Most of us may be satisfied in our travels to just sightsee, but if you are interested in adding a dimension, try the ryokan experience in this traditional former capital of Japan. This 7-story inn was built 100 years ago but was retrofitted with modern amenities, including a 6-man elevator, modern toilets and baths in the 26 units. Our unit...

We had no problem in finding this place and its right on the main street and so many shops and restaurants around. The room is big for the both of us and the dinner and breakfast was such a wonderful experience. The ladies that served us and tidy up our room was the sweetest lady and very happy! She served...

I have stayed at Kamogawakan for two times, First time with my boyfriend, second time with our 2 months old baby. Location is prefect, just a few minutes walk to the shopping district, 2 minutes walk to train, tunes of very good restaurants around, Starbucks just 1 minutes walk around the corner. Staffs are very nice and helpful, front desk...

This ryokan is located in one of the best places to stay in kyoto! Main bus lines and great shopping are really close to the hotel, and also you are just a few steps from main streets of famous foods and izakayas! The room was really big for 4 people and the staff explained us how it works! From the...

I loved this place! The room was a lot bigger than I thought. Walk in, little hallway with toilette through one door and bath through another. Enter into main room with table set up. Our host was the sweetest lady and super cool, very happy! She served us tea and a cookie to welcome us. There's another little room past...

The Ryokan is very well located, near to the shopping and entertainment district of Kyoto and also within walking distance of a lot of the temples and shrines in Higashiyama. Given its location the Ryokan is therefore pretty expensive by Japanese standards. We stayed in a couple of other Ryokans during our trip to Japan and I would certainly say...

Good accomodation. Traditional style within a hotel. Japanese breakfast was lovely. Great that you could open windows to get fresh air. The quality of the mats were excellent and the bedding warm for the cold nights. Close to Sanjo station. Not far from subway. Easy to get around. Close to excellent restaurants and convenience stores. One negative was the proximity...

The hotel is close to a lot of restaurants and a train station. Highly recommended if you want to stay in a Japanese style ryokan and be close to the city where you can visit all the attractions of Kyoto. The Hotel is walking distance to the Gion District (Where you can see Geisha's). The staff Spoke good English, and...

Staff were very welcoming and spoke good English. Breakfast included was delicious and served in dining room with separate cubicles so good for travelling alone. Also private enough to wear Japanese style dressing gown and slippers. Near Gion area river shops and temples close to Sanjo subway. Had a view of the river from my room. Also own little indoor...

Strange that Tripadvisor ratings go from 3=average to 4=very good. I would rate this hotel as quite good. It is a traditional Japanese hotel so do not expect English TV or western things. Breakfast was nice and well-served. Room was quiet and clean. There is a strict adherence to check-in and check-out times in Japan. They called our room at...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
