Great little hotel about $15 taxi ride from Kyoto station. Hotel was incredibly comfortable and the staff were very helpful when it came to bookings, directions and assisting in any way possible. Free breakfast came with the hotel reservation. A few blocks away from the main street of Gion and walking distance from the chionin temple, Yasaka Shrine and Higashiyama...

This is definitely a benchmark for all hotels, large and small! Selected this hotel because of the reviews and was not disappointed, there is not a negative comment that can be made about Hotel Mume. From our initial enquiry to our eventual stay, Hisako and her staff provided us with an enormous amount of information and assistance and nothing was...

Mume is a great place to stay and justify by itself to include Kyoto in your itinerary. The hotel is comfortable, decorated with taste, and very well located in a nice neighborhood near major places to visit. The service deserves to be highlighted. They find a way to balance to be very professional and very friendly. They have become for...

A second visit to Kyoto provided a second opportunity to stay at Hotel Mume in Gion. The location is perfect and, for Japanese hotels, the space is good. It's quirky; it's stylish and it's great fun. Management and staff will do everything they can to make your visit perfect. They speak excellent English, they provide a delicious breakfast, they will...

If there were "Oscars" for the hotel industry as there are for the film industry then I would nominate Hisako and her team for an Oscar for every possible category!!!! We spent 4 nights at Hotel Mume last week and had the flower room (beautiful room with balcony overlooking the small river behind). This hotel is in a category of...

Hotel Mume is perfectly located in Gion. The staff is incredibly helpful. They had a map printed for everywhere on our agenda. The owner is very sweet. She went to culinary school and so knows food well. She spent 30 minutes with my girlfriend and I helping us find the perfect restaurant.

Absolutely stunning hotel, super rooms, nice breakfast, best service we have ever experienced, they even come out to wave you off in the taxi. We stayed 4 nights in butterfly room 3. Sad to leave Kyoto and Mume. Book well in advance, only 7 rooms!

I think that everything is already said regarding this fantastic hotel, but I couldn't help writing as well. The rooms are wonderful (we had the Butterfly one), the breakfast is very tasty, it is perfectly located…but what makes this hotel outstanding is the service. The staff makes everything to make you feel perfectly, helping you with everything you need (and...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
