We have never been looked after as well as we were by the lovely staff at Hotel Mume. From the moment we arrived everything was perfect. We were given maps and recommendations of what to see, where to eat, how to get there..... drinks in the salon each evening before venturing out to eat. We stayed in the Wind room...

There are few moments sadder in any trip than checking out of the Hotel Mume. My wife and I have been traveling RTW for 10 months and Hotel Mume has been one of our highlights. Shibata-sama runs a very fine facility with attention to detail and customer service that is extraordinary even on the already high Japanese standards. We stayed...

The WiFi password mumelovesyou sums this hotel up! I have never stayed at an hotel that pays so much care and attention to their guests. All of the staff, led by Hisako, are extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful, taking the time to talk through their guests plans, offer suggestions, print maps, even print off timetables. The restaurant they recommended (Mikaku)...

I booked a room at Hotel Mume based on the stellar reviews of fellow Trip Advisor users. The reviews were dead-on accurate, and our stay in this small but beautiful property was definitely one my wife and I will never forget. There are a total of seven rooms in the hotel. I booked the Moon room, which I hesitated to...

We stayed for 1 week at the end of January in this magnificent boutique hotel. Set in Gion, the old area of Kyoto, in the antique shop area, this is the closest to staying in a Ryokan with all the mod cons that you could want. The rooms are beautiful ( we were lucky enough to be upgraded to the...

Wouldn't consider staying anywhere else in Kyoto. Mume Hotel staff are brilliant, so helpful, so friendly. From the beauty of the hotel itself, carefully crafted by the owner, Hisako, to the considerate, kind, intelligent and lovely staff, this hotel is quality, elegance, and good value. Oh, and their home made plum wine (if available) at happy hour is a must..as...

Hotel Mume made our visit to Kyoto very special. The excellent personalized concierge service provided by Mume enabled us to easily enjoy discovering / exploring the city on our own, without much advance preparation. Based on our interests and capabilities, they recommended places to go, how to get there (including schedules for public transportation and printouts of Google street views...

Mume is just fabulous! My 15-year old daughter and I had spent a couple of days in Kyoto last year and knew that we wanted to return to explore further, which we did last week. As it was just the two of us, Mume seemed to be the ideal hotel, and it most certainly was. The location was perfect --...

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
