...However, we didn't find these to be big issues. Especially since we were there in June (2015) so the semi-outdoors washrooms weren't a problem. We had no issues with the water. We did get to know the other guest pretty well too. The location is indeed not as convenient as people here make it seem. 15 min walking to the...

Yes it is not close to the centre of kyoto and yes the neighbourhood is a bit dead after 9pm. But you can pinpoint that on a map before booking and its an easy transport by subway and bus. I guess it depenss what your looking for. I absolutely loved staying at Bon, the owner and his wife are adorable...

There seems to be a consensus on how wonderful Guest House Bon is and yes there are some very charming things about this hostel but I think I need to point out that the reviews here seem a bit over enthusiastic, probably due to the fact that the owner is so nice. I also found the owner charming and helpful...

We were there in the winter 2013, it is rather small but clean and really homely, the neighborhood is very quiet too, short walking distance to bus routes to take you to all attractions in Kyoto. Taniguchi-san is really nice, advised us on what to see and how to get there and wouldn't let us walk to the subway the...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here at guesthouse bon, our host was extremely accommodating and friendly, he couldn't do enough for us even driving us to the tube station on the last day. When we arrived he gave us explanations of the transport system and sold us bus passes so we were able to get to all the sights of...

The owner of the guesthouse is very informative. When we had a question he would listen carefully and go through the steps with us step by step. We also went for a Maiko-transformation photo shoot and he phoned the place for us so we could change our time. The map he sends you or that is available online is good...

Iresidentialfirst solo travel and this place was recommended to me. I booked it through Hostelworld and inadvertently booked for a day later than I actually arrived. Instead of turning me away because they were full, they made up a room in their own house for my first night. The rooms are very comfortable, the kitchen well equipped, there are bikes...

What more can I say that hasn't been said here? This place is just wonderful. I have traveled quite a bit in several different countries and it is no exaggeration when I say that this is the most pleasant place where I have ever stayed. The words "home away from home" are often used by many hotels and guesthouses, but...

We stayed here for 3 nights and found the traditional setting wonderful. The guest house is located ~1.2 km from Kitaoji station which can be walked fairly easily, although a bus would be ideal if you are carrying a lot of luggage. There is also a main road nearby (2 min walk from the guest house) and a number of...

This fabulous little guesthouse was a dream to return to after hectic sightseeing days among the crowds. Kazo the owner is a lovely man - so very welcoming and informative and nothing was too much trouble. Very helpful too with supplying bus routes and ideas for places to visit. He is a real mine of information and I loved the...

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
