hotels with character so this was perfect. Actually, it's the building that's historic (built in 1885) and it was lovingly restored before becoming a hotel in 2017. The location can't be beat in Kuching. It's walking distance to anywhere you'd want to go: the waterfront, Carpenter and India streets, the Top Spot eating area, etc. The service was excellent including calling a Grab for us and letting us use the pool showers after we'd checked out (we had a night flight out and wanted to freshen up after touring the town all day and the staff was happy to accommodate us). If I make it back to Kuching, this is where I'll stay!

This hidden gem is perfect for everyone who loves a small intimate boutique hotel with characters but still enjoy your privacy. The building itself is something to shout about - English architecture is preserved, full of history, infused with some modern contemporary touch. We LOVE it!! Centrally located, less than 5min walk to Kuching Waterfront, from there you can continue taking a breeze walk to Kuching Bazaar, India Street, Merdeka Plaza Mall, museum....It is also easy to find local food, in fact the hotel has a café if you want a quick bite. Friendly staff are super helpful. We will come back and also recommend this place to our friends. Thank you for having us last Christmas (2019)

This place can be so much better . It’s an amazing property but the staff seems unprofessional. They do not have a good access to car parking , it’s very confusing.plus the staff is not even courteous or helpful enough to tell us how to access , he just let us figure it out . The rooms are small, and the blanket was something I did not like , and you can hear people talking outside , which quite annoying when I wanted to take a short afternoon nap , we also had an issue with bathroom getting clogged .. when we complained the staff dint even bother to check . But thankfully the water drained slowly later .. book this place only if you want to click some good pictures on the property .

As I mentioned in my review, I couldn't hear the karaoke bar from my room and could only hear the music in reception. As it is a period property, windows are single glazed so you can hear traffic etc but I am a light sleeper and did sleep well at the Marion Lodge. I was in room 201 I think. I just emailed the Marion Lodge and asked for a quiet room.
