This hostel is a good value for money stay with 5 star hostel staff treatment and service. The hostel staff really went out of their way to assist us with our travel plans and requests. It was an unique, one of a kind experience staying in a 200 year old beautiful traditional "Machiya" building. It had a library with interesting...

Staying at Hostel Haruya in Kyoto was a wonderfully pleasant experience. The room was small, but clean and well kept, and the location was very good. The receptionist took her time to make us feel welcome and to inform us of all different types of amenities and activities. I strongly recommend. Truly value for money too.

Excellent stay in this Hostel. Actually is a family business. The host was really friendly & helpful.... The room was traditional & nice. We really enjoy the stay here. Beside that it also located in a very strategic location whereby Gion area is just within walking distance.!!!

This ryokan was very cozy and good value for money. It was in a good location the walk down to gion, yasaka shine, kyomizudera and then into the centre. The lady at the desk was very friendly and have lots of good advice on what was in the area and where to go, not just things to see and do...

This hostel offers you with japanese traditional house concept. Compared to the inn with same idea, hostel haruya is cheaper. The buiding is old, so I had to watch my step everytime I walked on 2nd floor. I stayed in female dorm that is cramped, yet the bed was wide enough. My room, bathroom, and every room are clean. There...

We booked a room for our family. The whole environment is cozy and quite comfy. It is an interesting experience to stay one night at this traditional Japanese house. And even the books they provide are decent.

We planned a lot of places to visit in Kyoto, but we didn't know how to visit each one. The staff was a lot of help. They considered all the places we wanted to visit and helped us to plan everything, including bus routes and how long it would take us to enjoy each site. The room itself is small...

☆ Beautiful buildings! It was a pleasure to look at them let alone live in them! ☆The 6 people female dorm room had comfortable beds with curtains and lights on each bed so you could easily stay up late w/o disturbing other people. ☆We were each given (it was on the bed) a hanten (a fluffy, warm coat thingy) witch...

Great place and value who wants to try the traditional Japanese experience. The space is small but it accommodates our needs of basic rest and relax. We are a group of 5 and we booked 2 rooms (1 for 2 people and 1 for 3 people). Location wise, it's great because it's near Gion (walking distance) and Yasaka shrine. We...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
