We just got back from a wonderful 10-day trip to Japan. We experienced three different hotels in 3 cities (Kyoto, Tokyo and Atami) and we had a great experience at Kanamean in Kyoto. Welcoming staff, clean rooms and perfect location. Strongly recommend this hotel if you like to experience a traditional Japanese style hotel.

We stayed in the YOKOBUE deluxe suite which was a perfect size with its zen rock garden, and a modern take on traditional Japanese interiors. The couple who owns the Ryokan are huge foodies and architectural lovers with bookshelves overflowing of amazing books from their trips. Their english is very good and are well travelled themselves. They were incredibly accommodating...

We are from California. My wife and researched ryokans in Kyoto for our trip and found this amazing gem owned and ran by Mr. Nishida and his wife Kyoko. The three criteria we looked for was location, true ryokan experience, and cost; and all were met or exceed here. This ryokan is a direct 3 min walk to the Nikishi...

Suitable if you are into more luxury accommodations, love wining and dining and willing to pay. The Kaiseki dinner is worthy of a Michelin star IMHO. Arty deco showing the owners are well travelled. Andre of restaurant Andre in Singapore has stayed here. The owners take a lot of pride in formulating their menu to match fine dining, with a...

I stayed here for 3 nights, & wish I could have stayed longer. I traveled as a single woman, which I share because some luxury ryokans (based on 2+/room occupancy) will not accept singles. My upstairs suite was lovely, spacious, &. quiet. My futon was exceptionally comfortable, & it was placed atop an additional cushion. My private bath area had...

From arrival till departure this was one of the greatest experiences. The ryokan is well situated, and be sure to book a dinner as the food is another experience. The attention to detail was incredible! Nothing was too much for the staff. Highly recommended!

We stayed for one night at this amazing Ryokan and had the set dinner as well. Everything of the experience is absolutely perfect -- the rooms and bath were quiet and beautifully designed, the service impeccable and the meals (dinner and breakfast) were amazing as well. Very friendly service with excellent suggestions for walking tours in the neighborhood. Highly recommend...

I have stayed in many ryokan throughout Japan. This is my first in Kyoto. I booked last minute and didn't have much choice. I understand that ryokan are quite expensive. This is a fantastic ryokan for the money: 1. Fantastic location in the heart of Kyoto, near shopping and sightseeing. 2. On a pretty little street. 3. Entrance is beautiful....

A wonderful ryokan in the center of Kyoto. Worth the stay. Everything detail is carefully thought of. Luxurious Japanese authentic experience. The rooms, the bath... Would go back anytime to repeat the experience. That is what you have in mind when thinking of Japan.

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighbourhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.

“If you find the rooms too expensive, you can always try to haggle a good rate and deal with the owners if you plan on trying their kaiseki or breakfast anyway. The Aoi suite was nice but not amazing considering price and value ratio.”
