Most economic hotels in Japan have limited space and amenities in every room. But Citadines Karasuma-Gojo Kyoto is exceptionally chic, roomy, clean and generous. Our room has a kitchenette, a small living room area separated from the sleeping area. We had breakfast inside the hotel and it was freshly made and served by a staff. Shopping areas, restaurants and public...

This has to be my favorite hotel from my last trip to Japan. The rooms were nice, fully equipped with a kitchenette and beds were comfortable. Location is perfect, right along a bus and train route and there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance. What sets this hotel apart is its wonderful staff. I have never felt so welcome...

This being my sixth trip up to Japan we are used to small Japanese rooms. The citadine was not the same. The room has kitchen facilities which we had never had before - so handy should you choose to use them - there is a supermarket 250m down the road (Japanese supermarkets are a must visit). We had a twin...

granted, accommodation that is close to attractions in a city where land prices come at a premium is going to cost a lot more than outlying options. thankfully, the Citadines property in Kyoto is priced reasonably (going by Kyoto standards of course) and is just a one-stop subway ride to the main shopping street or a gentle 15 minute walk...

Coming from the mini hotel rooms in Tokyo this place is a palace!. Super clean rooms, small but tasty breakfast, good internet connection. Everything is far away in Kyoto but this hotel is close to the central station and you can hop on a bus a few steps from the main entrance and get to almost anywhere. I walked to...

Before booking this hotel I read all the TA reviews, including all the negative ones, and decided to book here for a week in May 2015. I have since returned home and re-read all the negative reviews and you can, by and large, dismiss them. This is a good choice of hotel in Kyoto. The rooms are not huge, but...

This is our 2nd stay here. It is close to Kyoto Station, you can either walk or take the subway. We had a studio apartment. It was great to have a couch to sit on of an evening and cooking facilities (although we only used them for breakfast). The bed was comfortable, the unit immaculately clean. The entrance is lovely....

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
