Only a 20 minute drive from the airport, and a transfer service available for 12 ringgit each way, make sure you use this service, I got a grab to the hotel, which cost me 45 ringgit which I felt was overpriced.
There’s not a lot around this area a few local restaurants and a KFC. The hotel says no outside food and that is because everything there is overpriced, for example a bottle of water that costs 1.5 ringgit in seven eleven the hotel wanted 8 ringgit, the food prices are just as bad. You do however get a couple of bottles of water with the room.
Checking in was fine, room is okay, quite dated but did have a new TV, however the reception was so poor they may as well have put a radio in the room, beds are comfortable, sheets were clean and good quality. Great shower, really powerful and just the right temperature.
Got woken up at midnight by reception wanting to know what I wanted to do about the connecting door tomorrow, didn’t make much sense to me but woke me up.
The swimming pool on floor 12 was fine. At first I thought the water was dirty but I think it’s the unfortunate colour of the tiles as it was fine. However I got up at 7am to have an early morning swim as I was traveling all day and it was locked, but the sign said it opened at 7am, I went back at 7.30 and it was still locked so didn’t get a morning swim which was disappointing.
Breakfast £8.50 which I felt was a bit steep considering the room only cost £20
If you just need a cheep hotel to crash in waiting for a plane, this place is cheep and fine.....don’t expect many frills though.
Hotel was easy to reach by taxi from KLIA.
All the staff were very helpful. The rooms were comfortable and very clean. The roof top pool was a bonus due to the heat, but the gym facilities are non-existant.
The restaurant facilities are good and quite reasonable. Breakfast was included in the price of a room and it was very good;there was always something to tempt whether it was Malay cuisine or something more European.
The hotel use a local taxi service to take clients to the circuit at Sepang. It's about a 15 minute journey and they charge 50 MYR return per person.
If you are going to any motor-racing event,I would recommend this hotel especially if like me your budget means the 5* hotels at the airport are out of reach!
Since i came here by choice I have to say that this hotel did not fault me once during my stay of 5 nights.
staff were very polite and helpful breakfast was plentiful and good for the price and the hotel was clean and OK.Yes it does not have the amenities you expect in 5 star, yes it does not have the fresh looks but hey...what do you expect for the price paid?
I was staying during the F1 Grand Prix and they were full to the maximum capacity and they managed to cope well including the night we were left without electricity and they had many F1 personnel and journalists who were busy working on their computers.
In all , I would not hesitate coming back, although maybe is a little to far from the track for my liking and as usual the taxi operators during this period ( as everywhere else around the world) they over charge for their services. But as i mentioned it is used by many people working in the circus of F1 so it is not too far.
One tip for the hotel manager i would give is to place the clean towels inside the bathroom and not on the beds as everytime I was taking a shower i would find myself to walk across the bedroom soaking wet because i kept forgetting the towels were left out.
The hotel's largely relies on the business from the surrounding industrial community from Sepang and stretching all the way to Dengkil. Another portion of their business comes from airport transit customers but mostly on an ad hoc basis.
Empress is not a luxury hotel and if transit customers are looking for a 5 star accomodation with service excellence, then fork out the premium and stay at the one of the hotels nearby KLIA (ie. Sama-Sama Hotel).
We opted to stay at Empress Hotel while on our gastronomic road trip to Dengkil (14km from the hotel). The hotel is the only high rise (12 storey) in the area and from the aged facade, it has been around for decades. The lobby was pretty spacious and airy and service from the front desk was friendly and quick, probably because we were the only ones checking in at that time.
There was no porter service but neither did we require any. We got a room on the 6th floor which was a Superior with twin single bedding. The room although aged, was pretty well maintained with all the electrical appliances and lighting functioning in good order. The toilet was clean and functional with a shower curtain separating the wash basin from the shower area. Water pressure was pretty good too. Creature comfort was basic but adequate - refrigerator, coffee/tea, 24hrs room service, hair dryer, satellite channels (limited), complimentary wifi, ceiling ventilator in the shower area, body lotion, shower gel, shampoo & laundry service.
What we least liked about our room was the centralized air conditioning system which meant we had no control over the temperature or blower speed. The CRT TV should have been replaced with an LCD version at the very least. Also the windows provided the least amount of sound proofing which we only realized later that evening when we heard the traffic noise from the roads below. Wifi signal was very weak as our room was on the far end of the block and away from the wifi router. And finally, we would have preferred black out curtains to prevent light intrusion into our room early in the morning.
The hotel's top floors consists of banquet and conference facilites, with its largest occupying almost 600sqm and offering a maximum seating capacity of 800 pax (theatre setup). Other amenities includes the Angsana coffee house, a roof top swimming pool, fitness centre, open air and basement parking.
In terms of location, we had no complains as we had everything within walking distance away - 2 chinese restaurants, a few local malay eateries, Ramly burger shop, KFC, a telecommunication shop, a few small convenience marts, 99 Speedmart & 7-Eleven.
We had a comfortable (albeit noisy) stay and we faced no issue in terms of service. Everyone we met was friendly and smiley, from the front desk or house keeping to the security guards. Just some minor tweaking on those issues we highlighted and this hotel can easily earn a 5 star rating from us for price vs value.
So depending on what type of traveller you are (airport transit, corporate or local traveller), this hotel should not disappoint if you manage your expectations realistically. Set high expectations while paying a budget cost will do you no favour.
TIPS: For a more comfortable and quiet stay, request for a room on the higher floors. For those travelling for business or just plain internet junkies, be sure to request for a room closest to the wifi router for a better signal. For those travelling by their own transport, Yew Hin Restaurant or Sinki Restaurant in Dengkil is just 14km away and Paya Indah Wetlands just over 20km away.
First good things about Empress , The hotel is closer to the KL International Airport. I would take 15-20 minutes by car and 40 kms to KL City center.
They offer complimentary breakfast. Though there was lot of variety. The rooms were not too impressive but the staff members were really supportive.
They offer travel desk for city tour. I paid 250 MYR for city tour. Overall it is good but not impressive.
The hotel itself was nothing special, though the room was clean. It was impossible to change the temperature of the air-conditioning which was put at a freezing level.
In case you end up in this hotel and need to go to the airport, just take one of the frequent public buses on the main road around 50 m from the hotel. Only 1 RM per person.
Booking some weeks previous to the overnight stay required near KLIA, I selected the package that included dinner and breakfast along with an airport pick up. I specified a non-smoking room for my young family and provided details of the airport pick up time and flight number.
As you can probably tell by the tone of this review, there was no pick up for us at the airport, so we had to take a taxi to the hotel. On arrival at reception, they said that I should have phoned again for to confirm the pick up. But no apology and they had not told me that on previous contact.
Next, they said my package did not include any meals. Despite my printed confirmation, they finally begrudgingly gave me two vouchers for each meal (not four as specified).
We then made our way to our room to be greeted with an overwhelming stench of stale tobacco smoke. My young son almost vomited the smell was so bad. Reception staff told me when I complained that there were no non-smoking rooms in the hotel!! But they had not told me that when I made the request on booking!
In the meantime, it became apparent that there was a major wiring problem with the room. Every 30 seconds the lights and power would turn off for several seconds and then noisly clunk back on again. This was the final straw after no pick up, no specified meals, a revolting smokey room and now the power - all in less than 30 minutes at this hotel!
I went back to reception and told the staff that we would not be staying and I would not be paying for the room. Sheepishly, they agreed that I had a point and on inspecting that there was no wear or use of the room, they said that was OK and no charge would be made. The (almost) final problem was when the transport attendant got us a taxi at an inflated price (wanting payment in advance for the driver) and then pocketing part of the cash for himself when it arrived!
The taxi took us to the magnificent Shangri-La Putrajaya - not much further from the airport and not much more expensive. With ten minutes notice, they had prepared our room and welcomed us warmly when we arrived in a frazzled state.
Three months later, a charge for approx 300RM was made on my credit card from the Empress Hotel. They claim the charge was made at a later date, citing my "no show" some months earlier. They refused to accept my story and so no my bank is following up the matter.
All in all, with hundreds of nights staying in wonderful large and small Asian hotels under my belt, this was undoubtedly the worst experience my family and I have come across.
"Nothing obvious as there is no traffic noise and surprisingly it's not under a flightpath"Read full review
