You should stay here, wear the robe (google on how to wear it), and even try the public bath. It is an wonderfully awkward experience. The 2.5 hour meal was wonderful, the presentation of each one was at times stunning and intimidating but worth it.

In 2013 I wasn't in Kyoto for very long, but this single meal was one of the major highlights of my solo trip to Japan. I had just hiked back down from getting lost in the trails of the Shinto Shrine and accidentally stumbled upon this gem just looking for something to eat. The food was amazing, super fresh, didn't...

Can't recommend this highly enough. The ryokan itself is absolutely beautiful, really traditional Japanese house with separate onsen baths for male and female guests. The service we received was wonderful, the breakfast was the best we had in Japan. We stayed one night which was plenty to get a feel for this traditional experience. The location is fantastic too, right...

I absolutely loved my stay at Yuzuya and it was my favourite accommodation during my month-long travel. The ryokan is very centrally located and within walking distances to key temples, metro station and abundance of buses and taxi stands across the road that can take you to almost anywhere in Tokyo. It is about 10 mins by taxi from Kyoto...

Yuzuya is accessed from a small black gate next to the Yasaka shrine. You step from a busy road into a world of tranquility. The attention to detail is superb, as is the service. Both breakfast and dinner are of a very high standard.

This traditional Ryokan is located next a famous area in Kyoto full with temples. The entrance is slightly hidden and since it does not have signs other than the ones in Japanese, it is very easy to walk passed. It is however located on a very busy street but once you enter the Ryokan, everything becomes very tranquil. The rooms...

I stayed at Yuzuya for 2 nights during mid October. The service and the food were excellent, but my room was extremely noisy. The building itself was very pretty. The reception and the restaurant were nicely decorated and designed with view of garden and waterfall. However, the room was really small and quite standard and did not really have any...

Felt like I had to keep pinching myself that this place was real. The food was truly exceptional (both breakfast and dinner). I can't imagine better service. Rooms are remarkable. The location is in central Gion and a perfect place to have your base in Kyoto. If you want to do Kyoto right, add this traditional high end Ryokan to...

Absolutely money well spent ! I stayed here for two nights with my 14 year old nephew. Outstanding service, beautiful room, fantastic location (literally a minutes walk to main shopping, and hundreds of restaurants). Rooms were spotless. We had the best time - loved coming back from dinner and having our futons ready made up.

If you are in Japan for the first time having a purse with a little extra, - stay a night in that hotel. If not get a lunch there. Taking a bath and enjoy contemplating about how time can stand still like in the Yuzu Ryokan. How food can be prepared and taste like in the Yuzu Ryokan. The atmosphere...

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.

“The rooms at the back of the hotel are quietest, although there's no really noisy space. there's no sign outside - just the menu is posted, which emphasizes yuzu, the Japanese citrus, thus Yuzuya.Try both the cold yuzu juice and the hoot yuzu tea - it's fantastic!”
