One word: amazing. Ideally located, in the heart of Gion. We stayed there for 3 nights, with breakfast and dinner option, totally worth it. It feels very authentic and we left with a magical impression. The rooms are made of tatamis, the beds are made at night after dinner and undone in the morning before breakfast. The service is exceptional:...

I've been in that hotel together with family at the end of Japan trip. After visiting many places in a week period, we really feel the real Japan experience in there. Not only the room but also dinner, breakfast, traditional clothing are great experience. Strongly advice everyone. But consider that this is not a value for money place

We spent a week in Tokyo and Kyoto, staying at some pretty nice Airbnbs... but wow, nothing compared to Gion Hatanaka. If you've never been to a Ryokan, hang on! It's an incredible experience. We were initially nervous about it being too formal and strict, but the woman that took care of us (served our meals in our room, made...

This review is based on a one night stay including in-room kaiseki dinner and breakfast in late March. Pros: - Great location in walking distance to many attractions. - English is widely spoken. - Friendly and attentive room attendant. - Extensive and delicious Japanese breakfast. - Upgrade to a slightly larger room (designed to accommodate 4 instead of 3 persons)....

It's hard to find anything bad about Gion Hatanaka, everything was splendid, the service, the place, the hot baths, the food, the location, etc. If we had one or two areas for improvement, I would say make the water and soft drinks in the rooms complementary (after all, one is paying top money for this place and it would be...

You should think twice if you will really appreciate this type of experience before paying over 700-800 dollars a night for this. Our stay here was definitely memorable, but unfortunately it is because it felt kind of ridiculous for what it cost. The staff was very nice and they tried very hard. The food was nice and the presentation was...

We had an absolutely wonderful two nights at Gion Hatanaka. The service was fantastic throughout our stay, and the ryokan itself is beautiful - a little set back from the road, it's utterly immaculate from the little rock garden next to the reception to the pristine tatami in our room! The ryokan is tucked away right in the heart of...

This ryokan offers true, warm Japanese hospitality and a chance to live their culture which evolved through more than a thousand years. An experience that will linger with you and will definitely put a smile on satisfied heart whenever, wherever you might be. Truly a great experience even for a Asian, even more so if you are a Westerner :-)

If you are looking for a Ryokan experience, then this is the place to go. However I am not sure why it is categorised as a luxurious ryokan as it is largely basic but cosy. We stayed 2 nights with a 22 months old in tow, and that's more than enough for experience. The public onsen (hot spring bath) is...

I stayed at this Ryokan with my husband last June and I loved it and would definitely recommend. The ryokan is impeccable, beautiful and really comfortable. There were gorgeous trees outside our window. We had traditional breakfast in our room and it was exquisite. The Ryokan has a great location in Gion district
