A Japanese friend recommended this place, which was good value with breakfast and all. The staff were very helpful in general, in a very particular Japanese way, careful and by the rules, strictly following hours, but very kind. No complaints about the strand. There's definitely a historic charm about the place and it was interesting to partake it, but I...

I brought my parents to stay for 4 nights but tried different rooms. I personally really like it. But for my dad who has knee problem, it's better to stay at ground floor rooms. The wifi on the second floor was not strong but it doesn't matter too much, because you can easily to buy SIM card in Japan. The...

Very traditional ryokan, the staff said this house probably 100 over years old. The only way to access this ryokan is by bus. Simply take bus 206 from anywhere. However you require to walk about 10mins from bus stop to the house. It is very clean and has everything you need. I was struck down by fever on my 3rd...

We stayed here 4 nights in January and had a wonderful time. The ryokan is tucked away in a neighborhood a little far from the hustle and bustle of downtown Kyoto (about a 45 minute bus ride or a 20 minute cab). But surrounding area is very picturesque and noted a number of sites within walking distance (Golden Temple, Funaoka...

If you would like to experience traditional machiya(町家) this is the place you should visit. The nishijin 西陣 area is exactly what I think the taste of kyoto. kingyoya staff are so welcoming and friendly, thank you Yumiko,Yuki and Jumbo. The music they played perfectly matches the atmosphere and the architect. I will definitely come again.

Location was hard to find, I got lost trying to find the guesthouse, passages in Japan looked alike especially when it was already dark. However the place had an excellent traditional japanese atmosphere. The bed was super comfy. It was located not far from a 24h convenience store. Personnel were kind and helpful

We fell in love with this ryokan at first sight. It is very tastefully decorated and has a homely atmosphere. The house itself is very traditional (this means thin walls, but earplugs are provided free of charge). There is a lovely zen garden where you can spend some relaxing moments while surfing the internet on the computer provided outside. Barley...

Staying in Nishijin District

Neighbourhood Profile
Nishijin District
A district with a long textile heritage, ancient Kyoto is still alive in the Nishijin District. Studded with its weaving factories, tea houses, and onsen, the neighborhood is charming and peaceful with a self-possessed air. Less traveled than other parts of the city, it is a district where you can take it at your own pace. Visitors can explore the many weaving and cloth houses, the free kimono shows, and the many shops selling traditional clothing and goods. Showcasing architecture with sloping roofs and wooden reliefs dating to decades past, the streets in the Nishijin District transport you back in time, making them a joy to wander.

“We managed to fit our babies Phil and Ted sleep tent along with two futons into the extra room of the triple and our friend stayed in the main space. It was a squeeze, but it worked. It's nice to open windows at night, but watch out... there can be mosquitos!”

“You can reserve up to 4 months before your stay, so be sure to book early as the 3 private rooms are popular. If you will arrive late in the evening, be sure to notify the guesthouse so the staff can wait for you at the front desk (the front desk usually closes at 9pm). The triple room is very big and if I would definitely reserve this room if it is available. Don't forget to order daily breakfast at the time of reservation because it is well worth the extra cost (it will cost you more to eat the same kind of the breakfast in a Kyoto restaurant).”
