Detailed Reviews
Found this place on Trip Advisor, thought it was a good idea to get her first since you get picked up on the airport. An exciting jungle vibe strikes you as soon as you get through the door.
The beautiful couple of Cyril & Julia runs this place with love and care, within 5 minutes we had been shown our room & had a refreshing drink in our hands.
As we were travelling with our 1 year old daughter Cyril had arranged a nice room with our own veranda, Moa loved it now she had her own crawling space.
The Secret Sanctuary is like a big family, so friendly and you get treated like a king
(or queen).
Lush gardens, small cosy rooms, beautiful waterfall swimming pool, fish spa, big showers inside & outside.
The food is worth plenty of words, Cyril himself is an excellent cook and did the most of our food, amazingly fresh & really exciting ingredient.
A must is Cyril´s variation of Umai ( Fresh fish salad made with white snapper. )
We also had som really good jungle fern, picked the very same day.
River prawns with a succulent tomatosauce was also among our favorites.
The other thing that makes this restaurang so worth visiting is Cyril´s passionate about good drinks. I havent seen many places in Asia who can offer you this good quality of wines, many good labels and really good priced to.
The service is so friendly you almost forget that you are in a restaurant.
Cyril & his local friends helped us out with all our tours, orangutang, night safari & a visit to Baku national park ( rent a guide ) was among our favorites.
We had an amazing visit, decided to stay all our 6 days of our visit to Kuching.
We are already discussing how we can manage to come back again.
The sooner the better, the most superb place to stay if you like true friends to arrange the best of Sarawak, if you like authentic cooking and have a feel for good drinks.
A place where time stands still.
Thanks to Cyril & Julia who enriched our lives for 6 days in Borneo.

The secret sanctuary is an amazing retreat - reading all these previous bad reviews just make me think which kind of people can write them.... The place is a hippie haven like, all created by the amazing owner Cyril. All the facilities were clean, in perfect state and we'll arranged: pool, jacuzzi, Japanese hot tub. The room was very basic but super comfortable, you feel absolutely free since the inside area is an optional nudist zone (which we enjoyed all the time). I think the only flaw is Cyril marketing to attract the wrong type of people, cause there's no way you can't like here. The location is on a busy main road but you're surrounded by pond, greenery and water running and u feel like in a mini jungle retreat. The service was always kind over the top amd we had great time. Foodlike it was good but not my favourite to be honest - we may have chosen the wrong dish cause the fish was delicious amd well done but the lamb it wasn't at all. Other guests staying there loved the food on the other hand. I'd recommend this place but only to people who are open minded amd feeling to be free and to nudist lovers without a doubt.

The secret sanctuary is made by the wonderful welcome provided by it's owner Cyril and his girlfriend Julia. The place itself is an oasis of calm although our taxi driver found it tricky to find, (I suggest you print off the map provided as it is slightly outside of the town itself). Cyril kindly arranged a few tours we wanted to do and is very keen to ensure his guests get to experience the "real Kuching" and was helpful at providing information on where to go and what to do in Borneo. The accomodation itself was clean and comfortable but is basic and there are lots of places to sit and relax in the communal areas. We were there whilst the place was relatively quiet but I can imagine if full it could feel quite crowded. Finally, Cyril is a fabulous cook and uses extremely fresh ingredients (some from his own fish stocks)

it's the most worst ever management in whole kuching...me and my friends having a bday celebration there but they spoiled our celebration...the owner and the staff has a different version of their rules and regulations...it was really a very stupid idea 2 go there...some of my friends don't even know that cannot smoke in that place, but when they caught my friend smoking, they don't even give us a first warning, they just simply take our beers that we buy and payed to them...they even chase us 2 go,and never give us our deposit from room.they even threathening us that they we're goin to call police...the staff has told us whenever we add people ,we just need to pay another rm 60,that we agreed for that...but when the things happened ,the owner was chasing us 2 pay rm240,and add another rm100 for the deposit, and leave the place.we even break the rules but as far as i know,You must give us warning and never chase us go and get our money...We're not criminals to call police...and some more he even talk us that he's farm will goin 2 spoiled in 1 pc of cigarette....OH my GOODNESS! we're not an stupid people that u can simply cheated on...a worst ever experiencein kuching....

We stayed at this place for one night after paying for five. It was the worst hotel experience. We had been to Vietnam the previous two weeks and thought we would unwind and treat ourselves in a luxury stay, which the hotel's photos suggest.
The hotel is basically a suburban house set amongst industrial premises situated on a busy dual carriageway. The owner has added sleepouts and additions, which are basically bad DIY attempts, to try and make a business.
We booked also based on write ups on websites. I am really not sure who writes these. The place was dirty and amateur. Our faces dropped as we approached the hotel when we saw it's location. ..nowhere near a beach, mountain, decent restaurant. ..although if you want want your car or motorbike fixed there were plenty of places over the road to go to !
There was a small home made pool and waterfall and a jacuzzi which had a sign" clothing optional" . This was a little creepy and sickened my partner who is pretty liberal. The room was damp and smelled. It overlooked the main road and a neighbours' house . The stairs and walkways were wooden and makeshift.
The downstairs bar area was busy with local youths smoking and basically "hanging out". This was meant to be a holiday hotel not a youth club. We were the only people staying there.
The place was awful. It was amateur. We decided to check out the next morning and go elsewhere. We lost $400 as the owner refused to refund us. It was better losing this than having to stay another minute.
We have travelled extensively throughout Asia and Malaysia and have never experienced anything so dreadful.

Food and service need to be improve. Very disappointed. We are served with burned bbq chicken and have to wait for so long to be served. And feel like we are not welcome when we enter in. And the price is quite expensive......

Location is some 15-20 mins drive from the town centre; 20-25 Ringgits by taxi.
The Secret Sanctuary is alongside a main road and traffic noise at night is a problem in at least one room. There is also noise from the popular bar and restaurant and the music played there, though to be fair Cyril the owner did offer to turn the music down.
The rooms are simple and very dark but have character, though ours (all 3 of them) didn't seem to be cleaned once during our stay and the bed linen is basic.
Water features - ponds, pools, waterfalls and so on - are everywhere. Which is nice, but the mosquitoes that go with them are not - the most mosquito problem we had during our entire 2 weeks in Borneo.
The owners try to keep the mosquito numbers down with coils and spray, and they provide free repellent, but the mosquitoes will still bite. As will whatever woke me up in agony in the middle of the night by inflicting a very painful blood-drawing double puncture wound in my arm which luckily didn't yet develop into anything else more serious. Subsequent internet research suggests the culprit may have been a spider. It was after this that we finally decided to check out early. A shame because the owners are friendly and helpful (although they didn't offer a refund nor did Cyril even asked us why we are leaving early, it was his wife/ partner that did...), the food is OK and the staff are keen to be of assistance.
The self-service bar concept works well and there are some good eating places nearby, as well as an interesting small park 10 minutes walk away that has monkeys and a popular jogging track.
Overall, with a few small improvements like proper bedding, fixing doors, better lighting, cushions for chairs, and some more rigorous cleaning and pest control, the Secret Sanctuary would be a good choice for those who can easily adapt to a more alternative accommodation experience.
But even then would still only provide value for money at half the price we were charged.

A bit of a fantasy really. I love the unknown and this is what I experienced. I was attracted to the visuals of the accommodation and travelers comments and was not disappointed. Cyril and Julia are the perfect hosts, opening up their home with truely open arms. Julia is the sweetest young lady you could ever meet. Julia's thoughtfulness made my stay so pleasurable from the moment I stumbled into their truely remarkable world.
Cyril is a truely remarkable, unique character and will have a drink or two while discussing the mystery's of the world. Also he likes to shout a drink or two, bonus.
My room was amazing, large, clean, safe and I slept soundly. Large shower and toilet area which was a type of ensuite that was remarkable.
No TV so if that is a deal breaker then take your laptop and watch DVD's which is accessible. Internet is really good and free, another bonus.
Food. Let Julia treat you to new experiences, she loves to treat you to local delicacies and will enjoy having tasting plates for you. Most superb, we choose most of the ingredients from the market together on one of our outings.
Cyril and Julia also invited me to accompany me on their Saturday outings and had a wonderful time at the local market and Kutching Town.
This is a unique accommodation highlight in the suburbs of Kutching. NO SNOBS ALLOWED
Meet wonderful locals as well. Hi you

we feeli like in Bali for awhile. they provide fish spa, swimming pool, jakuzi and a very cozy place to dine in. We spent there for few hours for the fish spa. while having the ticklish feeling by the fishes, the owner went to the front desk with his cute lil puppy! I’m not a pet person and really can’t stand either cats, dogs, birds, or what so ever pets… i told the owner that i dont like the dog. and in turn, he replied me by saying “the dog also dont like you”
omg! that’s the last thing i would like to hear from the owner. A simple sorry would do. He just let the puppy walk here and there nearby my friends and i. I was so damn scared and feel so uncomfortable.
It’s a very nice place actually, except the price for the food, is quite EXPENSIVE (e.g. fish n chips at MYR38 and a glass of carrot juice at MYR12).
Other than that, i think the place really need to be maintained properly. Can see some insects and dried leaves in the swimming pool which is kinda dirty. They have the garden & forest concept i guess, but having a huge black BEE flying around you is so SCARY!
I dont think i’m going back there.

Hey my fellow traveler, Heaven is Right Here, Right Now . The Secret Sanctuary is not a Hotel or restaurant . It is Home for everyone. This is a Holistic spa retreat. WE practice love and bring back trust by doing self service at the bar counter and pay to the olive oil container or write your own tap as honesty is beautiful gift. Remember the entrance to the Sanctuary is inside you. I am just a caretaker . The bank own this place until we finish paying them . I live to give comfort i live to shine loving light into others i live to heal i live to give hope i live for truth i live to love . Love is an endless mystery for it has nothing else to explain it. Love 's gift cannot be given, it waits to be accepted . Listen to the world with love , communicate with everything In fact, if we hold love and compassion in our hearts for everything we encounter in Nature, we can interact with all of it, and secrets will be revealed to us . Listen with Heart . We are all here in this world for vacation . thank you so much .

We stayed at the Secret Sanctuary some time ago. The owners have cleverly diversified it's principally landscaping business to homestay, spa, restaurant and bar businesses.
We were allocated a two-bedroom rather-run-down house at the back. It had a bathroom attached but at times there was no water to wash and flush. The toilet floor was rather slippery and there wasn't a floor rug to dry our feet. So we had to go in and out of the bathroom very carefully after showers. LOL! The lights in the house were too dim to do anything actually. We weren't able to access the internet from our rooms too. The rubbish we collected with recycled bags weren't cleared right to our last day's stay so you can imagine the smell as the days went by.
Everything was pretty much DIY. The sink in the kitchen was choked on the first day; we fixed it ourselves. Actually, I wouldn't call that area a kitchen really - all we could do was to wash there. The aircon in the room also broke down suddenly during our stay but it was'nt fixed either.
We also had to get our supplies of drinking water from the self-service bar. We didnt sleep too well as the bed weren't comfortable - the rooms, sheets and all were rather musky and dusty and beds too hard.
Nonetheless, the food served there was pretty good (but quite pricey though). We enjoyed the lamb chop and a unique raw fish salad. The breakfasts were very simple fares but good enough to start the days with - they consisted of a glass of instant coffee, fried beehoon or noodles and some local fruits. The owners of the cottage, particularly the pretty lady owner was very helpful and friendly. She has a gift of making people feel at ease. We enjoyed the facilities such as the waterfall pool, steambath, sauna and spa. The greens and water features in the premises helped to create a relaxing climate. Which we liked very much.
The other rooms may be better (they looked brighter and better-kept) except that they don't have bathrooms attached. If you don't mind 'kampong-like' holidays, this place is ok. If you're prone to mosquite bites, you've to be prepared.
The place could use a big cleanup and revamp - especially the house at the back. We think that SSBC has the potential to become a huge attraction in this sleepy part of Kuching as it is very near Giant Supermarket and Stutong Market. Travelling to other parts of Kuching is relatively easy from SSBC.
