First, the positives: the Batik Boutique is in a great location, close to good restaurants, shopping, Chinatown, and the Kuching waterfront. The staff are also friendly and the hotel offers a complimentary breakfast. Our stay at the Batik Boutique, however, was not a pleasant one. As soon as we opened the door to our room, my wife and I were struck with the smell of dampness and mildew. It was not a faint odour that lingered in the air, but an almost overpowering stink. We opened the window to see if we could air the room out, only to discover ants and bugs crawling along the windowsill and across the bed head. We called down to reception about the bugs. Two people immediately came to the room with bug spray, sprayed the perimeter, and brushed the dead bugs from the pillows and bedspread. A surprisingly quick reaction, but no offer was made to change rooms so not a good start. My wife had been nursing a mild cold before we checked in, but the cold became much worse after just one night so we requested to change rooms. We were told the hotel was booked out, but maintenance would be by to have a look at the room. No one from maintenance or house cleaning entered the room that day. With only two nights remaining, we decided to stick it out. Probably not a wise decision, as our room—and at least one other across the hallway—experienced two power outages on the second night and the staff, although very friendly, did not communicate with each other. The hotel states in their information pack that they offer a complimentary shuttle service to the airport. However, it took four enquiries with three different staff members over 24 hours to determine that the service was unavailable. The Batik Boutique has the potential to be a very good hotel. But between the mildew, bugs, power outages, and lack of communication, our three-night stay over New Years was a disappointing one.

Great location and could be an amazing hotel. Why oh why do people not just do some maintenance and keep everything looking and working great. Some very good food nearby and lots of good bars etc; location is bang in the centre of town. If they did a bit more maintenance and spruced stuff up a bit, this would be a fantastic little boutique hotel, at the moment it’s an ex-boutique hotel.

Avoid this hotel - they may lose your booking! I booked this hotel several days before going on Hotels.com and received a confirmation of my booking. However, when I arrived at the hotel they were full - overbooked! Staff (Mr Dalis) were very rude and unhelpful in assisting me. It was late evening and due to the city marathon the next day it was difficult and costly for me to find another hotel. How can a hotel such as this not have even a basic understanding of how online booking sites work...
