was given a room upgrade on arrival because this was the 4th time we've stayed there (over 10 yrs). The service is still excellent, staff pleasant and the room old but clean. Breakfast had a huge choice, leant mainly Asian but had eggs fried, boiled, poached, scrambled and one cereal changed daily. Located 100m from shopping mall. $30 by cab from airport or $11 by GRAB car.

The staff are very friendly and helpful and kind. It's located very close to the waterfront right next to the wonderful brand new cultural museum which is free.
The hotel is in very poor condition badly needs maintenance - multiple plugs in the rooms don't work, carpets haven't been cleaned in years, mold around the units, broken furniture. Everything is extremely outdated.
We changed rooms after the first night. The spa was basic but lovely staff, very reasonable.

I stayed in this hotel 12 years ago and it was amazing, but now, what was once 5 star service had turned into a budget hotel. Or maybe less. The place is now just a memory of it's former glory, with carpets in dire need of replacing, phone that is just not usable, and furniture so ancient. I think the saddest part is that the Victoria Arms is no more, which was once the highlight of that place. The staff however were pleasant and I know they were trying their best to provide the best customer service, but due to the lack of things, they were unable to do so. They can't even provide a bucket of ice just because the Victoria Arms is no more. I hope whoever owns the hotel is reading this so that you can do something about this once magnificent hotel, but if they just don't care, then it will be best if they just sell the business to someone who will.

I have traveled to many places, and I’ve stayed in so many type of rooms and none had ever disappoint me like a stay in Merdeka Palace. As a Kuching resident this is not how I would like the quality of a 3-star hotel in my home town to be represented as.

Don’t let the excellent location of the hotel fool you. First of all the hotel is gloomy and very dated. The room is dusty everywhere from the floor mats, curtains, walls and even lighting. Essentials such as iron and fridge are not available in the room. Extra pillow? Extra charge. Internet? You also need to pay extra for that. Even other cheaper hotels in the city could offer free wifi. Would I stay here again? Definitely no.

Would I recommed you to stay here?
NO - there are many other hotels in Kuching at a slight premium price but with much better experience for your memorable vacation in Kuching.

Upon arrival, concierge is nonexistent, as baggage trolleys appeared to be enjoying retirement. Check in staff was friendly, no hitches there. The room, although spacious, seems to preserve the 1970s era furniture and carpets. A 2-seater sofa for a 4 person room is just unacceptable, for which the management offered banquet chairs as a solution. Initially, all the amenities expected were absent. This includes the TV remote, slippers, bathroom floor mats and handtowels. Iron is unusable as it’s covered with a layer of melted plastic. The building in general is long due a complete overhaul. A hotel very much missing it’s good old days.

It was my first trip to Kuching with the family, couldn't believe the state of the 2 bedroom apartment! Carpets were stained at every corner, furniture and appliances are dated. For a 4 person acccomodation, they only provided 1 bath gel and 1 shower gel?!

We needed to keep requesting from housekeeping for extra toiletries, toilet paper, towels and there was no bath math for the shower that would overflow.

Even if you were on a Budget and wanted something central, don't be fooled because this 4-star hotel is not worth the stay. Better go to a newer 2-star or 3-star, plenty in the same area.

I don't really know how to say this but the hotel is barely holding together both furnishing and amenities. I'm ok with somethings not working but when the door knob literally comes off the door, the safe doesn't even work nor the hair dryer, or the room phone is broken and left in a drawer. Like basic things have to work.

The room is clean-ish. The bed is comfy though, the rain shower is awesome, its a big queen sized room for 1 pax for a business trip.

This hotel has certainly seen better days, I know its rough from Covid and etc, but the pool is dead and green, the kids playground looks like its out of a horror film, none of this is said on the website that these amenities are no longer available.

It is convenient that it is 30min from the airport by car, there is a big mall opposite and its near the Borneo Cultural Museum.

I mean, its very average to get you by. I do hope they improve and things get repaired.

I can understand its an aged hotel and upgrading or makeovers are not in the cards. But why can't it be spotless? The washrooms had a lot of black spots, stains, mold stains everywhere. I found couple of hair strands on one of the towels.

The only ups on this hotel would be the location, poor Maintenence and hotel needs an upgrade. Price was fair for the type of room you’ll get. Can notice from the lobby that this was a 5 star hotel back in days but it was poorly maintained. Shower area covered in mole, carpet wasn’t clean enough. F&B staff were sort of rude in a way. Wouldn’t stay if it’s wasn’t fully booked everywhere.

Overall rate the hotel is good but need be re’new’ed in some aspects. Things to improve:
1. The suite are good but there were parts are moldy. Need to fixed that.
2. Room Telephone line was broken. Not been fixed for 2 weeks im there.
3. Room service was good. They came everyday but didnt clean thoroughly.
Things we appreciate:
1. The management text us personally to check on us since my child had some unhealthy issues. They even offered a transportation to hospital. Thank you.
2. The staff are very friendly. Thank you.
3. The food are still very nice and cheap. Keep it up.
4. Location are great. Middle of the city.
All d best management

The pool area was not maintained and the bar area which was next to the pool area was abandoned. The area had somewhat become guests' smoking area.

I would like to know if the 'quiet renovations'of the apartments have been completed?
Answer from mphskuching
Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia
Dear trevhammo, We expect the renovation of our apartment suites to be completed before November this year. The refurbishment of the hotel started with the waterproofing and painting of the exterior of the building. This was completed in September last year. Since then, the wall paper in the apartments are being stripped (ongoing) and interior walls repainted. At the same time, there is ongoing repairs to M&E (plumbing, electrical, air-conditioning, etc) and grinding work in bathrooms in various apartments are being done. We are trying to ensure that there is least disturbance to our guests. Once most of these have been fixed, we will call in the big boys to install new bed head boards, lay new carpets and curtains, additional lighting, as well as bring in new mattresses and linen. I hope this is sufficient update on our quiet renovation. Best regards Mark Ferguson
