Cove 55 is a luxurious private boutique hotel at the foot of Mount Santubong, an undiscovered paradise near Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Built originally as a private home for an Iban family, the sprawling property is now reborn as an intimate retreat with 13 rooms, 2 suites and 13 villas. It offers an infinity pool facing the South China Sea, Pool Bar, fully equipped Fitness Centre and free Wi-Fi access in its public areas.

The Iban owners’ heritage and diverse culture is evident in everything from the cuisine to interior design. Some villas have private ocean-view pools, while others have a private outdoor mangrove deck. Rooms in the main building either have balconies or private courtyards, as well as ensuites with rain shower. All the luxuriously decorated rooms offer air conditioning.

The team at Cove 55 can arrange a number of tours during your stay, including to Sarawak Cultural Village, Semonggoh Orangutan Sanctuary, Bako National Park and Satang Island turtle conservation centre.

With so much unspoilt beauty surrounding Cove 55, it is surprisingly easy to reach. Guests can fly into Kuching Airport on international carriers such as AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines and Scoot before an easy and scenic 40-minute drive to the hotel.

An easy hours flight from Singapore & 30 minute transfer make this a wonderful option for a long weekend. The setting is beautiful an Iban holiday home the main hotel is a beautiful sprawling villa set in gorgeous grounds, with the addition of villas on stilts either in the Mangroves or over the water/sand. We had a mangrove villa which was huge, with lovely decking area with sunloungers and table & chairs, vast room with sofa area and big bathroom with plenty of wardrobe space & lovely bath with window overlooking the mangroves. Considering the impact of 2 years of no tourism on many hotels in Asia there were limited signs of repairs needed. The hotel only has one restaurant and a bar by the pool deck elevated over the sand/water depending on the tides. It's a lovely for a sundowner although unfortunately the sun sets behind the mountain not over the sea. Food choice is limited as all food comes from the same restaurant with lunch/dinner menu the same & no specials. Depending how many nights you are staying you could venture out to the Beach Seafood restaurant, left out of the hotel about 800m down the road, its a local restaurant so nothing fancy but plenty of choice & the Seafood we had was lovely & good value. We did a trip through the hotel to Satang Island, seeing Irrawaddy dolphins pretty much as soon as we left the shore & proboscis monkeys, we had some great snorkeling a lovely lunch & a visit to the turtle hatchery, great value & the crew & guide used were excellent. One suggestion for improvement would be to offer massages, I understand the property may not be busy enough to support a spa, but a collaboration with a local business for in room massage services would have been very welcome & also support the local community. The hotel were kind enough to let us check out late as we had an evening flight & all the staff were wonderful, would thoroughly recommend a stay in the tranquil surroundings.

Stayed 4 nights in the new wing ... a one bedroom ocean pool villa which was pretty spectacular. You are isolated here (eg. 20 min drive to the nearest atm) but for those wanting to come back to a quiet location rather than downtown Kuching (which is about 50 mins drive away) this is the place. But you are very close (5 mins drive) to the must see Sarawak Cultural Village (they will organise free transport to and from this) The restaurant was good with a nice bar attached. The service really excellent.

We are midway through our stay and feeling frustrated by the Resort’s inability to provide a high standard of service. Whilst most of the staff are friendly, they are so disorganised in the restaurant that this morning we waited for an hour for breakfast which was inedible (eggs Benedict) and came half an hour apart. This is just one example from the restaurant. The day we arrived, the pool was green and had algae. This was rectified by yesterday. Also our package included Airport transfers and although I responded to the Resort’s email twice requesting our arrival details, they failed to collect us (claiming they never received the email), which resulted in making a phone call and a 1 hr wait for the car to arrive. Now the good bits. Our balcony suite is roomy & comfortable although room safe not working. Spent yesterday poolside (post clean) and had the most relaxing day in and out of the pool with a cocktail from the poolside bar. Fingers crossed for balance of stay.

I chose this place for a personal retreat recently and my teen daughter tagged along. We love the clean room, bathroom and amenities provided in the room itself. The gym was well-equipped and we were allowed to use it up till 11pm. Besides that, guests are allowed to use the pool at night which is lovely for a bit of night swim. The pool was clean and there wasn't any green algae. A big plus! Overall, the place felt clean and we did not detect any trash lying about. I think the staff were friendly and helpful. If possible, I would like to return to Cove 55 for another retreat!

We stayed at the 2 bedroom Ocean Pool Villa and it was amazing. Rooms were beautifully decorated and clean. The two rooms are not connected, you need to walk past the pool to get to the other room (which has a amazing view of the sea). This worked for us as we came with grandparents so both parties have more privacy, and they converted the sofa in our room to a bed for our kids. If we were coming alone with our young kids I would be a bit concerned for them to be sleeping in a separate building from us. Another drawback with this layout is you have to walk outdoors to get from one room to another when it rains (and it rained a lot when we were there) but the hotel provided rubber outdoor slippers as well. We knew the hotel was a distance from the city center but we didn’t mind since we rented a car and the drive to town was manageable (just avoid peak hours). But I wished there were more food options around the hotel. We tried the seafood restaurant next door (Beach Seafood Restaurant) and it was terrible. The front desk told us the seafood restaurants were of similar quality so we gave up and ate at the in-house restaurant 3 out of the 4 nights we were there. Another issue we had was that it was not clear where the check-in place was when we arrived. It was raining and we only saw the entrance to the restaurant. The small road at the side of the restaurant was cordoned off and we didn’t understand what the staff was telling us as he kept speaking Malay to us (even after we told him we don’t understand the language- maybe he couldn’t hear us coz of the rain). We thought we had to park in the unsheltered carpark a few hundred meters away and drag our luggage in the rain. After we parked our car and I walked out to ask where we should go then I realised he meant for us to unload our luggage outside the restaurant. So do note that you need to unload, park and walk through the restaurant to access the “library” which is where you check in.

Dear haejina, Thank you very much for sharing your feedback about your "amazing" stay at Cove 55. We are sorry about your experience at the restaurant next door to us. Not too far from Cove 55 is the fishing village of Buntal (we are offering complimentary transfers for our guests) with several choices of restaurants, the most famous one being Lim Hock Ann. You may want to give it a try next time. We have already briefed and trained the team to ensure a more smooth arrival experience: the main entrance of Cove 55 was temporarily closed due to some maintenance work and we had to redirect our guests through the restaurant to the Library for check in. We apologize for the inconvenience caused at that time, but are glad that you enjoyed your time with us. Hoping to welcome you back to Cove 55 in the not too distant future. With kind regards, Christoph

The hotel is about 40 minutes from Kuching airport and is set right on the ocean, but the area is a river delta and the beach is not usable. This was not a drawback to us, nor it seemed to the many children staying there. It is a lovely hotel with a beautiful pool and poolside bar. The restaurant is infomal and serves a good range of food which is well presented and excellent to eat. My room was an ocean sea view villa, which certainly lived up to its name, indeed when the tide was in we were on the ocean, but well above the wave level. The grounds are spacious with mangrove forest around it. There is easy access to attaractions such as the orang utang reserve. The staff are friendly and helpful and I would certainly recommend this hotel.

Beautiful place in a nice setting. The pictures you see on their website don't lie. The rooms are well appointed with a very tasteful and minimalist decor. Everything works - great wifi, aircon, hot water etc. Great food, excellent service. A short and easy drive from Kuching. We wanted to explore the surrounding area - there seems to be a small village and seafood restaurants nearby - but our trip was cut short because of a family emergency. Weather was also not good so we could not do any river or sea activities. Will certainly be back!

A pity that this trip was cut short, but we are looking forward to welcoming you back later this year, so you can continue exploring the beautiful area of Sarawak and all its natural and cultural wonders. For our wedding anniversary, we flew from Kedah to stay for three days and two nights at Cove 55. First, we like the white theme of the resort. We stayed at the room in the main building near the library. We liked the room but the toilet was missing a bidet, a big no-no for us Asian. We had to resort to using the the toilet next to the restaurant. Apart from that we found there was no TV but then we were there to enjoy our honeymoon so it is not so much an issue. I brought my laptop and with the provided average speed Wifi (understandably it is a rural setting) we could access to outside news. The most interesting part of the resort is the large seaside salt-water swimming pool and the view was just amazing. We truly enjoyed just doing 'nothing' there and enjoying the spectacular view of the sea and Mt Santubong. This alone, is worth every ringgit we spent for two nights. We booked our stay together with breakfast and dinner. The dining experience was fantastic, and the staff assisted us to understand the menu and make our orders. The big breakfast is my most recommended dish. As for the staff, they were all polite, committed and displayed exemplary professionalisme. They even offered us free trips to Santubong village and Damai. Overall, apart from the lack of bidet in our room toilet, I would highly recommend Cove55 for couples searching for intimate time together in a beautiful natural setting.

Thank you for the review of your anniversary stay here at Cove 55. We are thrilled that you enjoyed every aspect of your stay, apart from the missing bidet. This has been well noted, and we shall look into it as part of future room upgrades. Indeed, the 'secret' at Cove 55 -as you have discovered- is enjoying doing 'nothing' in the ambiance of the resort to unwind and reset, and we are glad you could do just that. Thank you as well for your kind mention of our team. Nothing is more motivating and encouraging than the positive feedback from our guests. Looking forward to welcoming you back to Cove 55 in the future. With kind regards, Christoph

After a friend's recommendation we booked 2 nights at Cove 55. First of all, a huge thanks to Rowena who took really good care of us. We decided not to rent a car upon arriving at the airport. I'm still not sure if that was a good idea or not but for this stay it was perfect relying on a Grab driver to take us. When we arrived, the room was not ready (we were early). Sarawak Ctural Village was only 10 minutes away and the hotel provided a free drop off and pick up service (subject to availability). When we returned we were given an upgrade. To a cabin by the pool/sea. The cabin was like my dream home. Massively high ceiling, 3 distinct areas. As you walk in, there is a living area with sliding doors to a porch. 2nd room is the bedroom with walking wardrobe behind bedhead. Spacious space that also had another sliding doors to a porch area. 3rd is the bathroom. One of the biggest bathrooms we've seen in a hotel that includes a bathtub facing the porch. The food was divine. We were slightly curious (read worried) if the food offered were good or varied enough for us to keep us fed for 3 days. I even checked out Grab food while we were siting for our first meal. Let's just say we never considered ordering online. If you're in need of a suggestion, get 'Black mussells' as entre. I was slightly sorry I had to share with my husband. We were fed well. A huge kudos to the chefs and the restaurant staff! One other cool thing about this place is the pool. It stands a top of the sea and you can use it any time of the day or night. It's open 24/7! It's lit enough but dark enough for a cooling swim. Loved it. There are plenty of lounge chairs and cabanas to enjoy the view if you came during the day. We will be back. It was really lovely.

Thank you for your Fabtastic review regarding you Fabulous stay at Cove 55! I will pass your kind praise on to Rowena who really does give her all to ensure our guests expectations are exceeded. So happy that you loved the food and found plenty of diversity to last your three nights with us. I will equally pass on your comments to the Chef and his team! Awesome that you took advantage of the "evening swims" under the stars in our 30-meter salt water infinity pool. We look forward to welcoming you back again! In the Spirit of Hospitality, James

Very beautiful resort with clean & comfortable rooms. The balcony has sofa & chairs for people to chill & enjoy the sea view. The white & blue theme reminded me of the Greek island of Santorini. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The swimming pool is open 24 hours & we enjoyed our night swim having the whole pool to ourselves. We also loved the gymn. It is very cool in the evening with the sea breeze. There are only 28 rooms in the resort. Even though it was fully booked, we still felt the sense of exclusivity with not many people around. This place is much better than the Damai Beach Resort nearby that is very run down and too crowded. Will definitely come back here.
