My wife and I, recently had occasion to spend five days, of our ten-day visit to Japan, in Kyoto. My nephew, a long term resident of Tokyo, booked us into the Tougetsu Hotel, a traditional ryokan in the heart of Kyoto, and we could not have been more pleased. We found this 100 year old plus property, iconic and alluring....

This Ryokan, run by two old but fit Japanese sisters, is for you if you want to experience a traditional Ryokan. It's a very old building made out of mostly wood, everything squeaks and you hear every voice and footstep in the building. The sisters are extremely service oriented. They will make sure you have everything you need. They talk...

This ryokan is really old fashion. The owners are even older. The rooms are ok and the location is fine. Make sure you rent a bike in Kyoto. It is hard to find and the prices are quit high (also at that time the yen/euro rate was horrible). The place is ok, but you can probably find better.

Overall I was a little disappointed with this ryokan. It's fairly conveniently located near the Imperial Palace and walking distance to the subway although there's no english sign so it's a little hard to find in the back streets of Kyoto late in the evening. The owner was pleasant and speaks a little english. The room was fairly large with...
