My family stayed here for 3 days in July, 2013. We had two rooms - one Japanese style, one western style. Rooms were lovely and well appointed. They provide yukata (pajama robes) with each room. Futons in the Japanese room were clean and comfortable. Each room has a separate bathroom (no shared bath, if you are looking for that). Showers...

I actually stayed here last year during hanami and I plan to stay there again when I go back later this year. *the 'when did you travel' tab didn't have an option for April 2012, FYI* It is a charming place. The lobby area (if you could call it that) is warm and inviting, and they sometimes have Japanese art...

The place is very much like what you see in the pictures. Except that the gardens and common areas are a lot smaller that what they appear. The staff is truly wonderful as pointed out by many others here. The Ryokan is a 15 min walk from the station and about a 3 min walk from teh bus stand so...

We stayed in one of the Japanese style rooms and loved it. They were very welcoming to us, gave us a lovely tour when we arrived of the entry area. We were staying on the top floor and didn't have the problem other people reported of being able to hear nearby rooms, although we could hear a little noise in...

Facilities in toilet can be better. I can barely turn around in the toilet. Except it, everything is good. The living room is clean and tidy. You can hear people talking in next room. Elevator is available.

Close to Kyoto station, very traditional Japanese style rooms with valuable price, but recommend 1room for each person, might be too small for 2 ppl to stay-in. Staff can speak excellent English, and the Ryokan is close to bicycle rental spot which is very convenience.

This is an excellent ryokan. The location is on a quiet back street about a 10 minute walk from Kyoto station. The property is quiet and extremely clean. The rooms are very well appointed and nicely functional. The most appealing thing about this ryokan is the staff. You would be hard pressed to find a kinder, more helpful staff anywhere....

The location of this hotel, which is actually one and the same building with Ryokan Sakura, is wonderful for a first-timer to Kyoto. Situated in a very old neighborhood across from the beautiful Nishi Honganji temple, it is perfect for evening strolls and daytime shopping in the old and rare Buddhist shops surrounding it. It's a short walk or a...

We spent 3 nights in early November. We walked from the train station and had a hard time finding it from the website; I expect they've fixed that! The rooms were very clean and the staff super friendly and helpful (they even mailed something we had left behind to an acquaintance in Tokyo!) The location was great for walking: getting...

Kaede Ryokan and Sakura Ryokan are one and the same property. A good 10 minute walk from Kyoto station the property was a little difficult to find at first..but it's one street back from the main street on which Nishi Honganji can be found. The room was spotlessly clean.A lot of thought has gone into making this place feel traditionally...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
