This guesthouse is located in Gion. It's central and Gion is wonderful to walk around after dark. The staff here is very nice, and they got a pair of adorable daughters that might be there during the afternoon. The place is well cleaned everyday and the facilities are good.

IchiEnSou was such a beautiful place to stay, highly recommended. Located in the geisha neighborhood of Gion, it's situated down a little side street with shops, cafes, restaurants abound, within walking distance to almost everything Kyoto has to offer. The owners were kind and friendly, the building itself is an old refurbished Japanese townhouse which really adds to the old...

I lived in Kyoto for 2 months but I still found it hard to look for the place for the first time. The sign in front is really small I missed it despite the taxi dropping me right there. So this may be my fault for not looking closer. Once I checked in everything else went smooth. Kyoto is notoriously...

I stayed in the 7-person dorm for a few nights on a solo trip to Kyoto and couldn't recommend it more! The hostel is minutes away from Gion-shijo station (Keihan) and Kawaramachi station (Hankyu), right in Gion disrict and walking distance to several temples, restaurants, and Nishiki Market. Finding IchiEnSou the first time might be tricky, as the doorway and...

IchiEnsou was wonderful! It's a beautiful old house in a perfect location, right next to a train station and very close to many temples and the geiko area/Gion Corner. It is also conveniently close to the Nishiki Food Market and all the little restaurants and bars around that area. The owners are very nice and speak great English. They have...

The location is Ichi En Sou is perfect. Literally right around the corner from an underground train station, convenience store, and only two streets away from the prime geiko spotting streets of Gion. Yoshi (or Yashi?), the owner is always very pleasant, and speaks fluent English. If you're lucky, he might also take a group on a night walk of...

I was in Ichi en Sou a couple of years ago. It was a very nice experience. The owners were very friendly and the hostel was located at central location in Kyoto. However, I didn't like the fact that there is a mixed dorm and a dorm only for women. No dorm exclusively for men. As a male, I felt...

Near the very beautiful neighbourhood of Gion whose cherry blossoms were just starting to bloom when I was there. Owners very warm and accommodating, and there was a great vibe in the common areas from both them and the other guests. Has kitchen for light cooking or warming your bentos. Wooden floors and comfortable beds - thoughtfully furnished.

If location is most important for you, this is the place to stay. Two tiny showers and two toilets are a bit inconvenient . But the most disappointing for me was that the owner of this guesthouse was the most unfriendliest Japanese I met in Kyoto. I felt uncomfortable with the owners during my stay for 5days and here's why.....

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
