checked in and walked several hundred metres through back streets to a cold tiny upstairs room booked via Qantas website. Room for 3 adults and one child 11. But on arrival found no bedding etc for my daughter. They said a child is under 6 and sleeps in same bed as the adult. So they moved us downstairs and we...

Thank you for your stay and feedback. Regarding the lock-out, we deeply apologize for this. After our research, it seems that one staff forgot to take out the room key from the room after moving your stuff from the original room to the new room. We will put our best effort on our education system not to occur these problems...

The staff in charge of the front desk were extremely friendly and speaks good English. I think the owner owns a bunch of different ryokans within the block, and the front desk is in a different property. I walked from Kyoto Station (took about 15 mins), found the place, only had to go back a few blocks again to find...

We appreciate your stay and evaluation. First of all, we apologize for the inconveniences you mentioned, isolated from the main front desk. Even so, we suppose that you gave us a good comment about your visit. It is very difficult that all bus lines are located in convenience distance as we have loads of bus lines in Kyoto. We personally...

Friendly staff, small but clean rooms. You have to get use sleeping on futon mattresses on the floor, but its the "real" japanese experience. Try to get a room that is NOT right next to the entrance doors as the noise from the street and the door opening is a bit loud in the evening/ at night. no cars on...

The old-style ryokan: traditional wooden house with small rooms having only tatami mat on the floor. You may think it's a little bit uncomfortable (no chairs, no bed), but if you're in Japan - sleep like Japanese! Rooms are perfectly clean, bathroom is small (like in almost all Japanese hotels) but nice. Staff is very helpful (and dressed traditionally!). Perfect,...

Great atmosphere tucked away in a small alley. Stayed in a private room with bath. No distractions, just the comfort of traditional Japanese bedding, with modern bath amenities. Good value, friendly staff, and a unique experience. Good craft beer & food parinings available at Bungalow (review on Tripadvisor)

Very helpful staff, clean as can be, easy located in walking distance from the central station. The hotel is a re-innovated old house, with a very traditional feeling to it. Everything is labeled with little hand-written tags, adding to the cuteness of it. Rooms very tiny, traditional, but very lovely. We loved it and next trip to Kyoto, this is...

We need a traditional Japanese feeling place ie futons for sleeping that can fit 10 people. Finding this is a really good deal for us (6k yen per person per night)..esp. since we can cook at home and we are near 7-11 and Gojo Station. Kyoto station is around 4 blocks away which is walkable even with luggage (in fall)....

This is a place with a kind grup of staff members and a genuine japanese atmosphere. The Wi-Fi was great. Our room was small but very cozy. I loved the hand drawned pictures in the information book! ^^ The room had a WC and bathtub+shower, water boiler for tea (a bit slow, though) and yukata. There were space for suitcases...

Although somewhat hard to find with the limited directions we managed to find our first ryokan in this peaceful back street and straight away fell in love with it. Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
