Room OK but small, very nice swimming pool, but awful breakfast (very poor coffee and tea and juice, no eggs, just a few things like bread and peanut butter). Nice terrasse with good view. The restaurant downstairs didn't offer outdoor tables, only indoors. You can't simply order food to the waiters: you have to go through a QR code process: This is a poor UX for me. The food was OK but not delicious. Decorations are very nice.
Interesting historical boutique hotel with a unique ambiance, but unfortunately a bad experience spoilt the potential for an enjoyable stay. Basically I was insulted when I mentioned a problem at the hotel. This made me lose my cool, especially when no apology followed. I requested that the manager to please contact me to discuss the situation (confirmed they had my WhatsApp and Room number) but of course that never happened. Something is horribly wrong with the management of the hotel if they believe their customers are wrong and they don’t want to listen. PS The receptionist on the first night however was perfect and welcoming!
If you like period properties with soul and style, in a perfect location, immaculately clean and with the most delightful, friendly staff then this is the place for you! Oh and it has a pool and an excellent restaurant attached too. My husband and I booked this place for a week and loved it so much we extended for another week!
Too bad. No children allowed but has children play ground. Went there to visit my sister...wish to bring kids to have staycation but since no kids allowed have to cancel our plan. Hope they can change the policy in order to have family with children customers stay here. Good location beautiful hotel but no children allowed would be a big minues from us. Tq
No doubt the Marian is well positioned and has a lot of charm. It offers easy walking access within central Kuching and some great bars and restaurants are close by, ("The Junk" is a particular favourite). Frustratingly, the housekeeping desperately lets this hotel down. We stayed for 7 days and by the 4th day, no housekeeping had been done and we had to ask at reception for toilet roll and water in between time to keep us going. On the 4th day we complained and the room was cleaned and sheets/towels replaced. Day 5? Nothing. Day 6? Nothing - until we complained and then housekeeping came to the room and still managed to forget to empty the overflowing bin. Meanwhile, the shower unit didn't work properly; we needed to hold it because it didn't stay secure in the unit, nor could we adjust the height. Neither the sink nor shower drained properly. We had a twin single. The room was minimalistic - no phone, no TV, but there were a couple of mugs and a kettle that we would have had to provide our own content for. We didn't use it. The male swimming pool toilets were not tended to at all during our stay - not cleaned and toilet roll not replaced. This is not a venue for anybody with mobility issues - it is relatively arduous to mount the stairs that, at times, are quite steep and there is no shortcut or assistance - if you can't climb stairs you must absolutely not stay here. There is a restaurant nominally associated with the hotel (Kantin) which has a reasonable localised lunchtime menu. The evening menu is more westernised. I had the chicken burger - definitely wouldn't have it again. Beer selection was poor and on my final day there was disappointingly only one beer option - Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc (Tiger, and Carlsberg had apparently run out). I'd not tried it before and I couldn't tell whether it was supposed to be Weisbier or a wheatbeer. In any case, it tasted of peach, which may not have been intentional, (could equally have been infused with peach flavoured washing up liquid) and I wouldn't have it again. Amenities in the room, as suggested above, were minimal. This extends to seating. We had a small chair/stall and tiny desk. If you need to use a laptop and don't want to leave your room you'll need to do it sitting/laying on your bed! There was nowhere to recline in the room itself except on the bed. Finally, the rooms were noisy which interrupted sleep on more than one occasion.…
Overall, I do not suggest to stay at Merian. What I liked of this place are the location, and the garden with a small pool. Anyway, there are still major criticalities to be solved: - Cleanness: as per the attached pictures, the room was not clean at all when we checked in. Beside the dust, there was even the cadaver of a lizard on the floor. Based on its conditions, I think it must have been there for at least a week! Also, rooms are not cleaned daily, but only once every 3 days. - Noise: the room was incredibly noisy! As the window is very weak, high volume music came in till 2am from the neighbouring pubs. When music was finally off, we could clearly hear the snoring of the people in the room beside ours. - Transparency: one of the reasons why we chose Marian was the possibility to use its private parking, as advertised on the website (see screenshot). Anyway, when we checked in, we have been told parking was already full, so we had to find a spot on the street or pay a private parking nearby. This is not acceptable. If hotel parking has limited availability, they should specify it on the website! If this was an unexpected issue, they should have accepted to cover the costs for the private parking. End of the day, we really felt like we paid for something which wasn’t available. - Room: the room was extremely simple, with almost no amenities. - Staff: while some other staff people were nice and professional, the staff member who checked us in wasn’t. Overall, I feel that all of this is not acceptable, considering Marian is not cheap at all. Based on my experience, there are various hotels on the riverside which offer much better accommodations for lower prices!! This is why I won’t come back here next time.…
This place can be so much better . It’s an amazing property but the staff seems unprofessional. They do not have a good access to car parking , it’s very confusing.plus the staff is not even courteous or helpful enough to tell us how to access , he just let us figure it out . The rooms are small, and the blanket was something I did not like , and you can hear people talking outside , which quite annoying when I wanted to take a short afternoon nap , we also had an issue with bathroom getting clogged .. when we complained the staff dint even bother to check . But thankfully the water drained slowly later .. book this place only if you want to click some good pictures on the property .
This place really recommended for people who are looking for place to relaxing and the combination of the style between vintage and modern are so unique that makes the place so comfy and convenient to stay.
Luckily staying for a night only. Very not happy with the service and staff. No smile, no greeting and kind of rude when they talk to the customer. Don't be fooled by the web picture. And the wall is super thin as u can hear and imagine what the next door ppl doing middle of the night. No privacy at all. But most importantly is the staff attitude is very unacceptable.
I booked a family room for 22-25 Nov 2021 for 3 nights with Agoda, it was stated 38m2, with 2 double bed. But, the room does not seem to have 38m2. Many mosquitoes 🦟. The air conditioning works well, blanket provided too thin . It s undeniable that the building has old antique feel. But not for stay, for visit and Instagraming are ok. I didn't take a single photo before I left. So sorry for the photo uploaded is not the hotel / room image.
